offix Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 Many people on here seem to be a little obsessed by the fact that we have a rich owner. I understand that at the B'mouth game there were chants by the Saints fans referring to "our" 2.5 billion. Forget the billions people! yes, Mr. Liebherr may be worth about 2.5 billion, but that does not mean that the Saints will have access to that kind of money. Mr. Liebherr did not make his fortune by spending silly money on anything. It is my guess that he will be spending sensibly, and probably much more slowly than some on here would like to see. We won't be doing a Chelsea and buy ourselves a Prem team. We won't be doing a ManCity and buy players that are way above our station in life. I do expect that Mr. Liebherr will be willing to invest in players and a manager that can get us out of this league within a season or two, while at the same time making sure that the club is financially sound and can even make some money for him. In other words, sensible spending. Nothing spectacular. But then again, the fact that the club is even alive, and can look forward to really competing, is pretty spectacular by itself.
treggs23 Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 agree with this...am I the only one that got embarrassed when fans were all over the press talking about our owner having ' a nice wedge' or 'plenty of cash'...just be glad we're saved and able to look forward to a secure future.
Scummer Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 Mr. Liebherr did not make his fortune by spending silly money on anything. Very true. He inherited it didn't he?
Papa Shango Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 The chants at Bournemouth were just a bit of fun. No need to take them so seriously. I think everyone knows we aren't going to go on a Man City style spending spree any time soon.

Couldn't agree more. The QPR fans waving money at Chelsea springs to mind and it doesn't really seemed to have done them much good.
BARCELONASAINT Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 Totally agree. I havent got overly excited about our new rich owner, just mighty glad the club is alive and kicking. I expect us to survive in this league this season and if lucky maybe even get to the playoffs.....but realistically i expect next season would be the one to look for promotion.
Thedelldays Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 if anyone needs to be told that we are not going to spend guzzilions then they should throw themselves off of the itchen bridge for being an idiot
Ken Tone Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 Very true. He inherited it didn't he? Err no, not exactly. Has built up own business empire worth billions, admittedly after an inital leg up from family. But then apparently Alan Sugar's parents helped him at first too ;-) K.
sussexsaint Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 However in order for him to make a significant return on his investmen there is only one way to do that and that is to get us into the Premiership. One must speculate to accumulate
thesaint sfc Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 If he doesn't spend at least a billion this season, I expect fans will be calling for his head at the beginning of next season.
shurlock Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 I don't think the cash is irrelevant - yes, he will spend wisely but from what he's said, he won't be afraid to spend if we are challenging, whether in L1, the Championship or elsewhere. Strachan left because he didn't have the resources to take us to the next level - I don't think that would have happened had we then had the current regime. For me, its potential to kick on when we are successful that makes new ownership so exciting.

One must speculate to accumulate No, not really. He bought this club for "only" 15 million. If he can keep/make the club financially sound and get us into the CCC than he could probably double his money with 3-4 years. That's great return on investment.
hypochondriac Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 I realise this. This will not stop me doing things such as making jokes about other clubs, talking about buying kaka at the pub and waving twenty pound notes at the opposition.

Organic and prudent growth but where and when extra investment is required, it is available. Hr. Liebherr is on record that he wants to get us back into the Premier League and to do that he will need to speculate.

Agree - And how refreshing that will be too !
sussexsaint Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 do you really think that...? I'm afraid I agree TDD- even in our Premiership days Lowe used to quote figures in the order of £20m at the time I'm sure of it
offix Posted 13 July, 2009 Author Posted 13 July, 2009 do you really think that...? Yup, an established CCC club that is financially sound? THAT is the kind of club that could easily attract the attention, and the money, of the mega rich Middle Eastern crowd. The kind of folks that would be trying to "do a ManCity". Mr. Liebherr would be able to sell the club for quite a lot more than he has invested in it. That seems like a very plausible scenario to me.
Kingsland Red Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 I agree with sussex saint, to get a return of any sort, Herr Liebherr needs to get the club into the Premiership asap. He would not have bought the club to fund a long period of stagnation in the lower leagues. Therefore I believe expectations should be relatively high.

SaintBobby Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 No one thinks he's going to spend all his £2.5bn. (just so I get this right, that £2,500,000,000, yes?). BUT: 1. He will spend some of it. I'm hoping and expecting that we will be the biggest spenders in League One by some margin. If he spends £10m on new players and associated salaries this year, that amounts to 0.4% of his personal fortune. That's barely worth even acknowledging in his book-keeping given that his exposure in stocks and shares, currencies, property etc must be 100s of millions per annum. 2. It seems unlikely to me that we will ever be within days of liquidation while he is in charge. Or that the staff will go unpaid. Or that we will have to sell players in order to appease Barclays Bank.
westofshannonsaint Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 The chants at Bournemouth were just a bit of fun. No need to take them so seriously. I think everyone knows we aren't going to go on a Man City style spending spree any time soon. Well Said, no harm in us fans enjoying our moment, god knows we have had not had many moments to enjoy lately. However, even if ML does not invest on a man city scale, I think mos fans realise Saints is now Debt free and can move forward without massive investment, and it is nice to know that there is money there to get the right people in for the job. If ML lives up to the following, I will be more than happy. Well i won't be signing kaka , he is a player on a different level to us , what we will do is progrees to higher divisions step by step , higher divisions require higer level players as our investment will tell

offix Posted 13 July, 2009 Author Posted 13 July, 2009 do you really think he got us with a view of off loading us in say 2 years...? Bought us "with a view of off loading in 2 years"? No. I do not think that. However, as the prudent businessman that he seems to be I am pretty sure that he has considered that a scenario as I described is a great "safety net" if things should change. As long as he can keep the club financially sound AND steadily moving upwards in the leagues (however slowly that may be) he will be making money, and the club will become worth more and more. Do I believe that he will sell the club at some point for a healthy profit? Absolutely. Making money is the ultimate purpose of doing business.
Weston Super Saint Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 Forget the billions people! yes, Mr. Liebherr may be worth about 2.5 billion, but that does not mean that the Saints will have access to that kind of money. Glasgow_Saint Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 I understand that the new manager will be given the following 20 Million (To get us promoted from League 1 in 1 year) 40 million (To get us promoted from Championship in 1 year) 100 Million (To keep us in the prem for 2 years) 250 Million (Year 5 challenge for top 6 in prem)
westofshannonsaint Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 it's just a bit of fun. i believe most of us have sung we're by far the greatest team the world has ever seen. well, i've got news for you... lol, that always makes me chuckle, along with "its just like watching Brazil"

Scoobysaint Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 I think the main reason he bought us was as a sweetener so that he could be in on the development of docks over at Dibden. Less people will object if its the new saviour of the club looking to get his cranes in. Only a theory though. I'm just happy we've still got a club!

dignified_blunderer Posted 13 July, 2009 Posted 13 July, 2009 I did post this on the shearer thread also but seems relevant here also. Russian eurosport yesterday was claiming shearer would get 40 million to spend if he was appointed. http://www.eurosport.ru/football/flashnews_sto1999992.shtml Translated «Southampton» is ready to offer hapless helmsman «Newcastle» Alan Shearer trainer post and killing for a third division club Transfer budget of 40 million pounds. Interest «sacred» in one of the best forwards in the annals of British football and has a historical reason: it is in this city and this team of young Shearer 20-odd years ago for the first time established itself as a player.
