hypochondriac Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 I would be disappointed if we got Wise. Really don't want him.
View From The Top Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 If we appoint WGS I think I'll cry with happiness and FWIW, which isn't a lot, I believe we will appoint him for a number of reasons of which the primary reason is that it suits him. He'll have no pressure on him as he would in the EPL to produce instant result.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 GAAAAHH. I'm in torment. I trust you've not gone and inserted something in your bottom ready to run up Southampton High Street? :smt103
Saint Fan CaM Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 New Manager to be introduced to crowd on pitch on Saturday. You read it here first.

Matthew Le God Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 New Manager to be introduced to crowd on pitch on Saturday. You read it here first - cannot elaborate. Would be a good idea to announce that new manager will be unveiled on Saturday if this is the case to attract more people to the game.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 New Manager to be introduced to crowd on pitch on Saturday. You read it here first. ITK, pure guess or somewhere inbetween?!
Pilchards Posted 15 July, 2009 Author Posted 15 July, 2009 WGS now 5/4 with Skybet and favourite Adams is 66-1 now how bizarre?
Fowllyd Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 As a matter of interest, how much betting activity does it take to alter the odds on Skybet? My guess is that it's not very much at all, especially for a book with as little interest (relatively speaking) as this one. Cetrainly, that would explain the wild fluctuations in odds we keep seeing. It would also mean, of course, that basing one's view of who our manager will be on the Skybet favourite is more than somewhat daft.
StInky Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 (edited) Adams is 66-1 now how bizarre? Adams T 10/3 and second favourite. Edited 15 July, 2009 by StInky too many quotes!
istanbul Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 I think so - the bookies are just reacting to the bets they see - no inside knowledge. It's going to come down to who Liebherr trusts with his money. If you look at the candidates according to Skybet you can make 3 lists. If he picks somebody from List A then he intends to spend some biggish money. If he picks from List B it's because the wallet will be staying fairly tightly closed and we will be going for organic growth. List A – people I trust to spend my money wisely Gordon Strachan Steve Coppell Aidy Boothroyd Alan Pardew Christian Gross Glenn Hoddle Graeme Souness List B – people I don’t trust (no experience or poor track record) Tony Adams Paul Tisdale Alan Shearer Darren Ferguson Dennis Wise Ian Dowie Matt Le Tissier Kevin Keegan Kevin Bond List C – people I wouldn’t trust in the same building as my money Harry Redknapp
Tokyo-Saint Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Sorry about the Swiss thing, not my rumour. As I said read it on the Ugly Inside. BTW - I would 100% put Ferguson on the A-List. Everything I have heard or seen about him, sounds as good as if not better (potential) than his dad. i.e. 5 minute half time breaks followed by on pitch training sessions to keep muscles warm in the break. This reulted in his team scoring more goals between 45-50 minutes than any other team in the counrty.

martyg1950 Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Erm..... I'd be the first to admit that I do miss the bleedin obvious sometimes, but I get the impression I'm looking at some sort of parrallel universe here? Thread after thread bandies around 'big name' actual or wannabe managers.... Why would any of them sign up for a LEAGUE 1 Club, with hardly any players, 5000 st's sold, -10 points and hardly any time to do anything about it before the season KO? Too big a risk for the CV regardless of money isn't it? Hopefully I'm wrong and you're all right, I would love to see wee Gordon back but seriously? I don't see it. Maybe I should up the medication....
skintsaint Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 List B – people I don’t trust (no experience or poor track record) Darren Ferguson wierd, would have him here in a shot.

Could be any number of reasons - affinity with the club, seeing the long term potential, big fan-base, state of the art stadium & training facilities, new board with a long term vision, billionairre owner etc. etc. League 1 or not, Southampton IS a plumb job for anyone trying to prove themselves, trying to resurrect their career, or just looking for a long-term challenge...
Joensuu Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 istanbul... I think I've sorted those lists for you: 'Yes' list: Gordon Strachan Steve Coppell Aidy Boothroyd Christian Gross Paul Tisdale Darren Ferguson Kevin Keegan 'Unsure' list: Glenn Hoddle Alan Pardew 'No thanks' list: Tony Adams Graeme Souness Alan Shearer Dennis Wise Ian Dowie Kevin Bond Harry Redknapp (sorry, but MLT would be on the 'No' list for me too, I just didn't have the heart to stick him in a list with Bagpuss...)

Maybe I should up the medication.... I get it perfectly. The fact is we are a fantastic opportunity for a manager. It's the same reason that we will become people's favourite club to manage on football manager. Bit of a challenge first season but expectations significantly lowered (so even upper mid table will still feel fairly positive and everyone will gear up for the big push next season.) By far the richest club in league one and hopefully with significant funds (for this level) to be able to build the team how they want. If it is also part of a five year plan, I would imagine it would be very attractive and is the same reason that Kelvin stayed. He wants to be part of the start of the revival of our club. If WGS came here then promotion would be significantly easier to achieve than at many other clubs and if he was successful he could massively enhance his already impressive CV. The type of man we are looking for is one who doesn't see the negatives but who is excited by the challenge and can see the obvious long term benefits both to themselves and to the club. If I was WGS or the other candidates I would want the job.

