stevegrant Posted 6 July, 2009 Posted 6 July, 2009 Just in case people haven't seen the announcement above (not sure if unread ones show up in bold or not)... -------------- The forum will be down for about 10 minutes or so at some stage this afternoon while a hardware upgrade is performed. Basically, we're putting more memory into the server and tweaking the config so that - hopefully - we'll be able to cope without any problems when the takeover news finally arrives. Obviously it's not an ideal time to be doing it, but we only broke the record number of users online last week, which caused the server a bit of a problem, so we're doing our best to make sure that won't happen again. If you have any questions, please PM an admin or moderator. Cheers The Admin Team ---------------- UPDATE: Server will be down again shortly for about 10 minutes - there was a problem with the memory that was added yesterday, so the engineers will be trying again today. Sorry for any inconvenience.
stevegrant Posted 6 July, 2009 Author Posted 6 July, 2009 Anyway, all done by the look of it, just waiting to hear back from the engineer at the data centre that they've done the config modifications as well.
spain saint Posted 6 July, 2009 Posted 6 July, 2009 This is my first chance to get on here today! So I didn't know there would be down time. So when i logged on and the site was down I thought the takeover had gone through and we were saved!!! I frantically trawled the internet for info. (even the ugly inside!:smt078) I have now been brought down to earth with a bump!! Damn you!!

Johnny Bognor Posted 6 July, 2009 Posted 6 July, 2009 Buggar!, I thought the big news had hit! Me too! Ended up searching all of the news sites in desperation to find out what was going on. Got back on to find out it was server maintenance.
gonzo Posted 6 July, 2009 Posted 6 July, 2009 Me too! Ended up searching all of the news sites in desperation to find out what was going on. Got back on to find out it was server maintenance. Lol! Glad it wasn't just me.......
chrisobee Posted 6 July, 2009 Posted 6 July, 2009 Me too! Ended up searching all of the news sites in desperation to find out what was going on. Got back on to find out it was server maintenance. Add me to that list, bl**dy stupid time to do server maintenance
Under Weststand Posted 6 July, 2009 Posted 6 July, 2009 Yes got me too spent ages looking for what had happened who had finally done the deed & taken us over. Thought the site had crashed :smt075only to find out its site maintenance. hope it doesn't crash when the deal is done LOL.
Saint Billy Posted 6 July, 2009 Posted 6 July, 2009 Me too! Ended up searching all of the news sites in desperation to find out what was going on. Got back on to find out it was server maintenance. I bet there were a bunch of us doing exactly the same thing and searching the same websites in desperation. Funny really!

Thought the site had crashed :smt075only to find out its site maintenance. hope it doesn't crash when the deal is done LOL. We rushed it through as soon as the hosts could do it for us so that (hopefully) it would be in place for when something does actually happen, as I would expect the number of visitors to go through the roof, and clearly we want the site to be able to cope with it. Are you ITK!? Not especially - I've heard the various bits and pieces from Solent and what's been in the Echo, but I have also heard that it might possibly be sewn up tomorrow; I'd take that with a pinch of salt at this stage, mind you.

Sorry for any inconvenience. Can you give us some idea of the actual time - I'd like to send a mate down the bookies as it is BOUND to be the moment the Press Conference starts
stevegrant Posted 7 July, 2009 Author Posted 7 July, 2009 Should be fairly soon, I've just given the engineer the go-ahead to do it asap.
stevegrant Posted 7 July, 2009 Author Posted 7 July, 2009 I think/hope that should be it - just waiting for a confirmation e-mail from the engineer...
stevegrant Posted 7 July, 2009 Author Posted 7 July, 2009 OK, the memory upgrade has been successful this time. We will need some tweaks to the database config at some point, but we'll probably put those on hold if it looks like it's going to clash with any announcement.
SaintRobbie Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 Question is - is it going to cope with the traffic of the next 24 hours?! How much memory you increasing it for Steve?
stevegrant Posted 7 July, 2009 Author Posted 7 July, 2009 Question is - is it going to cope with the traffic of the next 24 hours?! How much memory you increasing it for Steve? We've doubled what was there before, so I'm fairly confident it should be able to cope.
SaintRobbie Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 We've doubled what was there before, so I'm fairly confident it should be able to cope. Nice one. Is that a permanent increase or tempoary? Can you surge memory for key events? ... just interested.
stevegrant Posted 7 July, 2009 Author Posted 7 July, 2009 Nice one. Is that a permanent increase or tempoary? That's permanent.
SaintRobbie Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 That's permanent. That's value for money! What a top bunch of admin'ers you are!
Hatch Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 have the downtime at the same time as the 'press conference'
tpbury Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 We've doubled what was there before, so I'm fairly confident it should be able to cope. Come on, put your balls on the line and say 'I am confident it's going to cope!'
Whitey Grandad Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 Can't you just restrict access to fully paid-up members? It might help to fund the valuable service that the Forum provides.
Scummer Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 Just got very excited, as the site has slowed down so much that I thought the takeover must have happened.
nickfinks Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 Just got very excited, as the site has slowed down so much that I thought the takeover must have happened.[/quote yeah thats what i thought, now i am underwhelmed once more !!!
Scummer Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 Just got very excited, as the site has slowed down so much that I thought the takeover must have happened. Having said that, it's much better now and there are a similar number of people online. Are you still playing around with the settings?
Mole Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 Judging by how slow the forum is now i'd say it didn't work.
trousers Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 Judging by how slow the forum is now i'd say it didn't work. Indeed. Assume we kept the receipt?
mack rill Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 I think/hope that should be it - just waiting for a confirmation e-mail from the engineer... Hows about a free years subscription for the inconvenience, A Granty my boy:D
Scummer Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 Yeah it's knackered again. At 550 users, it works great. At 650 users, it comes to a standstill.
