Bennett was offered a contract by Brentford who he was on loan at apparently

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Bennett_(Irish_footballer)

Great Trialist in Murty though.

Been saying for ages that we should go for Bennett since he's available on a free this summer, would be good in L1. If we could sign him & Murty then we'd have 4 decent options at CB with Perry & Thomas also there, Lancashire could then be shipped out on loan, don't think he is the answer never impressed when given a chance.

In an ideal world 2 players per position is needed for good competition for places & as long as the right players are there offers good strength in depth.

unless he's been injured it seems a bit of an insult to offer him a trial

I suspect we're stalling for time as we can't actually offer him a contract anyway.

Also he'll want to be in some sort of reasonable state fitness-wise for his testimonial on 21st July.

crikey, he has only been here 2 minutes.

Well they haven't bloody well offered ME a trial, and I've got World Net coming up.

AND I've scored at St Mary's more recently than any of our current strikers. :D

Damn, you have as well.

I laughed.

I couldn't believe it when I saw someone on the OS on the Michael Svensson Tribute comments suggesting he should have a testimonial either. Much as he's been loyal and done the right thing, we already paid him to be injured for nigh-on three years !

He HAS indeed been injured - long-term injury. We are right to take him on trial to assess his fitness. If he is fit, then he would be a great acquisition. Was Reading's club captain and until his injury, first choice RB. Unfortunately for him spent more time on the couch as a TV pundit on the second half of the season. However, would be good to have a choice at RB and may free up Lloyd James to play in midfield.

Turned my nose up at the Ode Thomson trial, but this one I'm smiling at.

Go Murty - new club captain!!!

It also just made me laugh to think that we're all getting excited because we've brought a 34-year-old Reading reject in on trial - talk about having been starved of any sort of positive news for ages

Twas quite funny, but if you think about it it's a good sign that we have accepted our place so quickly.

Not really the actions of a club going out of business...

Maybe Wotte's been told he's just keeping the seat warm for Steve Coppell to take over as manager once the Swiss/Austrian/Pinnacle/Whacko/Mystery/RodStewart consortium takes over.

So he thought he'd impress the new boss by going for Murthy.

Good Plan, Amshterdamm.

Why can't we be signing someone like Alan Bennett from Reading. He's available since the 25th of June on a FREE. Has nobody told Wotte about the guy. He started badly but became a hero afterwards. Would have stayed had Lowe not refused to pay him.

Well we don't want anyone that wasn't prepared to play for nothing do we? Bloody prima donna. We used t' live in shoe box in't middle of road....

From the BBC middle of the Murty article

...Former Saints utility player Jo Tessem is also due back at his former club for a trial next week.

The former Norway international played more than 100 games for Southampton during a six-year stint on the south coast.

why the hell is murty on trial?

experienced decent defender at higher level available to broke club. surely if he can pass a medical, he's by far good enough.

if he's right back it would be good to see james right midfield.

I suspect it's a case of "we'd like to sign you, but because we're in the middle of all this crap, we can't actually offer you a contract for a while - this may take days, it may take weeks - so if it's OK by you, we'll put you on 'trial' and pay your expenses"

Should the club be publicising these trialists as others can nip in and get them as we aren't in a position to offer anyone a contract yet?

Think about it Bourno, The guy probably lives near Reading which is only a couple of yards off the M3 at Basingstoke so he wouldn't have to unsettle his missus and kids if he played here. OK he could go to QPR but who wants all that London traffic hassle if he can drive up and down the M3 in the opposite direction to the rush hour. Footballers have ordinary needs like you and I, after all.

The only thing that is a joke is giving the lad a trial, I mean he's the ex-skipper of a Premier League side for goodness sake! He's got to be our new skipper from Day 1

I'm sure the only reason he is "on trial" is because there is no-one in the club who can offer him a proper contract at the moment. I'm just glad he's even considering playing for us, he could become the lynch-pin of our team and a potential Saints hero dragging us out of the dark times.

Here's hoping...

Would imagine he'd favour a move down here or to London, as according to wikipedia he has a radio show every Monday on Radio Berkshire...Radio Solent beckons??

Murty will be perfect.

Experienced.

A leader.

And Bright.

Ticks at least 3 boxes that 80% of the rest of the shower don't

And this probally why we will not sign him, why do we need any player who can offer us all those qualities now..WE NEEDED THEM LAST SEASON !!!!!

I hope we can grab him before another club snaps him up, make him skipper as well !!!

Murty will free up James to play his proper position, RM but will also provide the leadership the side (and the whole club) has sorely lacked in the last 2 awful seasons. His fitness does worry me but his attitude may rub off on those around him which would be very positive. Bennett would be better off coming here than Brentford who want him on a free.

Signing Graeme Murty would be a sign of intent, why does he even need a trial!? May be aging now but he has been a lynchpin of a quite decent set up until very recently.

James' "real position" is centre mid. Im not sure why people think he is a right midfielder. He has always played centre mid through the youth teams/reserves.

thought his crossing was best part of his game

we can't sign anyone at mo

Christ makes you realise how far our club has fallen

As the saying goes "we are where we are"!

Sadly, we have to eat some humble pie for a while, but Murty is just the sort of fella who can help us build a credible promotion push. Good signing if it comes off imo.

Two words ... Chris Makin! All well and good remembering how good he used to be for reading but injury prone last year, 35 and lacks pace.

Two more words - League One!

Probably to see that he is fit Wotte is not going to get in an older player who may well be carrying an injury but if not a good signing

Friend of the family met him at a family theme park, Murty's wife told them he is excited desperate to impress during his trial.

Spot on signing if it comes off - sort of player we've been missing out on in recent pre-seasons.

Looks like Wottes been doing his homework tbf.

Anyone know if he is still with us ?

He was on South Today - visiting the young girl in Hospital at reading who is tragically paralysed after falling from a tree.

He came over very well - seemed to have a great sense of community and seemed a strong character which is what we need from a captain
