Saints star Wright-Phillips cleared of burglary

By Lucy Clark

SAINTS footballer Bradley Wright-Phillips has been acquitted of a charge of burglary following a theft from a Hampshire nightclub.

The striker this afternoon walked free from Portsmouth Magistrates Court after district judge Anne Arnold ruled there is not enough evidence against him.

It was alleged that Wright-Phillips had been involved in the theft of £85, three mobile phones a driving licence and bank cards from the staff room of the Bar Bluu nightclub in Southsea in February.

Wright-Phillips, 23, of High Street, Southampton, admitted being there, but not having a role in the theft.

After watching CCTV footage from the night, Mrs Arnold acquitted Wright-Phillips on the grounds it could not be proved he was involved in or encouraged the burglary.

Last month, fellow Saints star Nathan Dyer admitted his part in the burglary. He was sentenced to 60 hours community service.

If the evidence was so inconclusive how on Earth did it ever come to court? What a waste of taxpayers money

Hardly walking away with a clear reputation is he. It seems more like lack of enough evidence that they could build a case around.....

Well done to the Crown Prosecution Service then for bringing a charge without enough evidence.

Mind you, don't think there is a law in Blighty these days for being drunk and incredibly stupid.

Let's hope he can now put this behind him and move on.

Preferably to Plymouth and give us a loan fee as well

Something which would have been considered before charges being brought, first by a custody sergeant then CPS direct, when viewing what limited footage of cctv was in the public domain it was evident from that he was not guilty of those charges, complicity yes burglary no and those that brought about the charges should be held accountable for the waste of tax payers money, despite his aquittal some will still label him guilty, which is wrong imo

Still guilty in a lot of peoples eyes no matter what the court says....

Only those who have no sense of justice, and therefore largely irrelevant people. In the eyes of the law the guy is innocent. There it should rest and BWP should not be subjected to any insults related to this event. he should get as much support from the supporters as his ability and effort deserves.

well, those who hand him guilty and bang too rights might just shut up now....the experts and law people have him NOT GUILTY...

There's a big difference between being not guilty and being acquitted. Those who saw the video will have their own views. But let's move on. What he does on the pitch is more important.

Because IMO there are probably people in the police force not unlike some posters on this forum (are you reading this John Wesley Tender?) who prefer to make judgements on what they think they know rather than the do some detailed investigation into the facts. Furthermore, and I hate to say this living a multi-cultural society, but IMO the colour of his skin and his young wealth probably had something to do with it. BWP clearly had no role in the theft and appears to have been accused merely on the fact he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was a champagne arrest that served no purpose IMO than to discredit BWP. Shall we arrest everyone who has simply walked into a room or place whilst a crime is being committed? A suspect or a witness by all means but arrested on the strength of that cctv footage?

Unfortunately, for Bradley who is a really decent bloke who has been well brought up the sh1t will stick because of the unforgiving prejudice of others and their inability to admit they were wrong. Personally, Bradley I wish you all the best and you get a club with fans more supportive of your decent nature and footballing abilities which have no doubt suffered because of this whole sorry saga.

If I remember the CCTV "evidence" Dyer was in the room and seen "looking in a handbag" On what I would assume was legal advice he pleaded guilty.

BWP was seen at the doorway looking in. He did not enter the room and no real evidence he was "keeping a watch out" Evidence for him was by association only but quite rightly, without any other evidence BWP's legal advice was to plead not guilty and apply for a hearing. The Judge made the correct decision in my opinion.

Let's hope his acquittal will lead to a loan with someone. He is not doing the business for us on his alleged high earnings.

Irrespective of innocent, guilty or just being a thwat, the judge has got this spot on. The original tape showed BWP doing nothing more than acting like a pratt. If he says he thought it was a prank, there is nothing there that shows otherwise.

As for the CPS, they put the local nutter Barry George away for years on just a fraction of the evidence here.

I know a friend of Ian, Shaun and Bradley's from SE London who talks to them regularly. He told me earlier in the year that he'd spoken to Bradley about what had happened and told him what an idiot he'd been. Bradley admitted that he had been a prat and that he should never have been there, but denied that he had been involved in any stealing as he'd been joking with other people while standing near the door at the time. From what I've heard this seems to have been bourne out by the evidence.

I don't often get on my high horse but I'm willing to bet that most of those who are willing to jump to conclusions about this case have done stuff they'd rather they haven't at some point in the past.

Give the abuse a rest. Get on with supporting the team, including BWP. Getting on his back if he plays aint gonna help anyone.

Maybe now that BWP has been cleared, he could do the victims a favour and give the police the names of those who committed the actual offence along with Dyer (of course Dyer could always provide the police with their names as well).

Being such a model citizen, I think that would be something he could easily do.
