Pompey Takeover Saga

Do those pictures not remind you of a local darts club meeting. For the clubs chairman to look like that is pretty poor. The advert screen at the back has been hastily been put up,with no care at all, the Pay Up Pompey flag not even hanging correctly, and as for the Nissan hut/ church hall where they held the meeting!!!

From the Crawley Fans Forum:

When he game to Crawley I thought we had made a good choice but by mid-season the cracks started to appear and of late they became a canyon.

1 Never shows any passion just stands in his area with his arms folded with a blank expression.

2 Is not to slow at telling anyone who will listen that he is the highest qualified coach at his age in the football league.

3 If the team lose it is never down to him as he has to put up with inferior players because that is all Crawley can afford. What did get to the fans was on the radio after the game he would say that the reason players are playing for Crawley and not higher was because they make mistakes. Does not help team moral.

4 Cannot stand any criticism from the fans as he thinks he is the best thing since sliced bread. Had one fan banned for just saying “Shake it up Barker”. He never seemed to want to have any rap pore with the fans as he gave the impression that he thought he was above there level.

5 At the final whistle he is straight down the tunnel never thanks the fans home or away.

6 Always plays just one up front home and away who ever we were playing and sets the team up to not loose and never gambles for a win will take a draw every time.

7 Never seems to have a plan B and only makes substitutions around the 80 minute mark.

8 Does seem to have favourites who get picked week in week out even if they are playing below par also his signings have not set the world alight and most have a Bury connection and no better than what we have already.

9 Most of his loan signings just warm the bench so waste of time coming on loan.

10 Likes to play pretty football which resulted in us doing a lot of nice neat passes around the half way line which teams let us do because we never hurt them while we were doing that.

I cannot think of any more reasons at the moment why I am not sorry he has gone given more time I expect I could come up with some more. So good luck with him I think you are going to need it.

That Bradley incident has been the saddest advert for their club since they moved on from money-laundering, theft and prostitution, to match-fixing.

Two fellow professionals (sort of) run into each other, the lesser-known one asks for a photo and is chuffed enough to Tweet it.

Is that a crime?

Apparently so - he is vilified and abused by cross-eyed, toothless, sister-bothering heather-flogging simpletons, who on Saturday will sing the name of a man who scored goals for us, and who unlike all of his colleagues, has never put his name to their media template no.3 - the one that praises the bestest fans in world sport.

So having your picture taken with an England international makes you a disloyal **** who doesn't understand the rivalry, but cheering on the bloke who scored goals in red and white is okay.

They are dim.

Totally agree, I wouldn't have given a flying **** is Bialkowski, for example, post a picture of himself and David James back in our L1 days.

I'm a very late comer to this thread, but have had a quick skim through.

Having not lived in the area for some time, I don't even have much ill-feeling towards Pompey, but this thread is absolute gold.

A more vulgar, classless club, run by and represented by more vulgar, classless people you could not wish to meet. Each time I think this saga has run its course it always surprises me with another sorry twist. Of the few professionals to be caught up in match fixing so far, of course one of them had to be ex-Pompey. It just had to be.

You couldn't even do a film about their last 6 years, it would need to be a 20 part drama. I think it's got a long way to go too-100,000 posts in the near future?

http://www.crawleynews.co.uk/things-Portsmouth-fans-know-Richie-Barker-Steve/story-20298674-detail/story.html

1 - Richie Barker likes to get his team passing the ball, but, despite being a former striker, favours one up front.

2 - He likes to bring in young players and says improving talented youngsters is his favourite part of the job.

3 - Steve Coppell will be 7-1 for every managerial role that becomes available, get used to it.

4 - If you get the chance, listen to Coppell - he tells the *best* stories and charmed all the Reds fans at the club’s forum.

5 - The Fratton faithful should avoid shouting at their new manager to ‘sort it out’ - he doesn’t appreciate the advice.

6 - Barker is a Sheffield Wednesday fan, but has lived just outside Brighton since his spell playing for the Seagulls.

