pele Posted 14 July, 2009 Posted 14 July, 2009 I know, I know there is a long way to go before the season starts but who do you think will be in the side when we beat Millwall!! My best bet looking at the friendlies - Davies Murty/Thomas/Perry/Mills Gillett/Wotton/James/Holmes Raisak/Patterson Subs- Poke and nobody else really realistic! Lancashire has to go so does Bart man unfortunately as for Pulis please retire or something!!!
Matthew Le God Posted 14 July, 2009 Posted 14 July, 2009 Simon Gillett is not a wide midfielder and who is Davies in goal?
chrisobee Posted 14 July, 2009 Posted 14 July, 2009 Holmes is always injured Yes, I think he played about a dozen games last year. Good young player though I reckon so IF he can stay fit who knows.
Evil Monkey Posted 14 July, 2009 Posted 14 July, 2009 Swap Gillet and James around. Bring in Gobern for Holmes (likely to be injured). Still doesnt look good. Hopefully we'll have a few new faces by then.
chrisobee Posted 14 July, 2009 Posted 14 July, 2009 Simon Gillett is not a wide midfielder and who is Davies in goal? Kelvin Davi(e)s of course
Matthew Le God Posted 14 July, 2009 Posted 14 July, 2009 Kelvin Davi(e)s of course I know. I'm just still surprised by the number of people that get confused with the surnames Davies and Davis
Arizona Posted 14 July, 2009 Posted 14 July, 2009 Davis Murty - Thomas - Perry - Mills James - Gillett - ?????? - ?????? Rasiak - Saga/Lallana I'd say we really only have those 10 players who are up to first team standards in League 1 at the mo. Much more quality and depth required IMO.
pele Posted 15 July, 2009 Author Posted 15 July, 2009 Aside from the spelling lessons - thanks I am glad you didn't spot Rasiak as well! It doesn't look too good at the moment!
Fowllyd Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Aside from the spelling lessons - thanks I am glad you didn't spot Rasiak as well! It doesn't look too good at the moment! Or Paterson...
eelpie Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Davis Murty/Thomas/Perry/Mills Lallana/James/Gillett/Gobern Rasiak/Paterson subs Saga, Wotton, Poke, Lancashire, Holmes if fit or new signing We have a problem on the wings with Holmes always injured. Lallana has the intelligence and skills to test defenders there so worth a try if Lloyd is to reclaim his place in midfield, which I think he should. Gobern has potential, and could be his year, though too lightweight at the moment for this league. He needs to strengthen his body, as do most of them. Much depends on feeding Rasiak and understanding his opportunistic positional play. Rasiak knows he has to play well if he is to get out of this division. (I wish we had had him last season, but then we would probably not ended up with our new owner)
pele Posted 15 July, 2009 Author Posted 15 July, 2009 Is Jake Thomson too lightweight to give a try to?
SaintBobby Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Is Jake Thomson too lightweight to give a try to? He was quite good at Bournemouth until he pulled up injured. I keep changing my mind on being pro or anti Lallana, but am sure he's better in a central rather than wide position.
saintmonkey1979 Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Isn't Saga deployed on the right of midfield for Poland at times? I'm sure I remember seeing him play there and looking accomplished and effective there. I reckon he could possibly do a job for us in that position too.
Bailey Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 (edited) Hopefully we'll be in a position to field the likes of Schneiderlin, Saganowski and Rasiak, as well as a couple of the out-of-contract players. I'd also like to have a proper look at Murty to see what he has to offer. Maybe something along the lines of the following: ----------------- Davis ----------------- Murty ----- Perry ----- Thomas ----- Mills Lallana ---- James ---- Gillett ---- Holmes -------- Saganowski -- Rasiak ------------ Subs: Forecast, Lancashire, Schneiderlin, McNish, Doble, Paterson, Thomson. EDIT - Just realised I mis-read the original post completely. My bad! The above team is what I'd like to see us field on Saturday. No idea what it'll be come August 8th! Tac-tics Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Where the hell have half of these posters came from?Surely not woodwork fans?
pele Posted 15 July, 2009 Author Posted 15 July, 2009 Tac-tics (sic) if you have nothing to say why bother?! Have a look at when I joined aaaaagggghhh we are having a footie discussion not a spelling or slagging off .... Some people!
Baird of the land Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Davis Murty Thomas Perry Mills Thomson Sneiderlin Gillett Holmes Lallana Saga Subs:Forecast,James,Rasiak,Patterson,Gobern, wotton
disintegration87 Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 definitely have Lee Holmes playing as he is as good as Arjen Robben.....according to Poortvliet.
The Godfather Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Davis Murty Thomas Perry Mills Thomson Sneiderlin Gillett Holmes Lallana Saga Subs:Forecast,James,Rasiak,Patterson,Gobern, wotton Good bet for the line up on Saturday. Would play with two out & out strikers though.
Johnny Shearer Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Where the hell have half of these posters came from?Surely not woodwork fans? I'm sure many didnt want to bother with a Board that has/had people continually sniping at one another. I stopped bothering with the Saints booard as it was the same old threads over and over and over again!
chrisobee Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 I know. I'm just still surprised by the number of people that get confused with the surnames Davies and Davis Yes, it is really simple, we used to have the great Ron Davis, now we have Kelvin Davies

