Delmary Posted 5 July, 2009 Share Posted 5 July, 2009 His medical highlighted problems with his knee that was likely to cause a serious injury at some point, and the official recommendation was that we didn't sign him. Unfortunately, we were so desperate to sign a centre-back that we ignored that advice. We also paid three times more than other clubs felt he was worth. Coventry offered just £300k for him.A very poor bit of business.

Bucks Saint Posted 6 July, 2009 Share Posted 6 July, 2009 whether or not the purchase price was right, or his salary was too high, or we were insured last yeat against injuries or not, i would offer this: Thomas is a no nonsense, big, strong, get-stuck-in centre half. When he joined I thought he was excellent. I recall going to Bramall Lane when the Blades were chasing promotion and singing, with 1000 other Saints fans, "there's only one Wayne Thomas" for much of the match - because he was outstanding. Burley then started to play him at RB. He is not a full back and it showed by Burley kept playing him there because we were short of full backs of course. He did get the odd game back at CB, but during a season when we were shipping goals for fun, and Burley tried about 12 different combos at CB. When NP arrived, Thomas would not have been showing his best for a while (but who had?!) Ok he has picked up some bad injuries since then, but lets not crucify him based on what the Echo thinks. He would be a top CB in this league, assuming his fitness is ok now

labibs Posted 7 July, 2009 Share Posted 7 July, 2009 I think Thomas is a decent centre back and I agree he would be very good by league 1 standard. However, if he is on the reported 8k p/w, that would undoubtedly make him one of the higest paid players in the league (probably only behind the likes of Rasiak and Saga...). I don't think we can justify spending that amount of cash on a 'decent' centreback. You could prob get a decent prem youngster on loan for very small wages who could do the same job (Leicester had Jack Hobbs all last year). Obviously we may get to a situation where due to Burley's profligacy, no other club will pay his wages and we'll be forced to keep him for the year, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave on loan or even a free. Definitely another example of Burley's crazy spending coming back to haunt us.
the saint in winchester Posted 7 July, 2009 Share Posted 7 July, 2009 Can we have some full-backs too please? We've waited long enough, surely. I think we're ok on RB with Lloyd James, Sam Argent and Graeme Murty (if he signs up). For LB, maybe more exposed - Joseph Mills and .... (insert names) It appears from the team sheets from Saturday that Oscar Gobern (1H) and Ben Reeves (2H) played LB (assuming the 5th name is the LB). Yeah Ben Reeves was 2nd half left back, looked good there too.
