"It seems obvious to say - and they aren't alone in this - but they've been spending money they haven't got. "How can a club that has recently won the FA Cup be on the verge of bankruptcy? "Portsmouth are very similar to Derby as both have been in the Premier League recently. "But not having a new stadium has been a major problem for them. "The money it generates gives a club impetus to maintain a stay in the top division. Smith doesn't really get it does he. Fantastic supporters blah blah blah weren't complaining when splashing the cash. Asking how a recent FA Cup and near bankruptcy in such a short time, shows that football men really should stick to what happens on the pitch. But I do love the bit about a new stadium generating money. Smith might be looking at us and our increased gates, but there is no point in building a new stadium if you can't fill your existing one. Hopefully the bubble has burst and QPR will pile on the misery on Tuesday The form QPR are in at the mo I can see a nice little confidence bashing on the cards. I find it funny how so many football people think it's good how Pompey have got past their problems as they don't want to see a team go out of business and in the next breath talk about how strong a squad Pompey have that will be pushing for automatic promotion. It's like they condone them splashing cash they never had in order to beat them in the league. Football people ain't that bright are they? rallyboy Posted 7 November, 2010 Share Posted 7 November, 2010 that stadium design doesn't get any less mad with time. Apart from the compulsory purchase of £100M of harbour front property and £30M of naval dockyard, the re-siting of HMS Warrior, the Gosport Ferry pontoon, reclaiming a square mile of the sea, and an upgrade to the rail station and the building of an entirely new road system - the idea was great. Approx total cost - £750M? That's what makes it so funny, other clubs have dreams of a promotion or cup run, but not down the road - it's all Maradona, Eto, arabs with billions, the world cup coming to Portsmouth, the harbourfront superdome and the club being solvent and mid-table by Christmas - it's all pure fantasy. Will Pompey pay the University for the use of their facilities this month (or pay them 20p in the pound?), will the coaches be sacked next? We have consistently said here that you should have played your younger reserve team players instead of loaning them out and bringing in others you can't afford. Our team's approach has been to invest in youth and use them as well when the financial going got tough. Perhaps you might understand now why anybody approached now is going to be a bit cynical if not rude, and if it were a choice of recommending a player to a team Pompey are going to be last on the list. And the Rangers boss reckons Steve Cotterill has the best team in the Championship. The Fratton Park club went into administration last season under over £100m worth of debt and were hit with a transfer embargo. But they could still afford to bring in Premier League players Liam Lawrence and Dave Kitson on loan from Stoke. Championship leaders QPR are owned by billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore. And before tomorrow’s clash on the South Coast, Warnock said: “There’s been a lot of talk about Portsmouth being in administration but I think their starting XI is the best in the Championship, including Cardiff and ourselves. “Wages wise as well they are the most expensive in the league. Good luck to them if they can pay the wages. We looked at Kitson and people like Lawrence but we couldn’t afford them. “But I am going to get into that. Faz Posted 9 November, 2010 Share Posted 9 November, 2010 Sadly for true Pompey fans I don't think we're at the edn of this saga. Not even the beginning of the end. Perhaps the end of the beginning. With tax evasion charges still to be brought, and Stories admission that it was Daddy Gayboys money after all, and now this; there's plenty of mileage left yet. We know the administration was out of funds last month, so Chinnery must be funding them to the end of the season as their gate receipts can't cover outgoings. January will be interesting. tony13579 Posted 9 November, 2010 Share Posted 9 November, 2010 Hang on.... Ahmed al-Faraj dismissed claims that Ali al-Faraj was not making the decisions during his brief spell in charge at Portsmouth. Photograph: Phil Cole/Getty Images Ahmed al-Faraj, the brother of Ali al-Faraj, the former owner of Portsmouth, has said the Saudi-based businessman was in total control of the club during his tenure, which began in October and ended at the start of last month. Doubts have grown regarding the extent of Faraj's involvement with the financially stricken club and the degree of autonomy, as he never visited Portsmouth. There is a view on the south coast that a loosely connected group of businessmen, who knew each other from previous business dealings in Israel and which was led by Daniel Azougy, a convicted fraudster, were prominent in taking decisions during the period of Faraj's ownership. Ahmed al-Faraj represented his brother on the board and attended many games. He was asked by the Guardian if Ali was the owner and took the executive decisions. Speaking publicly for the first time Ahmed Faraj said: "So who signed the documents with the Premier League and all the things with the banks if he is not the owner? My brother was the owner from 4 October 2009." Pressed why Ali never visited the club, Ahmed said: "I think it is now finished. He is not owning the club any more so I don't think there is any interest in talking about the club or anything." When it was suggested that there is confusion regarding Ali's involvement with Portsmouth and the situation at the club Ahmed referred the Guardian to Mark Jacob, his brother's solicitor during the period. "The right person to talk to is Mark Jacob because Mark Jacob at this time had the power of attorney of Ali," he said. "And he's the one who's the representative of Ali." Jacob has since left Fuglers, the London-based legal firm, which acted for Ali. Asked what the precise involvement of his own involvement with Portsmouth was Ahmed said: "I don't have any involvement with the club. I'm like anyone who attended games." So Mark Jacob signed documents for a non existant person with the PL? Both he and Fulgers should be reported to the Law Society?
angelman Posted 9 November, 2010 Share Posted 9 November, 2010 From the Mirror article, I like Warnock's words.... Despite Portsmouth’s struggles Warnock claimed: “We couldn’t afford Dave Kitson and Liam Lawrence. Wages-wise their starting side is the league’s most expensive.” Speaks volumes, I think, about how others within the game view Pompey, although Warnock is one of the more outspoken people in a fairly closed shop.
