A positive move at the beginning of the long process of rebuilding our club and our team.

Welcome Alan.

Now let every single Saints fan get behind behind and stay behind Alan and the team without exception and without unrealistic expectation - we are rebuilding, its a tough job and is likely to take some significant time. The rebuild must be done in a sustainable fashion.

Come on you Saints!!!!

A very good appointment I feel. :)

Whatever angle I look at it from, it just feels "right" for us.

That's just it. For so many years now; everything about our beloved Football Club, has just been so very wrong.

It has been so hard for us, having to watch the Club we love being relentlessly mismanaged, and falling apart.

But I'm so glad to be Southampton right now. We've stuck with it through all this sh*te, while the passion and spirit that once epitomised this Club was sucked dry.

Finally, it feels like we've emerged from the storm, the dark clouds that have hung so heavily over our Club for so long, have broken up, and at last, the sun is shining again for us, and our future looks bright. :)

An excellent new owner, who seems a perfect "fit" for us, followed by a manager who also feels like the right man, at the right time.

How great it is, to feel that long forgotten thing called optimism flowing once again. :)

A few excerpts from the article shared by syd_barrett_saint:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2...wsstory.sport1

Alan Smith says that as a Palace player Pardew was 'an honest performer who gave you everything and wouldn't put up with anyone who didn't give you the same'.

Nigel Reo-Coker, West Ham's captain, is, unsurprisingly, impressed with Pardew. 'He runs the shop, but he's made it fun. He's made an atmosphere where youth-team players can mix with first-team players. There are no superstars.

'Now, he is meticulous in everything he does,' Richardson says in analysing why he is such a success as a manager. 'And his man-management skills are second to none. He learnt a lot living in the real world and not just in the footballing wonderland.'

Sounds very promising indeed. :)

A warm welcome to Southampton Football Club to Alan Pardew. I hope we will enjoy much success together.

I must admit I wasn't that happy about it this morning but I'm warming up to the guy the same way I did when WGS arrived, so hopefully good things ahead of us. Will give full support to the guy and will judge once he has built his team this is unlikely to happen this year.

Expectations:

Year 1: to build a team this year in prep for year 2, would be happy with mid table finish if we are playing well after Jan Transfer Window.

Year 2: Would hope that after a proper summer that the team will come out strong and push hard for auto

Year 3: Aim for the playoff's in the Championship.

Damn good appointment for a side bottom of the third division. I am not going to say one negative word against him on here before Christmas, and by then hopefully it won't be necessary as we start looking like consolidating somewhere in mid table after overcoming our -10 start. Will take some time for him to get things sorted, given that so much turd is still hanging around from last season. Go Alan.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just got back after avery hot two weeks in Turkey and nice to read that we have appointed a decent solid manager.

I just hope that the usual suspects give him plenty of time. He has a tough job and he isn't going to turn this club around overnight, but I'd like to see him stay awhile and get the job done.

It was Liebherr selling up to Jackson that hacked me off most TBH

Nooooooooooooooooooooo!

It is actually pretty weird being away from all forms of home and sports news for 2 weeks.

No TV, no newspapers, no internet..it was actually quite nice! Nicer still to come back and find we have a half decent manger in place.

I expect someone will tell me that Gordon Brown has stood down and that Rupert Lowe is standing in until the next Election....

Good to hear you survived the 20 minute walk between ground and station last night. I got halfway up the A303 then delayed (never found out why) so turned round as I had left late anyway and was never going to make it.

Ah, so that explains why I never saw anyone in a sheepskin coat :)

Hindsight is always 20/20.

We're marching up the league!

We're marchin that is right, it aint always gonna be up at times we will falter but ultimately I believe we will gain promotion under AP, I only hope its more than once.

In the interest of fairness it would have been good to be able to quote opinions of WGS's appointment then and now or other appointments for that matter.

I dug this thread up whilst looking for some stats involving the dates of our takeover and AP's starting, as i was going to start a new thread concerning the 2nd half of the season. Then I though it would be just as easy to bump this one so people could look back without having to go searching.

For what it's worth, here's my 5 eggs.

When he was first appointed I didn't really have an opinion. Like many, I hadn't even considered him at all.

He started off in a very definite way, seeming clear as to his objectives, and then started to pull some names out of the hat from all kinds of places in the short time he had before battle commenced. At first it seemed to make little difference, but then it started to click, and then accelerate, producing the kind of form that some expected as a minimum, some hoped for, and some were surprised by.

Well now we are half way through and I will give him 8 out of 10. Some of the tactical decisions have left me with a question mark in a bubble over my head, but I have been impressed with his ability to change things during a game mostly to our advantage.

The second batch of 23 games will give him different problems, starting with the transfer window - to stick or twist. I wish you all the best, Alan, as the next 23 games will tell you, and us, so much about your ability at this point in your career.

