It's amazing now when encountering Portsmouth people through work or holiday or as last week at Goodwood races, so many of them don't really follow football! ! ! I am sure a few years ago that anyone you bumped into from there were "PTID". Just seems funny now they have no interest in their team?

On paper they've got the players to do it - but Ive got high hopes for Cook effing it up again.

I thought they'd do it last season to be fair.

 

Genuinely they are too big to be down there forever and quite frankly it's already a disgrace (for them) that they still haven't done it.

 

But we all dream of them completing half a decade in the bottom tier so come on Cooky, get some fry-ups down them.

Plymouth and Accrington should be up there. Clubs who get promoted from the Conference always get a bit of momentum so Cheltenham I reckon, plus Crewe are always a yo-yo club between Leagues 1 and 2, plus a surprise team (Newport perhaps? )

 

I am hopeful for more laughs along the way. They are the gift that keeps on giving.

It is a division devoid of quality - you look around at the other clubs and wonder how pompey have managed to stay there as long as they have while ******ing money down the drain.

Fair play to them.

For Cook to take the resources available to him and create the results he has, makes him quite special.

I bet on Newport to get relegated last season, they had a bloody good attempt at winning me the money, but managers 2 and 3 (at the start) did enough to get them to safety with about 8 games left, at which point they presumably told everyone they weren't getting a contract renewal, and they lost basically their last 8 matches aside from getting the one point they needed when it was getting really hairy again towards the end.

 

For some reason they don't look like a relegation candidate this season but if they finish top half I'll be stunned, even though they seem to have recruited fairly well.

 

As for the Skates, well, I said 3 years and they'd definitely be back in L1 so they're doing a stellar job of buggering that up beyond the realms of probability.

 

They should, again, be the best team in the division by some distance based on turnover, they probably won't be, and we can but hope they somehow arse it up again in a comical manner, but they surely can't muck it up AGAIN?

I can only say that they continue to amaze me every season. They are definitely very special.

 

I'm reminded that, at the start of last season I said it would be hilarious if they missed out on promotion and also pretty hard for them to do, however they managed to achieve this. I can only assume that they are going to do it this season however given their behaviour in the transfer market so far where they seem intent on replacing the entire squad (again) I'm willing to bet on them staying down again. And that makes me wonder - how long can they exist on the money that league two pays?

Let's look at the other contenders:

 

Plymouth: Should have gone up last year but a good manager for that level. They have lost Wylde and Nelson but have retained Carey who is by far the best midfielder at that level. Really ought to be top 3 and a club with similar resources to Pompey.

Luton: Will do better this year after a couple of seasons of moderate underachievement after coming up from the Conference. They get decent gates for that level in their antique of a stadium but have recruited very well this summer and think it's their year to push for the top 3 under a promising coach in Nathan Jones

Accrington: Should be there and thereabouts if the local investment in the team continues with new ownership and have a good catchment area for players

Carlisle: Improving under Keith Curle but recruitment can held back by their location, lovely though Cumbria is, to ex-Newcastle, Sunderland, Boro, Hartlepool and SPL. Curle seems to have good contacts though and top 7 for them.

Orient: Should have done better last year but owners seem to be taking some odd decisions.

Cambridge: Good outside bet, decent recruitment and Derry should get them well organised.

Cheltenham and Grimsby: Promoted sides tend to do well in L2 the next season (unless they are Barnet). Cheltenham have the experienced Gary Johnson in charge and would expect them to be top 7, perhaps better. Don't rule out Grimsby, decent size club for that level and should get strong gates on their return to the FL. Top 10, maybe top 7.

Colchester: Floundered in L1 but their owner has reversed the lack of investment and controversially brought in Moody for player recruitment so clearly prepared to match the bigger hitting clubs

Crewe: Seem to flit between L1 & L2

Blackpool: Who knows, but good size club for that level, although hard to see better than mid-table with their off-field turmoil.

