I know a lot of you are parents, so hoping you've had this issue before.

My 4 year old is pointing at his groin and almost screaming in pain. When at rest, he's fine, and I notice the pain only hurts when he lifts his leg so I'm fairly certain its a groin strain and he did it on his scooter.

But what can we do for him, it seems pointless telling him 'dont use it' and i think giving him the Nintendo DS for the day and telling him to put his leg on a pillow is going to last about 30 minutes. Then of course, there's the nagging doubt it could be something else, even tho EVERY symptom points to a groin strain.

What can we do?

Go to the GP chap.

A day after playing 5 a-side i had excruciating pain in my groin,i thought it was a simple grion strain, when to the gp she disclosed that i had a hernia, even though there was no visible lump.

I was sent to see a specialist he however said i had stretched the tendon right up inside my groin which can be more painful than a hernia or a simple strain.

There was nothing that they could do but just to leave it to heal which could take upto 6 months. i was signed off for about 6 weeks in total, nothing i could do to relieve the pain.

At least if you get it diagnosed you may get some proper treatment for the nipper which maybe beneficial to someone so young.

Thanks both of you. Appt booked with gp for 11am. Poor sod starts summer holidays in 2 days, lets hope he doesnt have to spend most of it rested up.

It could be an inguinal hernia. Is there a lump there when he screams? If so. push it back in with your thumb and the pain should go.

Both my youngest had this and an operation is needed to repair. It's very common in boys.

Could also be "growing pains" Baj. Occasionally my 7 year old complains of pain, especially in his legs, when he seems to be on the verge of a growth spurt. Starangely enough he sometimes complains of pains in his body when he starts pushing though some adult teeth.

I make him sound like a little whinger, but he's not at all, his old man takes that title :)

Calpol as a pain relief and take him either to your GP or the local drop in center for professional advice.

Good luck

Definitely don't give him Calpol for something like this. There's a terrible record for side effects from giving paracetemol to small children and you should always avoid it unless they're getting a very high fever.

He's had calpol since he was born(ish) and never had ill effects. Over here its the kiddies ibuprofen they are getting you to avoid these days

Check out a condition called Perthes Disease.

Primarily found in young lads.

Groin pain is a symptom.

Caused by referred pain from the hip joint which flattens out and doesnt bond correctly with the femur.

It is a very curable condition, unlikely to involve operations or drugs, generally a few months in a plaster cast which takes a little getting used to.;

An X Ray will be required to check out the condition of the hip joint

Hope all goes well whatever the diagnosis

Is there?, didn't do my kids any harm?

Thank God for Calpol I say.

In The Lancet last year, it's surprisingly not that well known. It's something like a 60 percent higher risk of asthma later on if you use paracetemol when they're little.:

In 2008, the largest study to date on the long term side effects of paracetamol in children was published in The Lancet[/url]. Conducted on over 200,000 children in 31 countries, the study found that the use of paracetamol for fever in the first year of life was associated with an increase in the incidence of asthmatic symptoms at 6–7 years, and that paracetamol use, both in the first year of life and in children aged 6–7 years, was associated with an increased incidence of rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema.

Right, had a good look whilst getting him dressed (that was fun...not!) There's no lump whatsoever, i did give it a good press in the area he said it hurt and he winced a little like it was tender but didnt cry. The real pain comes from moving his leg in any direction and stretching the groin about, and he can put absolutely no weight on that leg at all.

Torn adductor muscle in the groin? Wouldnt say that was 'agony' or screaming pain, more of a discomfort. May well be different for a 4 year old mind...

Can he move his leg back and forth?

Check out hip dysplasia. My granddaughter has this (very mildly and doesn't need treatment until she's walking and by then it may well have corrected itself). Was your son born by C section by any chance? It's more common in children born by this procedure.

The worst thing you can do is try and diagnose the problem yourself and also ask for opinions from non medical backgrounds as this is pure opinion / speculation.'Corridor Medicine' is not only unhelpful to you but could also be damaging to your child especialy if you were convinced you had settled on somebody’s non medical opinion. Get yourself down to the GP for Professional Advice. If after you have seen your GP problems still persist go back and see another GP.

I would put any money on it in 2-3 days your nipper will be bouncing round the house with no pain at all! Kids are able to fix very quickly after problems such as this. :p

Irritable Hip. He's going to be off his feet for a couple of weeks, if its no better then we're off to hospital :(

Baj

What Mr Tickle says is correct and you have done the right thing in seeing your GP asap

Hopefully all will be fine in a day or two.

However if the groin ache does persist do ask your GP to consider a X Ray. My lad had persistent groin ache which was variously described as a virus/growing pains/hip irritation until an X ray gave the correct diagnosis

Baj, I agree with spy and think that he will be fine in a couple of days. But do push for further tests if it doesnt improve.

The fun part for you will be getting him to rest it. TV, games consoles, colouring etc. are usually good at keeping them still for short period of times. mine can never sit still for 5 minutes... so good luck.

Baj you were right to go to the doc. You cant mess around if a kid shows such distress.

Chip off the old block obviously

Poor little fella, just when the hols start.

Reference Calpol, this stuff has been a godsend at times for my little chap.

Seems to have really done the trick in times of need, and no apparent side effects as yet and i hope it remains that way.

Oh don't worry, I didn't find it funny either.

I posted the thread at 7ish in the morning, I made an appointment at 8 and by 11 we were at the GP, exactly how would you have handeled it differently?

I knew as soon as I posted that it was going to be taken the wrong way.

Im not saying you are a bad parent etc, just thought it was slightly weird.

I dont have kids, but if one of mine was pointing at his groin and screaming, I wouldnt think "I know, ill ask those ITK chaps on the Saints Forum"

We dont really have a track record for accurate information.

Also, you seem an intelligent person, did you really need us lot to tell you to see a Dr.

Without stating the obvious, it was perfectly bloody clear I was always going to take my son to the doctors and what I was actually asking was 'has anyone else ever had this before with their kids and what was it, and what did you have to do?'

As you can see the little blighter is really down in the dumps..

Didnt mean to cause offence, hope he makes a speedy recovery.

Don't you mean Baj is a bad parent? ;)

Not if he's trying to stop him biting his nails. I think it's a fair and measured response.

Sounds like good news

Amazing you got a GP appointment so quickly

The NHS is not that bad after all

Phone lines open at 8am, I just keep hitting redial til i get through, never had a problem getting an appointment but i guess that's because im more persistent than most.

I think Baj has a block appointment and probably fitted him in on that. If the forum match is anything to go by he will be on first name terms with most if not all the consultants.
