Popped down to SMS to renew my season ticket & decided to walk into town afterwards

I cut through East Street shopping centre...........what a sad, depressing place that is

There's 2 shops open - half price jewellery & knocked off cheap furniture

What's the council doing with it?

Can they knock it down?

bargate is trendy with the kids.

Surprised east street stays open. As someone said, must be the offices and car park attached that bring the rent and other cash in.

Anyone else remember Bejam?!(sp?)

Thats the answer to the trivia question " what was Iceland called befor it was Iceland?" ;)

I also remember the old Green Shield stamp shop down there

Did it not have a pub in it?

Technically The Royal Oak is built in to the side of it. The other one up East Street is The Anchor (used to be able to take your pints from there in to Nicks Restaurant LOL).

My memories of East Street Shopping Centre were:

Tandys

Top Trainers (the only place I bought trainers for years)

Courts Furniture

The Pine Shop (always had a sale on)

The cafe upstairs

Bejams

The Music Shop (Terrilles??)

The Pet Shop

Half Price Jewellers

Getting chased by what must have been the original SMMB!!!!!

A decent newsagents

A faint whiff of urine/wine/lager/meths

I remember going to Top Trainers there once as they had Gary Mason (ex British Heavyweight champion boxer) doing an appearnce cos of his sponsorship deal with Troop (remember them?) This must have been about 1990 and Lennox Lewis was just making a name for himself as a professional boxer.

This lad just in front of me in the queue to get his poster signed asked Gary if he wanted to fight Lennox Lewis, and his reply was "don't be stupid, I want to be world champion".

Ha ha. Gary retired shortly afterwards after losing his british title, and we all know what happened to Lewis.

I also remember a story about somebody buying some locusts from the pet shop and letting them loose in the shopping centre.

Wow, East Street it seems can be knocked down, and the Bargate had gone. Oh and so has that small shop called Debenhams. Been a busy 12 years with a wrecking ball.