I've been to nearly every game this season and feel reborn as a Saints fan. I thank you for your part in that, whatever happens.

Keep the faith

10 games mate...you know it takes time to settle

I agree, hate managers not been given time and hope he does well.

What is worrying is

1) See him as an impact manager

2) A decent performing team have taken a considerable turn for the worse since he came in

he didnt get off to the best of starts here did he, but we look back fondly now. I remember quite a few games in he had a right dig at our forwards in a post match interview, the interviewer asked about the strikers, Strachan said their not strikers because their not striking, if they ever start scoring I'll call them strikers :D

Interesting look back....can't be bothered to re-read the whole thread but I must have done at the time as I was devouring everything that was printed & wearing out the F5 button.

8.5/10 from me - in hindsight I think it was an educated appointment & a statement of intent from the new owners. They realised that they had to do a root & branch restoration job & put in a sustainable structure throughout the whole club.

In appointing Pardew they have set out their stall - he had a proven record of recent success, not flash - just an air of capability & was in touch with who was doing what throughout the leagues. He, in turn, set about sorting the players that were going to fit his game plan from who we had & from those available...I think that in Harding, Hammond, Lambert, Murty & Jaidi he has made excellent choices...the transfer window shut before he (not having had a pre-season to prepare) could see how the new players would blend with what he had - more were obviously needed & he has played the loan market with mixed success I would venture.

Trotman I believe was/is a good player to bring in & his game has improved under the stewardship of the coaching team & playing alongside Jaidi - a long way from the finished article but generally more good than bad. Papa is still an unknown but there's class there & an eye for goal - understandably he has taken/is taking time to adjust but I look forward to his contribution to the second half of the season immensely & I hope he could be the 'x-factor' (how I hate that programme!)that we need to make the difference in making the play-offs. Antonio, in my opinion, hasn't really worked out....if he hadn't scored at Bristol would he still be here? Probably not but he's young, strong & fast & could yet maybe add another dimension to his game.

So now the January window...of course it depends on who is available but he has now had a really long, hard look at what he needs over what he has got & this could be the chance to push on with providing quality throughout the squad. If we were able to field our strongest team every week (unlikely due to age/fitness/number of games etc) we probably have as good a footballing side as any in this league but we need quality replacements to cover for Connolly, for instance, who is sheer quality when fit but can't be relied on every game. Ricky is a god but he is going to go through jaded spells, Murty (when back), Jaidi, Perry are in their thirties so whilst we have reasonable flexibility & some good youngsters coming through we need a bit more depth in quality.

I don't know who I'd like to see come in (well I can dream) but I'm sure that our Pardew, Wilkins & Downes management team have been proactive during the closed-window period & have a wealth of contacts & experience to draw on.

I keep saying it but I am such a happy supporter at the moment....the comedy store down the road provides an ongoing reminder of how it could have turned out...or worse!

Happy New Year

8 or 8.5 out of 10 seems a tad generous when the record shows we've only averaged 1.5 points per game over half a season . Logically as we've only gained half the points available a score of 5 out of 10 would seem apt - but I'll add a point or two to that because AP has had to overcome some (well aired) disadvantages compared to some of our opposition .

Building teams is all about chemistry. SOme should work but don't. Some shouldn't work but do. Sometimes you find the right combination by luck, sometimes by hard work, sometimes not at all. ferguson took a while before he got it right and very few managers hit the magic formula straight away and run with it.

If Pardew had had the whole pre-season to bring in players and work with them I think we would have had a better start - not ideal having your pre-season at the start of the season! Still, without the minus 10 we would be sitting in the play off positions and you can't really ask for more from a new manager.

It took Leeds several seasons to get it together so why do we think we will get it right overnight? We still have a way to go before we can match the Leeds and Norwichs consistantly but I am heartening by the fact that we have won matches when we havn't played particularly well.

If the players that Pardew wants are available and want to join us there is no reason why we can't continure on an upward curve. Finally we seem to have a set up that is focussed, pulling in the same direction and is financially sound. So long as we are patient I am sure that better things will come.

Got to admit I'd probably give Pardew 9 out of 10. Signings have been fantastic and am really impressed with the we play football at times. Taken the first 10 games to get it right but we had an imbalanced squad and no pre-season.

I've been to every game and feel although we could do with one or two more players he has generally a very top side for this division, the only two sides I would say are marginally better than us are Norwich and Leeds.

All his backroom staff are great signings and have been managers in their own rights. Wally Downes (Brentford), Stuart Murdock (Wimbledon before they became MK Dons) and Dean Wilkins (Brighton).

Pardew is steadily going about the job is an impressive manner and I feel if we don't get play offs or promotion this season I think we will challenge the title next season.

Slightly wishful thinking I feel.

Pardew has done OK but nothing exceptional so 7 out of 10.
