Pompey Takeover Saga

Dodgy penalty for tangle of legs tbf, and until then no tangible difference in success to whatever else it is they've been doing until now.

As for "fans demanding change of formation", well if it was anything other than the Mike Bassett Classic "fourfourfckingtwo" they could claim to all be tactical geniuses. But it's not. Hopefully soon they'll also start listening to every fan yelling "get it forward" and "put it out" too?

New role at Portsmouth for ex-Cheltenham Town boss

Mark Yates has been doing some scouting for League Two Portsmouth while he waits for an opportunity to return to management....

Interesting.....this can't be forward planning surely?

I hope it is as he is a close friend of very good friends of mine. I have met him a couple of times and is a really decent bloke

Tactical genius Paul Cook plans to arbitrarily shuffle his squad in the hope that the cards will fall out right, and a decent team will emerge.

He seems to take a similar random assembly approach to the English language: "So we will continue to tinker with it in the reality of it clicking into place."

Sounds like a 70's David Bowie lyric written on a bad day

Is this the fine that the gap toothiest were clubbing together to pay?

No, that was to pay the potential fine for fielding a weakened tram in the Football League Trophy (whatever its called now). Last time I looked they'd reached the grand heights of 3% of the target.

Talking of tinpot...

‏@solentsport

#Pompey boss Paul Cook has been handed a two-match touchline ban and fined £1,500 by FA following charge of misconduct in game v Morecambe.

Where will he sit? What with the stadium being packed to the rafters and all.

A lot of bitterness from the wrong end of the M27 tonight. They hate that we're playing at the San Siro and they didn't. Even their official Twitter was biting.

That's quite funny - you know the hurt is deep when even their official Twitter has bitten. Love it.

They appear to have forgotten that the football club that cheated their way to the FA Cup win doesn't exist any more...

To be fair, they're not saying they've won it. Because they haven't. They're just requesting he comes back in a few years.

Pompey working on new system: winning

Paul Cook’s vow to change has been followed up this week in training. But it remains to be seen whether Pompey win this afternoon at Exeter (3pm).

Blues boss Cook saw his side make hard work of collecting their first three-point haul of the season in last Saturday’s 2-0 win over Colchester at Fratton Park.

With the scoreline goalless at the hour mark, a change to winning proved the catalyst for a much-welcome victory.

But while Cook has pledged to shake things up on home soil to break down stubborn opponents, Pompey are more likely to engage in an open game on their travels.

He said: ‘For the first time in training, we are now working on being different. ‘The reality of it is that last weekend, when we won, we hadn’t done a lot of work on winning.

‘And this is what I must highlight to our supporters.

‘When you are changing stuff you must know what you are doing. ‘We don’t want to get involved in winning for the sake of it or to appease fans, or make out that “oh well, at least we are changing”.

‘We have got to work on our changes in a more pragmatic view that, when we do change, it is because we are trying to go and win the game.

‘And certainly at Fratton Park I believe we have start winning occasionally.

‘That’s in the last third, in their 18-yard box because that is where they are any way – so let’s cut to the chase.’

Key to Pompey’s hopes of a victory at St James Park today will be scoring.

Cook added: ‘We have to put teams under more pressure to get a goal.

‘We can’t relax – we have to win. ‘When we score we feel we're more likely to win and that is what we have to get to.'

Fingers crossed they don't get held up in any of the nightmare traffic on their journey to Exeter today ;)

The M5 Southbound is already filling up and slowing down and it's only half nine, wait til the caravans get down here from the North of England and it will be carnage! I can't imagine the A303 or A35 routes will be any less painful with the amount of traffic expected on the roads today :)

Forget the holidaymakers - I suspect most of the traffic congestion in that quarter of the country will be down to the mighty blue army making its plucky way to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Cook's battling troops as they proudly battle their way back through the divisions, one little rip at a time.

I'm sure with their groaning war chest the pluckiest will have been able to afford a flight to Exeter. Swanwick NATS will have been ordered to clear the skies so that the Barca of Portsea Island have a straight run and no doubt the emergency services will have been told to clear the roads around Exeter so that their limo from the airfield doesn't have to sit in traffic all afternoon

Yet another new adjective - henceforth, they are the bitterest:

"Leagues One and Two are not there for the convenience of the Premier League."

You have to respect pompey for making a stand on the import of foreign players, it comes on the back of their brave stance to only play English players when they were in the Premier League.

Perhaps had they stuck to only accepting English money as well they would.....well, they'd be a small note in a history book.

Erm, what exactly is meant to be the point of that article?

"Why isn’t there a rule for this competition which states only young English players can play? Or a limit on players who aren’t eligible to play for the English national side?"

Um, because there's never been a rule in any senior competition that prevents players of a certain age or nationality from playing, and also because it's completely against the *current* law for as long as we're still in the EU (and most likely after that as well if the football administrators want the club game in England to continue to be successful).

Now now, that was a completely different club, remember? One that won the FA Cup, and another different one which won the league and Cup in the 1930s or 1940s or whenever it was.

“The whole place has changed massively and in many ways it’s better than it was when we were in the Premier League.
