StuRomseySaint Posted 26 January, 2010 Share Posted 26 January, 2010 Possibly because he really really wants to own a premiership club and pompey are the only ones desperate enough to accept him as an owner? Maybe, but Pompey are not going to be a Premiership club for long... then you have yet more costs.
Whitey Grandad Posted 26 January, 2010 Share Posted 26 January, 2010 Yes - but the tw*t who is buying is the same tw*t who has overseen the financial demise of his four previous clubs. Tottenham next for administration obviously And the same tw*t who bought him for Portsmouth for £4m in August 2008. Perhaps he is trying to do them a favour? stevegrant Posted 26 January, 2010 Share Posted 26 January, 2010 This is today's Guardian bit on Pompey: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/jan/25/portsmouth-transfer-embargo-sulley-muntari In brief, the club claim to have reached an agreement with Udinese; PL lawyers are looking at it to see if it means the embargo can finally be lifted. PFA rep met Pompey players yesterday to discuss the club's instability. PFC yet to decide whether to appeal against High Court ruling on the winding-up petition (I think today's the last day they can appeal, but I'm not totally sure of that). Mention of players they may try to get if the embargo goes. And that's about it, though there's a lot more detail in the full article. One name conspicuous by its absence is Gaddafi junior. I can't believe the Premier League would relax the embargo until the players have been paid on time. If there's another delay then all that does is confirm that they cannot afford the players they've currently got, let alone buy any new ones. I really cannot understand why the embargo would be lifted full stop. The players have not been paid on time 3 out of the last 4 months, clubs are not getting paid and creditors queueing up... why on earth would the Premier League allow Portsmouth to go and spend money on players when creditors are queuing up to be paid. It will be an absolute disgrace if they lift the embargo, and I am not just saying it because it is Portsmouth, but there are local businesses, SME's etc who are desperate for the money Pompey own them and in the meantime Pompey will be allowed to go and splash out cash on players? Having said that, I can't imagine any club in their right mind who would sell Pompey a player for anything other than 100% cash up front.

Suspect the PL are running scared of a legal challenge as possibly adding that sort of constraint is beyond their rules?

Absolutely. Bournemouth have 13 fit players for their next two games, and yet the FA are still refusing to allow them to sign anyone on loan, even if the parent club pays all the wages! It wasn't just Pompey paying their current creditors, they needed to prove they could meet future payments and that a long term funding source made them viable (or words to that effect). Sounds like this requirement has now been watered down significantly.

On transfer fronts I'd like to see all debts settled when you sell a player on. Bit like a car, no HP/outstanding charges can be in place when you sell. The fact that pompey still owe money for transfers where they've sold the player on sucks. But for 4m, sell for 12m but they still owe money for Muntari is all wrong. This particular 'Fratton Park source' told ESPN Soccernet: 'we have been talking with a new potential owner, in fact we have been talking to two or three interested parties, and one of them is interested enough to want a second round of talks, and we shall know soon enough whether they will make an offer.' Hinting that even if they scrape enough money together for this months wages and their overdue payments they would still have the embargo. It's only fair, Bournemouth have had the embargo all season despite being able to pay their players and debts.
sidthesquid Posted 26 January, 2010 Share Posted 26 January, 2010 Two questions for the clever people - one, have Poopey lodged an appeal against the winding up order (I believe they had seven days to do so) & two, how the feck can the PL consider lifting a transfer embargo against a club with a winding-up order against it that are quite likely to miss paying the wages on the due date again? (Fwiw, it still seems like cheating to me. Burnley & Wolves still playing with CCC players because that is all they can afford, Poopey using players on the top end of the Prem wage scale with no prospect of covering the cost. Also, it seems to me that all these foreign clubs like Udinese & Lens are basically being blackmailed into accepting deferred payments with the threat that if they demand what they are rightfully due now the club will go t1ts up immediately & they won't see a penny. What a thoroughly nasty little cheaters club it is...)

Saint_clark Posted 26 January, 2010 Share Posted 26 January, 2010 There will be a mass walkout of players starting next week, much like Weymouth last year. For those who don't know what happened, Weymouth had to field their youth players and ended up losing the next game 9-0. They then invited ANYONE to come to the stadium and have a trial. Here's hoping Pompey do the same.

How can any football club be allowed to buy players when they can't even afford to pay their staff, let alone creditors. I suppose the one good thing is that no football club in their right mind is going to sell a player to them for anything other than cash up front or a loan. The Premier League have f*cked this one up completely. If they don't pay the players and staff on time again on Friday, yet manage to rustle up some transfer fees then The FA and UEFA/FIFA need to have a long hard look at what the PL are up to.
