Pompey Takeover Saga

A good few Portsmyths have resurfaced over on POL tonight :mcinnes:

Bloody brilliant.

I do like how their lot come out with "why do they care about us? Obsessed" all the time. Yet for 7-8 years you couldn't shut them up. Can't they get their head around them being our rivals? What sort of rivalry would it be if you didn't enjoy being superior? They only say it because they have nothing and think it'll shut us up. Meanwhile, I'll continue to wind them up and enjoy our superiority, no matter how far they sink.

Oh and I've heard the "I'd rather be in L2 with our history than be in the PL with theirs" so many times - how satisfying can reading a record book of achievements be when you weren't alive to enjoy it? Bizarre.

Personally I'd rather have something to look forward to that I might experience than enjoy the fact my great grandad saw us achieve something once.

Straw clutching at it's very finest.

They have no 'history'. That was all erased when the new club was formed.

Why do they care about their rivals a few divisions lower, says the man still celebrating his team's old victory over rivals who were two divisions lower!

Though it seems quite convenient to offload rivals if they become too superior and just adopt new more realistic ones like Aldershot and Eastleigh - is that how it works?

Knowing how good they are at figures, at what point is the rivalry null and void?

I recall from Ho and his learned friends that it was still very much alive and kicking when we were 50 places adrift, is the rivalry over when the gap gets to 80 league places?

I 4-1 think that it's a pity.

Rivalry tends to be about geography rather than maths, though I understand why a fanbase that still believes that it owns shares doesn't want to debate anything too complex.

But if as claimed they would rather be in the fourth tier with a year and a half of history that's cool.

They are finally where they belong, and everyone is happy.

They've got two draws and four losses from the last 6 games, 2 points of a possible 18. They are 5 points from the drop zone and every club beneath them, including the bottom two have better form than that. Is another relegation too greedy and too much to hope for?

Bless them. Deluded melts.

I could just about get a United fan saying they'd rather have their history than city's present position , but 20 odd championships 3 European cups is slightly different than 2 titles whilst the country was getting over the war. I was 39 before they finished above us, have only seen them do so about half a dozen times , and have seen us beat them moire times than they've beaten us.

A skate in his 50's has had years of misery , except for a period that bankrupt them, and is now watching Div 4 dross. Yet they still make ridiculous claims. Are Preston fans the same, or Bury? I can't believe they are.

Sadly I think the two teams who currently occupy the relegation spots will still be there at the end. Best we can hope for this season is Eastleigh getting promoted. I assume if that happens the police will make them play it at SMS?

They are very proud of their history - yet they fail to learn from even earlier history.

Take Icarus. He was given wings but told not to fly too high or too low. Too high towards the sun and the wax holding his wings together might melt, causing them to fall apart. Too low and he risked falling into the sea and not being able to get out of it.

He did fly too high (the Gaydamak years) and it did fall apart (administration), he then got caught up in the sea unable to get out of it (Championship, administration, League One, League Two). Maintaining something in-between would have been okay (the Mandaric years).

Icarus' greatest supporter, his father, lived in hope that he'd be able to get him back from the underworld, but alas it was not to be (you can figure that bit out for yourself).

I'm glad that Corp Ho and his pals are happier losing to Newport in the fourth tier than beating Man Utd at Old Trafford.

When the full time whistle went my first thought was quite simply - yes, this is a great victory but I'd much rather we'd have won the league in 1921 instead.

Are the skates still running a nearly 2000 page thread ridiculing how far we have fallen ?

Bet they're laughing their heads off now....

Gary Neville had it spot on this evening on Sky when he said that we wouldn't finish in the top 4 this season because our squad is lacking the character and work ethic that only comes from having to clear the training pitches of dog poo before every session.

If only we were more like Pompey.

The chasm is getting rather embarrassingly large now. But at least they did win the conference-league level first division, played in slow motion with baggy shorts and footballs that weighed more than bowling balls, Match of the Month was on Pathé News, and when their grandparents were in nappies and Laurel and Hardy were in their prime.

Just to compound your misery, here's some highlights from their game against United, last time they won the league.

(hint: the skates are playing in grey)

Woke up still with a grin on my face this morning, thinking nothing could make the day any better.

Then discovered that Neil Allen & the PR Manager of pcfc had been poached and unbeknown to us are now working providing News Material for a main stream 24 hour News Station in the US.

In fact, every press statement I read after this morning I will forever see the hastag appear

#foxnewsfacts

"This is a massive club" #foxnewsfacts

"The Tesco's project is going ahead" #foxnewsfacts

"We have the bestest fans in the World" #foxnewsfacts

etc etc etc.

