you do realise he has a better record than martin o'neil..

to get celtic to beat AC Milan and reach the knock out stages of the CL and puching AC Milan to extra time in the San Siro is sketchy...then that will do for me..

Fair point, like I say 'sketchy' could definately be argued, it was just a view of some Celtic friends i have. I do feel though that Rangers at the time of O'Neill were very different to Rangers now.

A really good point about AC Milan though, although I think it just highlights even more so why he wouldnt come to us.

Keegan / Strachan / Hoddle. Either would do. What i think is important is that we have a manager who'll be able to attract good players - something that is going to be very hard to do given the sides we'll be playing and the grounds we'll be playing at. We want individuals who want to come to Saints because of the manager and the chance to work under them. We dont want to have players who are just here for the money. The former will give motivation off and on the pitch, not just off it.

Strachan's record in League One is non existant, and I'm uncertain about how good he'll be at motivating players to the rubbish evening away games at poor grounds.

I think you are doing WGS a bit of an injustice there, his record with Celtic, despite what some Celtic fans think was good. now I am not an authority on Scottish football, but I would imagine it has it's fair share of rubbish games and poor grounds.

also, on that point, Strachan would be coming to us with a winning mentality.

Wee Gordon of course,at least his teams are fit and play with some passion.

Oh and the after match interviews, are entertaining in themselves.

I think a fit team is even more important in the lower leagues where mistakes are more common in the last 20 minutes.

amazing, so happy we can actually speculate like this!

It's so amazing that for the first time in years I smile when I think about Saints.

Please not WGS - he has (and did with us) signed some poor players, and was running out of ideas with us.

I don't think the new owner sound as if he is going to throw money around, so I think KK is unlikely, given his spending record.

I doubt we are going to behave like the Man City of League 1, so I reckon it will be a "solid" candidate - flamboyance isn't exactly a Swiss characteristic is it?

That's quite a frighteningly skewed view... especially "head says Keegan". As for trying to identify what it is that makes you feel Ferguson has an emotional long-standing love of Saints, I think you may have your head where your heart is and vice versa, you should get that looked at - and don't do any headers.

perhaps i shall enjoy thinking myself as frightening skewed for the rest of the day! obviously my heart wants the best possible manager for saints, my head however restricts thinking to realistic alternatives, and kk is one of these. i don't really get people that want a messianic return of some former demigod for some emotional reason seperate from their ability to manage. I'm interested in kk because of his previous record with newcastle and man city, not because he once played for us, or has a 'emotional long-standing love of Saints' which i'm sure he does not.

WGS, just for the chance to wear ginger wigs again.

I have kept my wig from the cup run and would be delighted to wear it again (hides the grey well) for WGS!

BTW - what have I missed about Klinsmann? Why are some people slating him?

Good question.Manager of Germany and Bayern Munich. Also on the short-list for jobs at England,Chelsea and Spurs.

KK would have me emitting copious amounts of sex wee.

WGS would leave me satisfied.

TA would have me denying i was a saints fan.

er...no.

Branfoot was first brought to Southmapton under McMenemy as the long term replacement. He was being groomed in the Saints style of play. For added experience they allowed him to join Coppell at Palace (89 I think). Branfoot was introduced to the long ball game by Coppell for the first time and thought it was brilliant. Despite it not being the Saints style of play, he tried to introduce it here when he was finally appointed manager (at the expense of MLT). The rest is history.

Whatever happened to Brantfoot's trademark booting the ball straight out of play from kick off tactic? Can't remember that being replicated too often in the last 15 years.
