MLT - What a Legend

Ambition can be interpreted in lots of different ways, including trying to keep a struggling smaller team in the top flight and score a shed load of specatcular goals from midfield along the way. Anyone who thinks that 'ambition' would have been a move to Tottenham or Chelsea in the 90s has an odd interpretation.

Matt was allowed to play football the way he wanted at Saints, something that might well not have happened had he moved.

If anything, previous England managers showed a lack of ambition in not picking him. Idiots to a man and the proof of their idiocy shows in the lack success that England had.

If there is a job that ML & MLT believe is right for MLT & Saints fantastic if not both are Legends

MLT = God saved us so many times deserves his place in folklore

ML = New King saved us from certain death

MLT will be at SMS against Millwall in 1 role or another

Spectator or maybe a guest of Crouch in those costly corporate boxes where fees are raised to offset the loss of offering us loyal season ticket holders a nice discount.

I disagree. MLT has sensibly and gracefully distanced himself while he still can. The Swiss may want him involved - I don't know - but they certainly don't need him.

He was a great and loyal player - but let's not forget that his fronting up the Pinnacle bid might have cost the club its existence. It calls into question his judgement.

Let's have a fresh start without all this MLT legend stuff - it belongs to the past.

Not being picky but don't legends come from the past anyway? - I mean to become a legend you must achieve something - so MLT is a legend because he achieved greatness over many many seasons in the past?? He is, and will always be a true legend at this club. I think one of the reasons cited by the new owner was our rich history so it won't be much of a fresh start if we start forgetting our past.

I don't see how Matt spending his career here can be interpreted as a lack of ambition. Let's not foget he was showing his mettle in the toughest League in the world (IMO) playing for Saints. He played the likes of Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal et. al. every week and there is no higher level than that. He was easily good enough to play for England. The fact that he only got 8 caps reflects far worse on Hoddle and Vennables' judgements than Matty's. Had he gone to Spurs, he wouldn't have been playing at any higher level. At Chelsea he'd have had to make do with the odd UEFA Cup campaign, back in the days when they were getting knocked out by Viking Stavanger.

It seems some people confuse ambition with the persuit of money. Sad IMO.

Sometimes loyalty can be confused with a lack of ambition and the need to increase your effort and responsibilities.

I am interested in how you think that MLT could have increased his effort and responsibilities in view of the fact that his goals almost single handedly kept us in the premiership for a number of years. I am not saying you are wrong but I would like more specific evidence as to why you are right.

Dont disagree but I feel England would have benefited in both 1996 and 1998 if MLT had been playing for a more prominent premier club.

It did not seem to matter to Terry Paine though

I am not remotely convinced that if he had played for another club that he would have been given the opportunity to show his talent like he could with us. Far too many managers of the time valued the ability to tear-arse around the pitch more than sublime skills. For my money he would have disappeared out of sight at another club

I was not talking about what he achieved here and he was IMO allowed to operate within his comfort zone. If he had moved to a bigger club my guess is his effort and responsibility to improve himself in other aspects of the game may have been necessary to make him a truly world class players instead of a great player who should have played more for England.

Let's not forget Matt himself has admitted that he would struggle to get a place in the academy these days and it wasn't like he stopped playing in the 80's. I recognise and am thankful for Matt's contribution but still believe he could have done more with his career if he had wanted to and IMO that is just a fair observation.

Yeah I agree bloody useless git scoring those 3 goals in the B international and Hoddle not picking him - he should of at least got 5 or 6 !
