Son of Bob Posted 9 July, 2009 Posted 9 July, 2009 Whatever else happens in the coming weeks I feel it is absolutely imperative they focus heavily on fitness. We need to lose the noose around our neck which sees us throw away so many games in the last 15 minutes. When WGS was here we all know how he liked a fit squad and it's no coincidence we enjoyed our most successful period in recent history under his tenure. This coming season will be a tough, physically demanding one and we need to be fully prepared.
saints_is_the_south Posted 9 July, 2009 Posted 9 July, 2009 Agreed. Worryingly though when we started pre-season Wotte stated that they were getting straight into ball work so I'm not sure whether they have paid to much attention to the fitness side of things. Hope I'm wrong though.
eelpie Posted 9 July, 2009 Posted 9 July, 2009 This is a most important thread. Fitness and toughness is crucial if we are to survive our 10 points handicap. We have already conceded goals in the last few minutes against non-league opposition ffs! So what are your plans for this Mr Wotte! On this you will be judged!
Thedelldays Posted 9 July, 2009 Posted 9 July, 2009 have we ever started a season well and looked 'up for it'...?
benjii Posted 9 July, 2009 Posted 9 July, 2009 Interestingly, Graeme Murty, on Radio 5 last night, seemed impressed with our fitness levels.

Hope I'm wrong though. That's what happened last year. Important, but to no avail if we continue to fade towards the end of matches. Indeed last season players looked like they had only just got up at beginnings of some matches. So unprofessional.
Thedelldays Posted 9 July, 2009 Posted 9 July, 2009 another note.. maybe this is the reason why wotte has started pre-season early with the two games against eastleigh and totton being used as "fitness games"

Weston Super Saint Posted 9 July, 2009 Posted 9 July, 2009 It wouldn't have been so bad last season if we could have put away some of the hundreds of chances we had.

Blandford saint Posted 9 July, 2009 Posted 9 July, 2009 Too right, it is absolutely imperative. Under WGS we looked as fit as any team in the country and it made a huge difference to the players' confidence and our results. I know Matt Oakley said that he could hear the guy he was marking breathing heavily in the last 20 mins and knew that we were going to hold on for a win, because we were still going strong. It seems a long time ago.

Hope I'm wrong though. Please tell me you misheard him? Apparently Poortvliet never put any emphasis on fitness either, and players had to do work outs in their own time if they wanted to.

Apparently Poortvliet never put any emphasis on fitness either, and players had to do work outs in their own time if they wanted to. If this is true of Wotte as well I'd be very worried. Leaving some of the youngsters to look after their own fitness would be suicidal. Get 'em running through Scottish pete bogs with lead wellies or whatever it was WGS did pre-season. That would sort the men out from the boys!

Are these caused by numerous Peters having a crap in the same place?