Maybe I should up the medication.... But isn't this actually a 'perfect' scenario: "LEAGUE 1 Club" - meaning we will be up against relatively weak opposition. "with hardly any players" - a manager will see this as a perfect chance to bring in the players they want."5000 st's sold" - but with a 2003 fanbase which was 14th biggest in the English leagues (excluding Scotland); and with many fans waiting to see who is the new manager... Almost a exact description of a 'sleeping giant'... "-10 points and hardly any time to do anything about it before the season KO" - agreed, but I can't imagine it will be too long before a manager is appointed. And I imagine that they will be given one of the largest transfer budgets in league 1... (probably larger than most Championship clubs...) "Too big a risk for the CV" - not at all. As managerial jobs go, this would be relatively low risk, and very tempting to add to your CV... Big club, high profile, plenty of money, free choice of players, relatively easy league - this is almost the perfect job for almost any manager. Perhaps it's these rose tints, but you could be right, it could be the medication

Azor Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Would absolutely love either WGS, KK or Darren Ferguson. Also if we had Le god in some capacity I would literally cry with happiness.

We'll need a squad to get us through that and have to rebuild again for higher leagues. I guess it all hangs on the new owners objectives/timescales/budgets. To be fair we don't know much about those atm. Damn this is exciting and apologies for drifting toward 'off topic' which is 'who' not 'why'
RinNY Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 My 'Yes' list: Gus Poyet Gordon Strachan Steve Coppell Aidy Boothroyd Christian Gross Paul Tisdale Darren Ferguson Kevin Keegan 'Unsure' list: Alan Curbishley Alan Pardew 'No thanks' list: Glenn Hoddle Tony Adams Graeme Souness Alan Shearer Dennis Wise Ian Dowie Kevin Bond Harry Redknapp Odd lists. I really don't see WGS going from Celtic and Champion's League games to taking on Saints again. Why would he? Not like he's a Saints fan born and bred: he'll have bigger opportunities if he wants to manage again, I should think. As to KK, does anyone really think he still has the passion and desire and commitment the Saints job will need? I don't. I wouldn't want him as manager in our current circumstances. Alan Pardew? I wouldn't want that overrated and disloyal so-and-so within a hundred miles of our club. But Curbishley? He'd be a fantastic choice, except that he's looking for a big Prem club to manage, not us. And why Dennis Wise on the "no thanks" list? Does no-one recall the fantastic job he was doing with Leeds and their -15 point srtarting position, until he was lured away by Mike Ashley's moneybags? Had he stayed at Leeds (as I suspect he wishes he had) they'd almost certainly have won promotion in spite of their dire financial position and negative 15 starting position. He did a good job at Milwall too. I can't think of many managers I'd pick over Dennis Wise for our current position: knows the league, knows how to get it done at this level, hard-nosed little bastard, just what we need I'd have said!
Muvvers Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 I work for The Sun and was told by the sports desk last night that Tony Adams turned down the job (thank christ!) thinks he's up for a better job than us! Then I was told it would be WGS now???? Only relaying what I was told....

Dr Who? Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Really hope you're right, Kev. As you know, I was a Keegan man but if Strachan can use his clout to get the spending going, that would be ace too. I do not believe you are even watching me in here. Looking forward to Saturday. Well we will see who is appointed and I think it will be WGS, but league 1 really does scramble my brain to the question....why?
Muvvers Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 I agree...a bit worrying that. At work now just going to have a word with the sports guys...

Papa Shango Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Why are people anti Dennis Wise? Is this not the man who took MillfeckingWall to the Cup Final... how short some memories are... Their run to the final was even easier than ours.

What a total k**b- hope he finishes on the scrap heap :toimonster: like all those other natural born leaders. stick to playing chopsticks on the piano, tone... Edited 15 July, 2009 by shurlock
surrey1saint Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 My guess(and thats all it is) is that Adams was offered a coaching role,WGS would be offered the managers job?
Legod Third Coming Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Their run to the final was even easier than ours. Win ratio with Swindown over 50% Leeds over 47% Millwall over 40% Seriously, have a look at some of our best managers!!! Not saying he's top of my list but he's done a bloody good job wherever he's managed.
SaintsAddict Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Those are all excellent points (snipped for brevity) The only one I'd take issue with is the notion that this will be a 'relatively easy league' I think it will prove to be a highly physical - at times skill snuffing league. To be fair we don't know much about those atm. Damn this is exciting and apologies for drifting toward 'off topic' which is 'who' not 'why' Not so sure about that, while we have been in the CCC the promoted teams have generally done very well and have played attractive football. If we can build a side that can be successful in League 1 then I don't think it will need a huge amount more investment to be successful in the CCC. Having said that though, this would need us to invest considerably in L1 to get a competitive team together and also the right manager to lead us forwards. So I really hope these WGS rumours are true. [-o
SaintNeil90 Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 I agree...a bit worrying that. At work now just going to have a word with the sports guys... Reading through previous posts ive come to the conclusion that you just 'want' to be ITK. All your posts consist of: 'Im ITK because Tony Lynam drinks in my local' 'Im ITK... Keegan for manager' 'Im ITK... Tony lives down my street' and now 'Im ITK because I work for the Sun' I could be wrong but thats the conclusion I've come to.
