1-0 at the Dell in the 73-74 relegation season - Channon penalty. Shankly wasn't happy!

That was the game I was going to mention, Shankly called us "Ale House footballers. " Sore loser !!

Not sure if this one is mentioned but we beat Liverpool 1-0 in 1967, our 2nd season in Div 1.

Our team was :

Forsyth

Webb

Hollywood

Fisher

Gabriel

Walker

Paine

Chivers

Davies

Melia

Sydenham

Not a bad team at all, Chivers scored the only goal in his last season at Saints before leaving for Spurs. Luckily ( and I believe the reason he was allowed to leave) we had a certain young Michael Channon waiting in the wings ! Must have been 19 or 20 at the time but proved of course to be another gem introduced by Ted Bates. I hope he's looking down today and smiling smileyvault-biggrin.gif

Help me guys please: memorable Saints victories over Liverpool, home or away, dates and scores, or link to somewhere I can get the information.

Sorry to distract people from the great takeover day: daughter is marrying a scouser on Saturday and i need some ammo for my speech!

All the best for Saturday and make sure you remind him we are considerably richer than him.

One game even I'm too young to remember was a 2-1 win at Anfield in the League Cup in 1960, got a few photos of my Dad and a few uncles outside the ground with their Saints scarves around their necks. Liverpool were actually in Division 2 at the time and we beat them them twice in the league as well.

Slightly off the theme but following the LC win in Liverpool we than faced Leeds at the Dell. It was an amazing game, the floodlights failed delaying the game for about half an hour and soon after the game restarted Derek Reeves gave us the lead. Shortly afterwards there was another floodlight failure but not before Cliff Huxford took over from the injured Reynolds in goal ( NO subs in those days!). Match resumes, Reeves scores 3 more to make it 4-0 only for Leeds to pull it back to 4-4. Then with 30 secs left Reeves hit the winner, that was a game I'd wished I'd seen !!

3-2 at home early 80's. 2 nil down inside 10 minutes against Dalglish, McDermott, Kennedies, Johnstone etc, won 3-2 with goals including some sort of halfway line wonder lob from Nick Holmes (the decider if my hazy memory serves me correctly). Wallace took them apart as I recall.

If you need a story for your speech try this :

I arrived in the vicinity of Anfield for a Saints game in my new BMW and asked a copper

"where can I 'safely' park my car around here " His response was quick and sharp - "Southport" !!!

Was that because it was likely to be vandalised or some scally was likely to nick it !!

4 - 1 at the Dell and 1 - 0 at Anfield a week later - we had just been promoted to league 2.

Don't suppose it was the same copper, but a few years ago after being told my 10 yr old son wasn't allowed into the pub (The Arkle) and that we weren't allowed to stand with beer outside, we asked a copper if there were any pubs nearby with a Beer Garden. He paused for effect, then said I take it you ain't local then lads ... take a look around, even the houses don't have gardens around here :D

My fav 3 liverpool games have to be ;

1-0 at Anfield with Keegan playing for us and setting up a last minute winner for Moran

4-2 Valentines Day Massacre. Unfortunately I was in Leigh, Lancs and had to watch it in a pub that had quite a few lairy Scousers in, but Matts thunderstrike after about 25 secs had me jumping for joy and by the time the 3rd went in before HT I was going bonkers. a few scousers decided to come over and start giving me a bit of verbal, but luckily there were quite a few Mancs in there tha were cheering each goal as if it was a Man U goal and they took me under their wing. I think they enjoyed the match as much as I did :D

3-3 My last ever visit to The Dell. At 0-3 at HT I was a broken man, and feared my last memories would be of a terrible mauling, but the 2nd half was as exciting as any game I've ever seen, and another 2 or 3 mins I reckon we'd haave got a 4th. Equally enjoyable was being near the bench and giving grief to Pinnochio.. magic.

1-0 Anfield Nov 28 1981. Moran 89th minute put through by Keegan. I was on the Kop trying not to cheer, along with the now, Hampshire CC groundsman and a fellow poster from the Woolston area. :smt039

Best scouse comment. "That wasn't smash and grab. They never smashed".

That was a great one. Saints were an up and coming force and in the days when NOBODY beat Liverpool at their home. Anfield truly was inpregmable. This win made people sit up and take notice.
