Well, he's no Tony Adams, but I'm prepared to give him a go ;) Good appointment, about as good as you could hope for in League One.

Actually, one could HOPE for other, more high profile, managers (as I and many others did), but this is as good as could realistically be expected. Good choice. The future is bright .... it's red and white!

At last a proven manager who knows how to get us out of these poxy Divisions and then get us playing how we used to in the Premier (when we were good, not dire!)

Posted
He'll do for me - especially when compared to Portaloo/Wotte/Gray/Wigley etc.

He's no Strachan but will definitely do for me.

probably more successful and experienced than WGS was when he joined us - and also came from relegated side - who knows!

Tho' not the earth-shattering appointment that got everyone buzzing, for a club starting in the third divison - on minus-10 points this close to the start of the season with half a team - we should be chuffed to get a guy of this calibre.

Finally sorted and NOT Tony Adams ! I am more than happy with someone of his experience.

He has a pretty good record and has experience at this level. Took Reading to the League 2 place offs in 2001 after they had been struggling under Terry Bullivant and then took them into League 1 the following season where they finished in the play offs in their first season.

Despite not being the type of charismatic manager West Ham fans tend to want he still took them to promotion from the CCC as well. He did well in the PL to begin with but one bad run and he was sacked.

When he took over at Charlton they were already in serious decline and he never really got to terms with turning things around though I think many would have found managing Charlton at that point a thankless task as I don't consider them as anything other than an an average CCC team at best.

Some might think he is a bit abrasive though anyone who gets under the skin of Arsene Whinger is fine by me!

So I am certainly not unhappy with him as our manager. Apart from WGS who else was there realistically who could be considered a better option ?

A Good solid appointment who was not considered on the "polls" on here, shows how much we know.

i pushed for Alan Knill but Pardew is a good appointment, especially because he will have contacts both at our current level but also with higher clubs where loanees will come from

Decent appointment for this level, glad the wait is over. Hopefully ML will give him some cash, I am optimistic about the new season and hope everyone gets right behind the team

Now lets get behind him and the team and give him our full backing. This is the beginning of a new era. Onwards and upwards with Alan Pardews red and white army.

Pleased, english manager that knows the lower leagues and has a really good track record, charlton apart and that would have taken a miracle worker!! Wait for the whingers and cyber warriors who wanted a big name! In my opinion ideal man for the current position we find ourselves in - welcome.

Maybe some West Ham players on loan then :-)

Don't know if he was at Reading when Murty and Lita were there but put in the phone call anyway.

Then put one in to Matt Holland and get him in too.

Very happy with that appointment. Didn't do well at Charlton but not every club matches every manager, see the great Brain Clough at Leeds!

Tends to manage the players with an iron fist, and won't take any crap.

Welcome Alan, look forward to your tenure.

On the OS now. Happy with that. Never easy for someone to go back so Strachan may not have been the saviour we thought he could (including me). Very personable guy with a touch of charisma - not sure Charlton was a representative appointment as they were doomed at the time. Let's give him plenty of time and get behind him!

Blimey, I was about to check the OS site, in truth was expecting it to be on there sometime next week! Seems that is working like clockwork too now smileyvault-biggrin.gif

This appointment is proof that the ambitions of the Swiss are average at best.

It wouldn't be my choice but now he is here I hope that the owners back him financially otherwise we will just become an average L1 team.

The more I think about it the more I am liking it this morning!! there is no baggage, he has got the chance to stamp his own brand on the club!! i have forgotten about Charlton and am remebering his Reading days!! Good appointment imo!!!

i am not too sure what you really expected..

we are in the 3rd division on -10 points

who else in league 1 has pardews pedigree..?

Very happy with this appointment. Forgetting his time at Charlton he has a very good managerial record, took Reading to the play offs & then won League 1 back at the start of the decade, also took them to the Championship play offs. Then took West Ham up in the play offs & was literally seconds from winning the FA Cup with them.

Proven track record of getting teams through the lower divisions, exactly what we need.

The appointment of an ex prem manager with experience at many levels for a club in our position is a steal imo, WGS for sentimental reasons was always going to be favourable but this appointment is far from disappointing.

you are joking, right?

we are L1 with -10, we are lucky its not TA or worse. AP is a good manager, with a good record at this level. Average at best!!! hahahaa

For me, this is the perfet appointment. It shows real ambition from the new owners, a proven british manager with experience of getting out of these leagues, but equally as impirtant, a manager who is not going to up and leave at the first sign of success.

Should be able to bring in some good experienced players and keep our better players too.

Really, really happy with this appointment.

bring on L1

Forget Charlton Lord and his record is actually pretty good! I don't think it means the Swiss are average, we may be pleasantly surprised at end of season!! FWIW I also think he will be backed with money now, everyone knows, this team isn't good enough at mo!!! You never know, he may galvanise Raziak lol!!!!

This is unexpected.

I reckon he is a good choice for getting us back into the CCC and possibly the PL thereafter.

But then ?

Seems like a middle-term appointment. But what the hell, with a couple more years under his belt, even that may click.

We could have ended up with a lot, lot, worse.

The new owner is no fool! This is a smart appointment

I'm concerned that there is a Marks and Spencer's carrier bag stuffed with training gear sitting in the rain outside a house in Warsash. Someone should go collect it.

Very disappointed with this appointment but I suppose I was getting carried away with the speculation - specifically Coppell.

The club will now have to attract fans back to watch League 1 football by topping the League instead of surfing a wave of enthusiasm that another bigger name might have generated.

Still given where we are, we may not have had a choice.

Welcome Mr. Pardew.

It also seems to indicate that, with the perspective of investment, Saints remain an attractive destination for someone with AP's pedigree even in L 1 and - 10. Interesting times ahead.