7 - Barker and Coppell got used to having a tight budget and so should feel right at home at Portsmouth.

8 - Barker likes the phrase ‘horses for courses’.

9 - Don’t expect early substitutions.

10 - It doesn’t matter if the sun is shining or it’s snowing, Barker will wear shorts on the touchline.

an important little gem from Solent...

Coppell will be involved in watching games, scouting, assisting the manager, advising the board, laying the foundation for a five year plan etc etc.

His role will be unpaid....INITIALLY.

Yes, he's not costing a penny, dining on roadkill squirrel and riding a bike to games - but only initially!

After the spin has died down about him working for free, he's going to be granted elbow room at the trough.

An email sent to only the bestest of the bestest from their new manager. Some of them thinking its a nice touch others think its tacky.

Dear Skate

It is a real privilege for me to be the new manager of Pompey. This club has an amazing history. Very few clubs have ever finished as Champions of England. Pompey are recent FA Cup winners and finalists, and there is no glass ceiling on this club in the long term.

The short term is very simple, we have to get back into the top half of the league. To do that we have to work hard and fight for every minute of every match, starting on Saturday against Newport County.

County are a good side, but with our fans behind us at Fratton Park creating that special atmosphere we fear no-one.

If you possibly can, please come down to Fratton Park on Saturday. We really appreciate your support and look forward to taking this club forward by working hard together.

Play Up Pompey,

Coppell will do plenty of scouting, I'm sure. He'll no doubt be keen to mine the rich seam of talent in the South of France, hoping to pick up another gem like star player Romain Gasmi. And if he's working for free, doubtless he'll get his expenses paid.

Dear Skate

It's not a privilege to manage Pompey, I just needed a job. The club has a history but I'm told that we are now fan owned and have nothing to do with the past. There is no glass ceiling on this club in the long term, though the glass floorboards are showing signs of cracking.

The short term is very simple. I've got to call Autoglass in the morning to fix the cracks with their special resin. I'm told that the budget will be altered to accomodate this. We'll then move on to our match against Newport County where we will fight and work hard despite being scared of you and your high expectations.

County are a good side, made even better by the fact that this will be their cup final.

If you possibly can, please come down to Fratton Park on Saturday. We don't really care about your support, we just need the money.

Hope he remembers to use the Portsea dollar exchange rate and multiplies his claim by 50, so when he eventually gets his 2p in the pound it'll still be what he was expecting.

Translation,

Dear Mug punter,

It is a real privilege for me to have the opportunity to ask you what the hell I am doing here.

I was at a close-knit, well-run club with realistic aims and ambitions until my old mucker Mark Catlin set up this job for me.

Obviously, I'm grateful to Mark who in no way whatsoever tapped me up and encouraged me to manufacture my departure from Crawley, to come here on the sort of salary I would never have dreamt I could pull in at any other club in the lower two tiers.

But having got here, I can see there is no glass ceiling on this club. Or any sort of weatherproof ceiling on most of the buildings.

Or any sort of walls at the training ground. Hold on a moment - "Mark, do we have a training ground?"

As you can see from the pictures from yesterday's press conference when my surprise appointment was announced to a shocked football world I look really enthralled by the prospect of being here, which is why I sat as far away from Mark on the table as I could.

Can you please turn up on Saturday, and for the rest of the season. My wages have got to be paid somehow, and those of my buddy Steve, when he eventually and reluctantly decides to take one.

Also, I'd like to bring in some ex-Bury players I had with me at Crawley, so if you can stump up the cash for that, it would be really good.

Otherwise, if I lose four games in a row, the fans who run the bestest fan-owned club in the world ever, might decide it's time to get somebody else in.

Yours in hope

Ronnie Barker

"Richie has had somebody watch us for the last four games for no other reason than he was always going to apply for the job".

That's an interesting quote from McInnes.....Guy Whittingham was only sacked three games ago so therefore RB was thinking about applying BEFORE Guy was sacked and BEFORE Crawley sacked him!! Hmmm that's interesting.

