Would I be right in saying it was an afternoon of getting cans of Red Stripe from a beer tent somewhere near the Nursery?????

Possibly. In those un-enlightened times you could take your own in. We virtually re-assembled the County Club bar in the back row of the Upper Compton.:smt030:drinkers::smt078

LOL.

We took a few packs in coolbags, but considering we were on it from early doors combined with ending well into the evening, (judging by the darkness at the end) we ran out at some point.

I was surprised how much we got in a few years back for the C & G as I thought they were clamping down on this.

Gutted I'm missing this one as I've always enjoyed the rivalry with Suzzex (will be checking the interweb on a regular basis or expecting texts fromt those going).

And talking about beer, I remember the Natwest Semi at Edgbaston and there was a sign saying "excessive amounts of alcohol will be confiscated". When we asked what was excessive, the steward said no more than 16 cans per person!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We were probably sitting on top of you at the Ayling final - too it easy on the beer during the day but had a big night out after!

I'm pretty certain it was Waqar who bowled to Ayling, we could hardly see and were full of doom and gloom and recounting memories of how dark it had been in various village cricket games over the years and how this was darker.

We could see Waqar run in we could see Ayling swish but until everyone started hooting and hollering we had no idea what had happened,

Thanks for the info on the bars in the Grandstand, am planning on bringing me flag, hope there's somewhere to hang it!

Ground Regulations-

e. Small quantities of alcohol may be brought into the Ground, under the supervision of MCC who reserve the right to confiscate any quantity of alcohol from any spectator, and return it to such spectator at the end of the day’s play. The MCC Committee has set a limit of two pints of beer or one 75cl bottle of wine per spectator. Amounts of alcohol in excess of the limit will be confiscated. Under no circumstances will any spectator be re-admitted to the Ground at any time during the day if he or she is in possession of any alcohol.

As it was near the end of the match, then needless to say a few pints and 18 years may have dimmed the memory.

We were in the Lower Nursery and I thought the bowler (Bicknell??) was coming down from the Pavillion.

I thought Ayling who I think was left handed cut it/slapped it squarish into the stand to our left (or if he was right handed he had to be up the other end LOL) and it went in either the Mound or the Tavern. From underneath at the very back you couldn't see fck all when the ball went up in the air!!!!

Yep,Johnny Ayling was right handed,I know cos I used to play in the same team as him before he made it.A fine player, cruelly plagued by injury.

Great alcohol fuelled memories of that Edgbaston day Um.The Judge repeatedly smacking Donald for square fours.Scorching hot day too!

The Hampshire boys in the grass skirts were quality entertainment too.

Spoke to Mark Nicholas and Robin Smith some years later and they both picked out that day as a good one.
