Mark Wotte appreciation thread

Recommended Posts

Fair play to Wotte. He stuck by us when others would have walked. I don't rate him as a manager but I do feel sorry for him with regards to the way he's been treated. Having said that, he has had his contract paid up in full so that's not a bad consolation! He clearly didn't see this coming though and I wish him all the very best in the future.

I would just like to say thanks to Mark Wotte. He got alot of stick from fans last season but its my opinion is that ANY manager would've struggled to have kept that squad up. I thought they would give him this season at least to see what he can do with a bit of money to spend.

Being involved at AFC Totton, I had the privelege of a 10 minute chat with Mark after the game on tuesday and I thought he was a bloody nice fella. He was open and honest about the teams frailties and he knew exactly where the team needed strengthening. He was very complimentary about Saints as a club and was really looking forward to this season. Where does this leave poor old Michael Svennsen?

I'd just like to say thank you to Mark, as he has acted with honour and integrity through this whole debacle.

I personally wish you the best of luck

All the best Mark

I met Mark and his family in Tesco (Bursledon) a few weeks ago - very positive guy - doing the best in unreal circumstances - nice to talk to - wish him all the best (hopefully) in Egypt - standard of football out there is quite good - strong following - top teams on par with Saints - Barcalone played a friendly out their a few years back - few players Mido etc in premiership - my daughter studies in Cairo so go there quite a bit

Strengths:

- brought in Size (sp)

- showed some loyalty and dignity during adminstration period

Weaknesses:

- appointed by Lowe and showed this by criticising fans soon after he took over as manager (reminded me of Lowe's 'lunatic fringe' jibe)

- worked alongside Portvliet and couldn't or wouldn't persuade him to change hopeless team selections and tactics

- only 4 wins as manager and led us to relegation

Time for a clean break with the past and a totally new regime.

Thanks Mark, you seem a decent guy who tried hard. Best wishes.

This sort of thing doesn't make me proud to be a Saints fan. He stood by us when there was no certainty he would get paid and acted with dignity. While I admit to being excited at who we might get instead, the least we could have done would have been to offer Mark his old job back with the youngsters. Shabby, Mr Oldknow, shabby.

I agree. I think it was the right decision but after the dignity and loyalty he showed to the club through the last few months he deserved better. He obviously thought he had a job for the forthcoming season and the poor guy must be gutted.

If it is a clean sweep they want why is Mr Oldknow here?

Still, onwards and upwards. Here's hoping the new manager can take this club forward and help to bring back some sunshine!

I would like to echo those sentiments and I feel he acted throughout with great professionalism and dignity a trait that at times is severely lacking in football. I'm surprised by the decision in particular it's timing and would have liked him to prove that he is a good manager competing on a level playing.

Lets hope the new manager represents the clean break that the Mr Liebherr is keen to promote.

i dont see how we can praise Davis on his loyalty one minute, and celebrate getting rid of a guy like Wotte the next.

Loyalty should work both ways. I think he has been treated rather disgracefully.

I agree the timing especially is odd being given a year's contract a week ago when he had another job lined up and allowed to talk to the cameras this morning. Sack the man if that is what you want but don't publicly make him look a bit foolish - he didn't deserve that. Very ruthless and if it's to pave the way for a 'clean break' for Strachan then foolishly hasty as well IMO.

It's going to be an interesting few days and the treatment of Wotte has for the moment slighted tainted proceedings and hopefully they recruit better than they fire.

I would like to add my heartfelt thanks to Mr Wotte for his efforts, hardwork, dignity, professionalism and loyalty through what has been the most difficult of circumstances in the history of this great club.

To keep praising young players who were so obviously out of their depth, trying to inspire them to achieve the impossible when both of your hands have been tied behind your back by the ineptitude of the directors, is a position that none of us would envy.

I wish you every success in your next appointment, your loyalty will be an asset to any future employer and the fans will be able to see for themselves that you are indeed a man of honour.

My sincere best wishes and good luck.

Good luck Mark

You are a genuine guy and you always did what you thought was best for the club. You were just unlucky that with everything going on you were in a no win situation. You just didnt have the experience or talent to deal with a sinking ship at the nd of the day

CWD salutes you

As others have said - a decent, genuine, honest & hardworking guy. Unfortunately out of his league and events have eventually conspired against him.

Probably a shock that he got the bullet, but then again probably a shock that he managed to land the job in the first place.

I wish him well in whatever he does and thank him for his efforts.

Well said Micky.. He did his best in spite of the appalling circumstances that unfolded during his time here. Shame so many others weren't as committed in they're roles. Good luck Mark..!

I think a few people are getting a bit carried away with words like honour and integrity. All he has done is keep his mouth shut, which is what I'd expect. Personally I'd have been p*ssed off if he had done anything other than keep out of it.

I wish him all the best in the future, but I'm not surprised he wanted to stay. Even in L1 Saints are well above his managerial capabilities. Loyalty??? What, for sticking around when Real Madrid came after him. Let's not kid ourselves here, however he left Saints, he wasn't going to move on to better things. Thanks Mark, but no thanks.

I honestly don't think Wotte was the right man from the job. But neither did I think Poortvliet was either. As a Saints fan I supported them, even though I believed we needed someone the order of Nigel Pearson or much better. MW was the last member of the old Lowe appointment era, and for that reason alone he was probably on borrowed time. Out with the old and in with the new, as the saying goes. And although he could possibly have stayed on in some capacity, it has been done - he's gone. There's no good way to being sacked, but a new owner has absolutely no responsibility to keep on people when he thinks Saints can do a lot better.

Wotte has shown loyalty and for that he must be thanked. But Saints must move on, and upward.

People still banging on about his integrity, the bloke tried to leave when it suited him but stayed because he eyed the bigger prize, the managers job or a payout.

He's got his payout and we have cut at least one season of the time it will take us to get back to the prem.

Lets see where he gets another job and how well he does there. He was very average not what we need now.

Probably very true.

The only reason I think he should of stayed is because of continuity but if we get in loads of new players and get rid of loads too that is not valid

Not quite sure about cutting a year off our recovery time. It all depends on who we get in to replace him and what players we can bring in.

But good luck to Mr Wotte. I wish him well.

I am talking about our loyalty to him, not the other way around.

He isn't even being sacked for being a rubbish manager. he is being sacked in the close season because as we now have a bit of money we think he is beneath us. This level of arrogance is worrying.

Never given a proper chance - the team was already doomed when he was asked to manage it. It wasnt even a poisoned chalice, the coffin containing SFC was almost 6' under by the time he got involved.

He deserved better - good luck in the future.
