Give it to Ron Posted 15 July, 2009 Share Posted 15 July, 2009 Did anyone else see the piece on TV last night about the QE2? Apparently its not been touched since its delivery into Dubai 8 months agao and sounded like Nakheel the owners are having cold feet about its plans. The plan was to remove the funnel and engine room and turn them into penthouse suites and entertainment but nothing has changed at all. There was talk of Nakheel sending it to South Africa to be used as hotel and accomodation for the WC to alleviate the massive shortage of rooms there. I still think Soton Council could of pushed for a grant to bring this to the waterfront and turn it into a massive tourist attraction for the city. Surely this was what the Lottery and Arts grants are for? Ok I know this council is allegedly skint but there are always ways to fund big projects like this. Our waterfront is a disgrace and you only have to look along the M27 to see what a big hit their dockyard is for tourism.

I suppose the Council could always use the funds they were going to use to buy SMS.

spyinthesky Posted 15 July, 2009 Share Posted 15 July, 2009 Great in theory BUT where will it go? Altho Soton Docks is struggling a bit during the recession every one of its deep water berths is used by regular customers. Even if a berth was to be made available ABP would want a fair amount of berth fees. Bearing in mind millions of UK residents have been on cruie ships, one visit is the best you can hope for, and then what? The ship is not really cut out for a hotel or conference centre. Who would buy the ship at say £25-£50m, pay for the internal improvements and, more importantly, pay for the upkeep as it rusts in our damp climate. Having said all that the vessels engines could provide a fair amount of electricity into the UK grid but the green brigade would soon be on this case. Would love to be proved wrong on this but cant see a business case being made

spyinthesky Posted 15 July, 2009 Share Posted 15 July, 2009 I very much doubt it. He seems to be an astute business man In fact he would be far better squandering/investing £25m + in or esteemed football club than sinking it into the QE2 Perhaps Pompey's prospective new owner might like to buy the ship and donate it to Soton in a gesture of goodwill. He could make a grand entrance direct from Dubai and get dropped off at the Palmerston Forts!!
Cosham Scientist Posted 16 July, 2009 Share Posted 16 July, 2009 Arrived on the QE2 in Nov '85; from Newport News VA via NYC. Probably my first ever sight of Southampton; it was dark though.