Notts Co: Shouldn't be better than mid-table but recently taken over and quite a few new signings

 

So with Oxford and Bristol Rovers up, the skates really should do it this season but with their policy of signing L1 players before they get promoted from L2, don't bet the farm on it..

The odds on the Skates getting promoted are (always) rubbish, due to a combination of their numbers, general deluded optimism and probably some kind of relationship between high levels of betting and their fan demographic. They've been favourites for the past 4 years and haven't managed to live up to the billing yet. In short, the value is in laying against them.

You're paying more attention than me - but had Notts County not been taken over AND added "Newport and Oldham-saviour-cum-Judas" John Sheridan as manager, they'd have been my bet for relegation this year. As it is they're an outside bet for promotion.

 

I suspect Blackpool will finish in the bottom half unless Oyston actively plans to ruin them, too. Anyone else coming up and anyone coming down will be a contender for at least playoffs. I can see Crewe going back up, and Cambridge and Plymouth should be a contender from those sticking around too.

Italian clubs don't really "do" season tickets on any kind of scale though, they've always been very selective about the matches they attend, and most don't commit to STs. Just out of interest, the cheapest ones are only 205 Euros for the second tier behind the goal (though most are 350-550) - which underlines that it's a cultural thing, because that's pretty cheap... as a comparison, Luton's behind the goal alongside the away fans are £290 and £370 everywhere else.

I'd completely forgotten about Doncaster. I'll go for them to win it. Carlisle, Cambridge, Cheltenham, the Skates, Plymouth, Crewe, Wycombe, Luton, Colchester and Notts County for my promotion and play-off contenders (in no particular order). Actually that's more like a top half. :)

 

Newport look to have recruited better than Barnet, Morecambe and Crawley, and they've got a little bit of depth, so I'm sure they'll (we'll ;)) be happy enough with that. Not entirely convinced Accrington will maintain last season's form either.

Not sure about Jon Parkin. He's had as many clubs as hot dinners, and thats a lot. How you going to convince the rest of the team to run and work hard when you've just signed an unfit, overweight 34 year old lumbering oaf?

I think basically they've yet to accept that they're doomed to be a small time club in perpetuity and that their players would probably struggle to beat Saints U23s.

 

Corporate Ho, (I know you're reading): this is your level, no more Maradona, no more underwater casinos, no more potty-shaped megadromes; just honest slog against Fleetwood if you're lucky.

It will have been a sacrifice worth paying. How could their players be focused on the game when such an important protest, that will shape the future of football for all clubs, was taking place. I just hope the other clubs appreciate the brave sacrifice made by the 35 or so fans who went for a p1ss.

I'd forgotten about Doncaster - Fergie Jnr has been given a good budget for that level and they seem to be aiming for top 3. They were expecting top 6 in L1 last season so that went badly wrong including the familiar multiple changes of manager. Whether he'll get the tasty Man U loans with Mourinho in charge I don't know but they have to be amongst the favourites.

 

Can't see a promotion contender from the others but there's always a surprise package in the top 3 (last year it was Northampton) - Murray worked wonders at Mansfield but struggled to keep hold of key players, midtable along with your Newport. Exeter on fringes of playoffs again with a good youth system (I like the look of Ollie Watkins) but the fan ownership plus their decaying stadium means they are sadly always short of the 2-3 extra players to last the top 7 pace to the end. Morecambe are Carlisle on a smaller budget and smaller fanbase. As I say, Carlisle should feature and despite the floods had big cup games against the two Merseyside clubs with full houses so they have a good budget. Exeter used their Liverpool and Grimes money on infrastructure which is wise but need to sort their stadium. I think they should relocate but a lot of their fans want to stay at SJP in the city centre.

 

Wycombe are probably the other top 7 bet, some of the same issues as Exeter but another good manager for that level in Ainsworth. Not the most attractive side at times but Ainsworth has to set up as best he can for the budget.

 

Crawley will be interesting and the Port Vale of L2. Loads of new players, ex-Chelsea coach in charge, could be champions or 24th!