"Hmmmm" indeed...

I think it's almost a unique club in the Football League. I don't know how many football clubs would get 15,000 people on a Wednesday night in League Two, so I think its almost unique throughout the country really....it's a massive club. It's a lot of teams' cup finals coming to play here.

Well that brought a smile this morning. We are no mugs, awford chasing his arse up the motorway, 40years experience (I relived the peter storrie version) all terms used to explain why they are such a great board.

If anyone questions the professionalism and make up, down the road ..... Then watch the clip.

They are well on their way to taking things to a new level.

Oh and see if you can spot the potential issue of the sky bet logo during some waffle.

They couldn't have made that look any more amateur if they tried!

And it was all "Coppell this, Coppell that". It feels like they only employed Barker because Coppell came as part of the package. I almost feel sorry for Barker...

And then McInnes 'jokes': "We couldn't find anyone cheaper"... cue awkward grin from Barker. In fact, Barker had a "what the **** have I let myself in for?" look on his face throughout...

Time to get the popcorn warmed up again me thinks...

p.s. and  at McInnes criticising there being "too much betting in Football" with the SkyBet logo behind him :mcinnes:

I loved how McInnes started ranting about the problem of gambling and how they should clamp down on betting advertising - SAT IN FRONT OF SKYBET LOGOS!

I'm not sure that McInnes is 100% behind the Barker appointment. You don't need to be a body language expert to note that McInnes sat with his left arm behind Caitlin but with his right arm dividing the space between himself and Barker. He also made a couple of gags about Barker, one that he was a makeweight to get Coppell and one that he was the cheapest they could find. Many a true word.....

Fair to say people management might be an issue at the club. I think Barker could do quite well for them actually given some time and realistic expectations (I know) but the Coppell references can't be helping instill confidence and it all feels a bit Rix/Redknapp all over again. One of the jokes won't have gone down well, if the Crawley media's reporting of his time there is remotely true.

By the way, who the heck set up that press conference and venue? If one of our events teams at work had set it out like that, there'd be hell to pay. The stand looked like it might fall on them at any given moment and that England flag with a Pompey logo draped across the platform - tacky or is it just me being a snob?

Love this quote on the BBC page:

'Chairman Iain McInnes revealed the board had initially been split five-to-two on appointing Barker but eventually it was a unanimous decision that the club needed a "fresh face with new ideas". '

I didn't expect the infighting to start even before they'd appointed the new manager - now which 2 of the board needed to be reminded who really owns the club?

That sounds to me like the choice was between retaining GW or appointing RB.

But surely RB was still employed by Crawley at that point in time?

:?

Unless they were choosing between Barker and Awford (who wouldn't have been a fresh face)

So within 24 hours McInnes has:

Looked like a Santa Claus sacked for being ****ed

Called his new manager a 'makeweight'

Confirmed his 'new' manager was having people scout the team whilst he and GW were in Post

Called his new man 'cheap'

Confirmed that he wasn't everyone's first choice

I thought we struck gold with AA, SAF and Avram on this thread. This guy has taken it to a whole new level. He is starting to make Micah Hall look competent!

What the f$ck?

I've just seen the accounts, and I thought Crawley was a mess.

When's my signing on fee hitting the account? No seriously, where is it? A banking error, oh right.

And now I discover that Coppell is going to be on more than I am within a few months, what a joke.

Where's the training ground?

What?

Bloody hell.

How many are we expecting on Saturday?

No, not the away support, the attendance?

Oh.

Connolly shut it, I know you wanted the job, yes you will get a game - and why are you limping?

No I don't want to fill in a template, what do you mean you've already sent it out?

Why would I say that?

What a frigging joke.

Anyway, let me see the first team training when these reserves have finished.

What?

Sh1t.

And what is that running out of the taps?

regards

Richie

They've obviously just taken the flag out of the packet, judging by the creases in it.

Not entirely sure why it is displayed at a jaunty angle, either. Means you can't read what it says clearly.

2/10 for effort.
