Alan Pardew named new Southampton Manager

I have to admit I didnt jump for joy when I heard the news this morning. But looking at his stats, Im warming to the appointment.

Managerial Stats

Total 463

Won 197

Lost 145

Drawn 123

Win % 42.54

Good stats which show he knows what he is doing. We must be patient and let him mould a team though. The current squad needs additions to be competitive. Leroy Lita anyone?

From some of the comments on here I am sure they did not realize what that means. ;)

thing is also...we will remain BOTTOM of the 3rd division for a few weeks at the very least no matter what

still..i cant see ANYONE in league 1 with the pedigree pardew has..

Glad I was wrong when earlier I suggested that he would return to Reading

Much better than I could have hoped for including the overrated Mr Strachan.

Lets give him time and look forward to the future with renewed confidence

What a relief that we have appointed a decent manager! Compared to those Dutch clowns and Adams this is great news- we now have someone to all get behind and give our support to. Up the Saints!

Onwards and upwards now peeps. Be interesting to see who he brings in. One thing I do like about AP is his desire and commitment he shows on the touch line

This is unexpected.

I reckon he is a good choice for getting us back into the CCC and possibly the PL thereafter.

But then ?

Seems like a middle-term appointment. But what the hell, with a couple more years under his belt, even that may click.

We could have ended up with a lot, lot, worse.

We were told there is a five year plan to get to the Prem and AP has a three year contract so there is an to change manager for a 'big prem name' when we get nearer to there. The option to keep AP on, of course, remains if he is keeping up with the expectations of the management (and the fans!). There is a 'break clause' after three years if we need it without incurring massive financial penalties. However, AP knows that if he delivers on the plan then he will have tremendous rewards. This is his big chance just as it is ours.

Anyway, as others have said, this is a good appointment and it shows ambition, not lack of, to get someone of AP's credentials. He obviously has the courage and determination to succeed otherwise he would not even consider taking over what we currently have. He also knows there are tremendous expectations of him from everyone but that has probably just inspired him rather than deterred him.

It is also interesting that the management team said they would time but that they would have someone in place by the end of the week and they do it. These guys mean what they say and do what they mean and that, for me, is refreshing.

This is a very good move, I am beginning to like Fridays again - roll on next week, what will that bring! Oh, and by the way, KK and WGS were never realistic options were they?

Fair play to Alan Pardew, having the guts to take on a team starting on -10 points put his neck on the line etc;.........i know some will say he has been out of work since November 2008, so a job is a job, but i would like to think he is brave enough to test his ability to get us back to the league we would prefer to play in.

Spend Markus's money wisely Alan, and lets give it go!!!

Excellent appointment - as TDD has said, he must be easily the most experienced and successful manager in our division. Let's face it, he's managed successfully at this level, CCC level and Premiership level. Has that lean and hungry look too.

Also indicates just how little leaks out of St Mary's nowadays!

Another wise decision, based on what they no doubt could have done.

No more experiments

TBH at this time in our recovery we needed experience, not potential.

I'm not jumping for joy, still do not think we will walk this league, but this is a good appointment after the nightmares of the Gray's Wigley, JP's and Wotte's.

I think we're becoming a football club again, THAT is worth a satisfied smile this morning.

im not sure if some on here realise we are bottom of the 3rd division

We could appoint 'The Chosen One' and some would complain its not Capello!

I jumped for joy when we got Burley who I loathed with a passion at the end...was not happy when we got Strachan. This time I am waiting and hoping he is as good an appointment as I think it is.

If he gets a good start and gets the -10 wiped out quickly which will be tough as we do not have any players yet the club will be on a roll....the fans are geared up for it.

Can't wait for tomorrow to get back to SMS with Flag and face paints ;-)

We were told by Pinnacle of a five year plan, I didn't notice that from ML.

The more I think about it, the more happy I with this.

Every time I've heard Pardew speak, I've been impressed. Remember when the appy ammers were flying people were raving about him. I'm very very happy

As I said on another thread he rattled Arsene Wenger's cage more than once so he'll definitely do for me !!

Great news its now resolved. I'm happy with this appointment. There were probably 5 or 6 others who I would have preferred the Pardew but a great deal more that I would have hated to see.

Welcome to the club Alan, do us a favour and sign some players though. Thank you!

If the delldays is happy then so am I, would have preferred a Burley return thou

:)

Can't think what would be a worse scenario Tony Adams or the return of George.

I think Pardew becoming our new manager is very indicative of the way our future is mapped out over the next few seasons. We will sign some good honest pros who can graft and we will consolidate slowly. By all intents we should not need too much of ML's cash because as a club standing on its own we have no debt/mortgage to service and all income can therefore be spent on the team.

Can't see us chasing propomtion this year as the -10 points and the disarray of the current squad will take a good 6 months to put right but next season should see us as favourites. After that if we are serious about getting back and staying in the PL then we may well need a bigger cash injection from Mr Liebherr. Let's hope he is in it for the long run and he enjoys his pie and pint tomorrow.

You can be a right idiot sometimes.

Yes we are there, and we may deserve it because of inept management and disinterested players, but we are not a bottom of 3rd Div club.

Same old Alpine, always moaning! sing it with me :D

Must admit i wasnt over excited when i heard the news, but had got caught up in the excitement of possibly Strachan! However, in fact believe its a great appointment. I think we all have a lot of reasons to be pleased and excited. FFS barely 2 weeks ago i thought i would never have a club to support. But one at the bottom of div 3, managed by Pardew, Yes i can live with that.

Welcome Alan.:)
