Master Bates Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 Stern John has returned to training, despite a bad back, and wants to earn a new contract with Saints. Todays Echo.
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 I'd say Stern John could be a top quality striker in L1 - personally I rate him above Rasiak or Saganowski .
Saintjersey Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 I'd say Stern John could be a top quality striker in L1 - personally I rate him above Rasiak or Saganowski . He was a top quality striker in the Championship.
Plumstead_Saint Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 I'd say Stern John could be a top quality striker in L1 - personally I rate him above Rasiak or Saganowski . +1.
Pilchards Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 What a load of tosh. It should read Stern to show his peace until a better offer comes his way!
Saint Fan CaM Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 I've lost track with the squad now. If Rasiak and John are actually still at the club and in contract, it would be madness not to play them in a 4-4-2. None of the stupid diamond formation stuff - we'll get taken apart in L1.
Saint_clark Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 Hope it's true, but doubt it is. Why would he accept a much lower wage? He obviously enjoyed his time here, but not THAT much.
Master Bates Posted 3 July, 2009 Author Posted 3 July, 2009 Hope it's true, but doubt it is. Why would he accept a much lower wage? He obviously enjoyed his time here, but not THAT much. Wotte says Stern said he'd be happy to play for Saints in League 1, knowing he'll have to take a pay cut.
JonnyLove Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 me thinks his agent has said no one wants you. So he has decided to stay. Mind you I have no problem with that as he is a good striker and I will always love him for the last game of the season against SU.
Saint_clark Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 Wotte says Stern said he'd be happy to play for Saints in League 1, knowing he'll have to take a pay cut. Fair enough. As long as he's played up front in a 4-4-2 with proper wingers he will be awesome.
chocco boxo Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 Could be the man to fire us out of League 1 and back into the championship. Hero status awaits Stern.
oxfordshire_saint Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 He won't be able to seal a move anywhere unless he's fit and in shape, that's the only reason he's back in training
alpine_saint Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 Stern John has returned to training, despite a bad back, and wants to earn a new contract with Saints. Todays Echo. Wow. Immaculate timing..
Chez Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 didn't realise the laziest footballer in the history of the sport bothered with preseason. Mind you I notice he has turned up after the running has been completed. "I don't mind playing in League 1" reads like "No CCC side has signed me yet".
saint_stevo Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 He is fat a lazy, but will score goals. Happy enough for him to stay. Pair him up with Cureton or Bridges and wahoo
Saint_Jonny Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 I will be OVER THE MOON (actually over it, i will climb a ladder to that bad boy) if he stays for a season! Would be fantastic, would def get 20 goals I reckon'!

Mind you I notice he has turned up after the running has been completed. "I don't mind playing in League 1" reads like "No CCC side has signed me yet". If it wasn't for his goals the season before last we would of been in league one already and possibly looking at league two for this coming season.
alpine_saint Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 If it wasn't for his goals the season before last we would of been in league one already and possibly looking at league two for this coming season. Yep.
spank_182 Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 Stern! Legend, if we could keep him it'd be awesome. So what if he's a bit lazy, he scores goals, is strong and can hold up the ball which is more than half our five and a half foot youngsters can do.
labibs Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 Friend of mine is a Bristol City fan and he reckons he was very poor last year. He wasn't getting anywhere near their first team by the end of the season. I would definitely take him back, but only for a very low basic wage and the rest in incentives (goals, games, promotion etc). Certainly nothing even approaching the contract he had before. How old is he now, 33?