Welcome to the first day of the new Epoch Nutjobs!

Hell it even applies to the interviews last night

Rooney "We deserved to win" #foxnewsfacts

LVG "They obviously came here for a draw" #foxnewsfacts

(WTF are you on about Phil? Get your coffee, get on Twitter, click that Trending Tag and spray your screens!)

I noticed this morning, that Marcus Bean , released for not being good enough, joined top of the table Wycombe, and scored on Saturday.

I get the feeling that their recruitment is a bit random and that they don't get the best out of their players. There are plenty of players in their squad who've won promotion from Div 2 or performed well in Div 1 who, as soon as they pull on a Pompey shirt, turn out to be not very good. If they do manage to get relegated this season it will be a hell of an achievement given the squad they've got and the wages they must be paying.

Dodd didn't score, it got given as a Matty Taylor OG FFS

Schemmel OG. For heading it onto the bar and the ball juddering between him and the woodwork before going in, even more ridiculous than the Mane/van Aanholt decision earlier this season.

I was thinking about this yesterday for some reason, possibly to do with statistical counting of goals and whether clubs are obliged to take the Prem's word for it or if they can just unilaterally credit it to Mane, for instance.

But there's no place for Prem talk on this thread, just let me catch up on the last 3 weeks' worth and I'll be here having a Newport County-based LOL.

Apparently they now have the best keeper in the division too, according to Mr Awford, so that's nice.

Straw.

Clutching.

Slow news day.

Distract from the league table.

And the lack of filed accounts.

Then again, perhaps Awford is confusing best with busiest?

They don't, Joe Day of Newport County (two clean sheets against Portsmouth this season, about the only player Newport have spent money on in 18 months) is a better candidate, for one.

I wonder if our very own The9 is at the match today? If so I'm sure we'll get an unbiaised and unvarnished account of the game.. :)

I was having a weekend off, as I'm going to Ipswich v Saints and Cambridge v Newport in the next 6 days, then Inter v Torino the week after.

Plus I didn't fancy having to travel up surrounded by Skates, and I knew County would win (they've now won 4 lost 1 in the 5 matches against Portsmouth since Newport got back in the League).

I know FIFA on PS4 isn't much to go on, but Bean was their best player on that when I was struggling to beat them with Saints (I'm not very good at FIFA, what with having a job and life and not living in my bedroom oozing sebum).

I was reliably informed by some people who went to Rodney Parade that Tubbs was gash. Though I do think they might actually go up next season (but not as much as they think they will). That's mainly because I think they've got a top-end League 1 / bottom end Championship set up and said they'd be back in L1 within 3 years, which means next season.

Frankly I'm MUCH more interested in Saints' Champions League bid and Newport County's attempt to keep up with Saints' league position as they both rose to third, which is automatic promotion in L2. :)

Apart from the "share" price. :D
the picture on your avatar brings back memories. Is it me or are the modern images of match action boring compared to such pictures? I recall the picture but cant remember what game it is from, was it a Bolton cup match??

Its Ron Davies scoring against Wolves 27/4/68. 1-1 draw. Heading in a "cross" from Sydenham, which in truth was a miss-hit shot. My favourite ever Ron goal.

I've just seen the goal that beat them on Saturday.

It did look unjust, the bloke was clearly in the eyeline of the keeper, it should have been disallowed.

Very unfair.

I feel quite bad for them.

It's okay, I've got over it now.

Swings and roundabouts and all that!

On the same programme it was also good to be treated to pompey legend Steve Claridge's strong opinions on rape convictions.

It was certainly one in the eye for those people who think he is just a thick journeyman, former strawberry picker and failed manager with a gambling addiction - it become clear very quickly that he is in fact an expert on all matters legal, specialising in sex offences and the complications of the resultant appeal process.

A great bit of punditry.

Next week Andy Townsend explains the relationship between UK house prices and the Scottish oil industry in the 1980s, in both economic and social terms.

That's what I like about this thread - where else in football forums (not POL for sure) do you get a good bit of Greek mythology?

Selectively quoted, but quoted nevertheless:

Andy Awford admits he has drawn a blank in his efforts to ship more unwanted players out of Fratton Park.

Awford is eager to offload more of his squad – and those available have been distributed to all clubs in leagues one and two.

But as Awford seeks to revamp his top-heavy squad, there has been an absence of enquiries for senior players.

‘I’m still looking to shift a few, but we’ve had no enquiries for any more as yet,’ said Awford.

‘There could be 50 clubs who feel Portsmouth might be interested in their players.

‘But so far none are interested in ours.’
