Matthew Le God Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 (edited) http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/8139287.stm Lets have a last minute application please Mr/Mrs Liebherr MK Dons in League One have made a bid so lets show some ambition! First chance for Swiss owners to beat Portsmouth and the city to be on a world stage. Unlikely a World Cup will ever come to Southampton in any of our lifetimes if we don't go for it in 2018 so worth a fight for a bid imo. Edited 7 July, 2009 by Matthew Le God

bungle Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 The city makes the bid, not the club. Get on to Soton Tory Council if you are serious. The Lib Dems in P*mp*y clearly ahead of the game on this one.

bungle Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 Not really tbh, the FA approached us first The Council still has to make the bid though. Any way, am just pointing out that there is little point writing to SFC about this, it is the city that bids, not the club.

We were not as our Stadium was too small Edited 7 July, 2009 by John B
70's Mike Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 hopefully the new owners will not have this issue at the top of their priority list
Ewell Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 We were not ass our Stadium was too small Really, so how many of these city's have the 40k stadium that is required? Birmingham, Bristol, Derby, Hull, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Milton Keynes, Newcastle/Gateshead, Nottingham, Portsmouth, Sheffield and Sunderland.

They may be willing to extend or build a new Stadium.
Yeti Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 Portsmouth council is making the bid not the football club. Our council was approached but in their infinite wisdom turned it down... ie they are skint. The FA are desperate for a city on the south coast to be a host city as it is a FIFA requirement that the host cities are spread equally across the country and not just in one area. At least it's a good excuse for a tear up in P*mpey..,
aintforever Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 Portsmouth council is making the bid not the football club. Our council was approached but in their infinite wisdom turned it down... ie they are skint. If our new owners have a bit of cash then it would only take a phone call. It would be way easier and cheaper to extent SMS than it would be to build a stadium in portsmouth. Also Southampton is a bigger and better location.
teamsaint Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 who cares. cities/venues that hold world cup group games are soon forgotten. EG Who knows where the all time classic 1982 Italy/ Brazil game was played? not many I bet. Anyway, the stadium no longer exists !!
St.Jeweller Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 They may be willing to extend or build a new Stadium. we will easily be able to extend SMS now with the use of these super-duper cranes
Sheff Saint Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 Don't see why us and them can't host. Sheffield & Leeds; Derby, Nottingham AND LEICESTER; Sunderland & Newcastle - all as close together as Soton and Portsmuff.
Elias Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 Southampton could well be hosting a few Rugby World Cup games in 2015, if England's bid wins.

EG Who knows where the all time classic 1982 Italy/ Brazil game was played? not many I bet. Anyway, the stadium no longer exists !! La Sarria, former home of Espanyol, Barcelona's other team. Best football match I have ever seen. Never, ever tire of watching it.

It would be way easier and cheaper to extent SMS than it would be to build a stadium in portsmouth. Also Southampton is a bigger and better location. FIFA, like the IOC, love all the regeneration toss though, so a building a new stadium in Portsmuff fits the bill nicely for them. Pulling sh1tholes up by their bootlaces and all that...
Melbourne Saint Posted 8 July, 2009 Posted 8 July, 2009 Nothing to worry about. The cities hosting the 2018 World Cup will be on the other side of the world anyway:- Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, etc.