pele Posted 15 July, 2009 Author Posted 15 July, 2009 Remember people we are now a united front (with the odd strange folk - Alpine comes to mind, although recent posts are proving he has regained his love of the club....like many others of us- who still went to matches but didn't feel the need to boast on a message board that was split between various factions supporting various directors) Anyway back to the footie - do you think this team is strong enough to overcome the -10 quickly and start climbing the league?
saints_is_the_south Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Anybody who is suggestion Lloyd James is played at right mid is mad! Yes he's got a great cross on him but thats about it as far as playing anywhere on the right side, be it in defence or midfield, is concerned. He has no pace & is simply not a winger! Put him back in his proper position as DM. Starting XI for Millwall at this stage would be: Davis Murty - Thomas - Perry - Mills Thomson - Gillett - James - Holmes Rasiak - Paterson/Saga/John Seriously need to strengthen at CB, LB & RM though. Shame we didn't sign Saeijs before Wotte left, doubt he'll come now but he'd be great in L1 alongside Thomas imo.
pele Posted 15 July, 2009 Author Posted 15 July, 2009 Agree with lloyd James in the middle, a Cb to either replace or cover Perry and Thomas is essential! Lancashire is NOT that man!
John B Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Remember people we are now a united front (with the odd strange folk - Alpine comes to mind, although recent posts are proving he has regained his love of the club....like many others of us- who still went to matches but didn't feel the need to boast on a message board that was split between various factions supporting various directors) Anyway back to the footie - do you think this team is strong enough to overcome the -10 quickly and start climbing the league? I dont really know 1 The strength of the other teams in the Division 2 What new players we will bring in but at the moment I would have thought that we will be in the relegation zone for sometime
Scummer Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 he's got a great cross on him but thats about it as far as playing anywhere on the right side, be it in defence or midfield, is concerned. He has no pace & is simply not a winger! You could say the same about David Beckham. Very few teams play traditional wingers these days.

Think we need a few new faces though as looking good on paper doesnt always provid the results needed.

As said, a stronger CB to go alongside Thomas & LB & RM & i think we'll be looking good.
Andy_Porter Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 If we're going with just players who have featured in the friendlies and only taking those into account and not previous season form etc then... Davis Murty Perry Thomas Mills Thomson Gillett James Gobern Paterson Rasiak Pretty much picks itself imo, if Thomson is still injured then push james to the right and play Wotton. We really need two new wingers asap before the Millwall game, the only time we've had any width so far in pre season was when Gobern played left wing in the first half again Totton.

As said, a stronger CB to go alongside Thomas & LB & RM & i think we'll be looking good. Don't really see the need for a left back with Mills and Reeves on our books. Mills is ready for league one now and Reeves looks very promising from the four pre season games. Signing a new LB would just harm their development. Agree about a CB and RM, we really need a left winger though. There is no way Holmes can be relied upon.
Mr X Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Most people i have spoken to have said saints have been truely dire! in pre-season friendlies I mean shockingly bad! and that with the current team we will surely be dropping down yet again if we dont get a few decent players in Do most people agree with this statement?
St Marco Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 Watched 2 of the friendlies and in all honesty just like i said last year we will struggle without some new players coming in. My view the team will looklike this ----------------Davis--------- James----Perry---new guy/Wotten---new guy/Mills Thomson ---New guy/Morgan---Gillett---new guy/Lallana -----------Rasiak/John----Saga-------- 4 new players needed just to begin with. The team needs to score goals to win and we lack players able to create those chances, even more so now Surman has gone. Thomson and Klaggon (is that how you spell it?) are our young bright sparks with a bit of flair. But they are nowhere near the level required to get out of this league yet, they are youngsters for the future. Last season shows what happens when you put people who are not ready for the first team into your side to soon. Players like Wotten and Euell are past it, if we are building a team for promotion then they will not help it. Morgan could be a good player if he get's his head down and gives his all but to rely on him would be stupid. We need players who will wear the shirt with pride and get around the pitch. While John/Saga and Rasiak hardly fit that bill they score goals and that is what we need. If John and Rasiak can re-create their goal prowess of a few seasons ago they will bag a lot of goals between them. I really hope we get the manager situation finished by the end of the week as new season is almost 3 weeks away.

I've been to all four and I pretty much agree. I don't really think it means much at the moment though, it's the next four that are important, hopefully we will have a manager in place for at least 2 out of 3. Basically we seem quite solid at the back, funny five minutes against Totton and Bournemouth aside but have no creativity or shape going forward, hopefully it should come before Millwall.
mcjwills Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 ----------------- Davis ----------------- Davis ----- Davis ----- Davis ----- Davis Davis ---- Davis ---- Davis ---- Davis -------- Davis -- Davis------------ Subs: Davis, Davis, Davis, Davis, Davis, Davis, Davis. I think this is about the best team we can put out
saintstr1 Posted 15 July, 2009 Posted 15 July, 2009 I think for Saturday Strachan would pick :- Davis Murty , Thomas , Perry , Molyniux ( SP) James, Gillett, Morgan S , Mills Rasiak , Patterson
amsterdam Posted 21 April, 2010 Posted 21 April, 2010 I know it's still mathematically possible to make the play-offs, but realistically we'll be in this division next year. I should say that I've really enjoyed this season and it's a pleasure to follow the Saints closely again, and care about all things Saints! I had a rummage through some pre-season threads and came across this one - it really shows how far we've come, no?!
ottery st mary Posted 21 April, 2010 Posted 21 April, 2010 Looking back at some of the team selections...quite clearly Div 2 standard whereas now we have a prospective CCC standard side..... Ever Onwards and upwards. Pards is the main man.. COYRs
Frank's cousin Posted 21 April, 2010 Posted 21 April, 2010 Funny how not many rated Lallana after his first real season... arguably our best talent