Nexstar Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 Really good news. Someone that is happy to play for us and would score a hatful of goals in league 1! Wotte seems to be already on the case for next season.
Arizona Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 I think John is just keeping his powder dry until a better offer comes in personally. I'd be happy for him to stay on reduced wages, but if it was a choice of keeping 1 of our current strikers, he'd be behind Rasiak on my wish list. I am a bit alarmed as to how he's gone from scoring 19 at Saints 2 years ago, to 2 goals at City last season. He always needed Saganowski to get a decent scoring return out of him, I can't see them both staying.
Bailey Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 I would suggest that Stern is willing to train with us and get himself fit in a bid to earn a better deal elsewhere, but if no other offers are forthcoming, then he will be 'happy' to sign a new, much reduced deal at Saints. If he did stay and was totally committed, then I'd be delighted. We could really do with his experience and he's a proven goalscorer at CCC level, so I'd like to think that he could get 20+ goals in League One.
eelpie Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 Stern John has returned to training, despite a bad back, and wants to earn a new contract with Saints. Todays Echo. That figures. But Saints retirement home for crocked players is in admin.
benjii Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 If terms can be agreed then this is fantastic news IMO. A player who has played at a higher level than this throughout the vast majority of their career but has plenty of English league experience. A physical presence. This is what we've been crying out for, isn't it?

We needed to offload last season, but there was no footballing strategy to the woeful season that bankrupted us anyway.
Leslie Charteris Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 Raziak or John? Perhaps they should have a pie eating contest (Organised by the World class catering, of course) to help us decide.
SaintDonkey Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 If John can get fit (and that might take a while after the best part of a year in Bristol's reserves) he would be perfect for League 1. Pair him with a hungry young striker to do the running around bit (White or Paterson?) and we could have a strike force to be reckoned with (in League One terms).

Pair him with a hungry young striker to do the running around bit (White or Paterson?) and we could have a strike force to be reckoned with (in League One terms). I do like your upbeat optimism and hope it is not badly misplaced. Sometimes Big Egos have to be tempered by realism and if Stern John, Gregor Rasiak or Marek Saganowski can get it into their heads that they are getting older, slower and less able and therefore accept that they will have to work very much harder, with more determination and skill and less money just to remain professional footballers in England then it can be only good news for Saints. I mean if nobody but nobody else wants you maybe it's time to wake up, put up and smell the coffee!
OfnPanad Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 First bit of good news for a while! Paterson & John up front would soon see us turn over this -10. Just need a buyer now! Is Stern rich?
VectisSaint Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 didn't realise the laziest footballer in the history of the sport bothered with preseason. Thought Rasiak was already back...
Wes Tender Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 I'd be delighted if John stayed here. When we loaned out all of our best firepower last season, he was the one that we should have kept and we might have remained in the Fizzy Pop had we done so. Although unlikely that we could keep him in the third division, I reckon that he'd score a hatful if he did.
Arizona Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 First bit of good news for a while! Paterson & John up front would soon see us turn over this -10. Just need a buyer now! Is Stern rich? From what little I saw of Paterson last season, I'd have said he was barely L1 standard at the moment. Even with more experienced and able players like Rasiak and BWP along side him, John struggled to find form. In the last 2 years, John has scored 8 goals in nearly 50 games when he wasn't playing along side Saganowski. Quite what it is about Saga's game in particular that gets the best out of John I am not sure. I know beggar, choosers etc. but the partnership you've mentioned really doesn't fill me with joy.

Beggars/choosers is right! It's what we got! For what it's worth I saw Paterson twice and I thought he looked confident and he can certainly finish. I was anticipating John holding the ball and teeing Paterson up, rather than going for golden boot himself. I don't reckon Saga will be around to partner John but of course he should take preference if he is!
St_Tel49 Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 On an affordable wage I would have him back like a shot!!
saintsdan Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 Hope it's true, but doubt it is. Why would he accept a much lower wage? He obviously enjoyed his time here, but not THAT much. Rumour has it that he was prepared to take a pay cut last year before being sent out on loan. The condition was that he wanted some guarantee that he would be playing (rather than warming the bench).
Block 5 Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 Great news. We know Stern can actually score goals as opposed to BWP & McG who promise so much and deliver fook all.
Cabrone Posted 3 July, 2009 Posted 3 July, 2009 If no-one else wants S.John and Rasiak (and assuming we have a club) then it would be madness not to play them up front this season. Fingers crossed for a goal fest.
