Don't get me wrong I love Dimi..but why did he win the toss & put Somerset in?. Even the Somerset captain admits that Taunton is 'too good' a wicket (they succesfully chased 475 last week). It also means we can't have Tahir bowling on it on the last day. It's got to be one of the most baffling decisions of the season. Of course I am relying on Cricinfo being correct when it states we won the toss.

Yes we did win the toss and I also have no idea why Dimi put Somerset in as indeed I have no idea why he promoted Tahir to No 4 in a recent 20/20 game! I love him as a player as well but sometimes I think we are better of when Pothas is in charge.

I've got no real problem with Dimi as captain, I think he's pretty good...but every so often he does make a absolute crakers decision. I too was baffled by the promotion of Tahir. I wonder sometimes if he's trying too hard to emulate Warne's style of captaincy by making 'suprise' decisions. But i've got to say I wouldn't want anyone else as captain. chrisobee Posted 12 July, 2009 Share Posted 12 July, 2009 To make things worse Pothas is injured again ( groin strain) and Crawley took over until Burrows arrived. Ervine also took a knock on the finger, hopefully not too serious.
Lets B Avenue Posted 12 July, 2009 Share Posted 12 July, 2009 Just a guess, but as the wicket is so good there and the boundaries short, it dosen't really pay to bowl last. As stated earlier Somerset chased 475 last week. Dimi probably hoped to knock a few over early on the 1st day as we did a couple of seasons ago when Tomlinson got 7 for. To an extent it worked but we let the middle order get away. The question I was asking, was why didn't Dawson bowl until the 2nd afternoon? I always think if you're batting ion arguably the best strip in world cricket you've always got to bat first to give your self the best chance to win (that 475 was the 2nd biggest chase ever, so it was a bit of a freak), it's just so draining for the players to bat after standing in the field for two days. You are quite right about Dawson, i've only just noticed that he only bowled 7 overs? That is a pretty wierd decision.
Leicestersaint Posted 12 July, 2009 Author Share Posted 12 July, 2009 Hants are 157 for 4 - Carberry is 103 no - steady collapse at the other end. I can see us following on here and losing. We seem to have gone to pot in the championship.
Leicestersaint Posted 12 July, 2009 Author Share Posted 12 July, 2009 186 for 5 - Carberry still there - everyone else letting us down.
chrisobee Posted 12 July, 2009 Share Posted 12 July, 2009 (edited) 186 for 5 - Carberry still there - everyone else letting us down. Famous last words but at least we have decent depth to our batting and Pothas must either be in or still to come as I think his injury would mean he has to bat 7 or lower. Yep, I put the jinx on. Dimi out for 0 so 186/6 though Pothas is due in next injury permitting. Edited 12 July, 2009 by chrisobee Update :(
chrisobee Posted 12 July, 2009 Share Posted 12 July, 2009 Ah, it is lunchtime so yet to see who comes in at 8. Carberry 121 off 129 balls which is about his 20/20 strike rate!

We're in the top division but none of batsmen are knocking on England's door. I think we need two class batsmen to come through the ranks. The bowlings pretty good though. chrisobee Posted 13 July, 2009 Share Posted 13 July, 2009 Hants 213-4 at lunch, 33 behind. Dawson made 69, Crawley 34* ( off 181 balls!) and Ervine 16*. Should really secure a draw from here.

keithd Posted 13 July, 2009 Share Posted 13 July, 2009 4 down and 11 behind. almost as exciting as the England game... maybe not. not so sure about the draw still, lose a couple before tea only 40 head and we could be in for a nervous final session. is it 80 overs a day in 4 day cricket? bungle Posted 13 July, 2009 Share Posted 13 July, 2009 105 overs per day. I thought they'd reduced it slightly this year? It always used to be 104, 104, 104, 90. Now I believe it is 96 overs each day. Could be more today because of time lost due to rain. I shall check.
bungle Posted 13 July, 2009 Share Posted 13 July, 2009 Apparently it is now 96 overs a day, and time can only be made up on the day it is lost. Therefore 96 overs today and play will finish at 6pm.
