Greatest Saints Memory

Guided Missile

Recommended Posts

I dont think I have a single "greatest" memory.

I do remember going to the Dell, walking alongside Dad, chatting about what the afternoon would bring, and then we'd get alongside the County Ground, or the bowling club next to it, and Dad would be distracted by the activity on the other side of the wall, and for years I wished I was as tall as my Dad so I could see over the other side.

The distraction didnt last long, but soon we were talking about football once again.

I didnt realise then what my Dad had given up to take his oik of a son to the football. Beers in the pub and a late entrance into the ground had been replaced with a stroll down Northlands Road and getting to the turnstiles in time for opening, just so the little 'un could get down the front to see the football.

Dads and lads.

Pretty simple stuff really.

thanks Dad.

Yes, it was much the same with me, somehow my Dad always found the money to take me and watch Saints from the age of 10. Sadly he passed away last year but the memories are there forever. Thanks Dad, you were the best. I know Saints gave you some wonderful moments too.

My greatest ever moment was walking through the car park at the Dell with my dad and grandad about half an hour before the Steve Mills testimonial i think!

Anyway as we were getting to the turnstiles my dad spotted Kevin Keegan getting out of his car so he told me to run over and get his autograph. (i must have been about 8?) So i go and talk to him and get said autograph and I happen to be wearing my new red and white woolly hat my Nan knitted me specially for the occasion, complete with bobble I made myself! Well KK asked me if he could wear my hat for the game as it was a bit parky. I said No and he walked off laughing. Oh how i wish I had said yes!!!:)

Takes a while to get to Cardiff on the M3. ;)

For me, it would have to be those 3 goals in 6 minutes against Brum 3 years ago. They were top of the table at the time and were on top of the match until that point. I went nuts when the third went in. Just couldn't believe it.

Did much of the M3 exist then?

Do you mean 1976 or 2003 !?? I guess we travelled on the M3 for at least part of the way but truth to tell I cannot really remember that but I remember so much about the game and the days after (Bus through the city on Sunday, Micky Channon's testimonial on the Monday- great timing ) which is the main thing !!

My greatest memory is MLT's last goal at the Dell v Arsenal but unfortunately that memory lost a bit of its sparkle on Saturday morning just gone.

I agree that MLT has screwed up on this one but I do not believe for a single second that it was out of anything other than a genuine desire to help us. He has been guilty of an error of judgement - but nothing more. My view of him is unaltered.

Saints 4 Liverpool 1 during Nichol's 4-2-4 days when the scousers were European champs.

Le Tiss, Shearer, Rideout, Wallace n co murdered them.

Did Rideout play for Saints when Shearer was here. ? Doubt it !

Best memory:- TThe Semi-final, v Man U, at Villa Park, April 1963, (I think).

We were still Third Div' and lost 1-0, (David Sadler scored)

oh well i have had a great 48 years of support, been lots of strange places, travelled in lots of ways, spent thousands, met great people ,if this is the end it has been great.

Picking out one memory is impossible for me so i have select the period

Jan 1976 to 3Rd May 1976

8 games( Villa x2, Blackpool, WBA X 2, Bradford,Palace, United and QPR)

4 different modes of transport ( Car to Villa, Coach to WBA , Van to Bradford(taxi home) and Train to United)

The celebrations in Soho after the Semi and the all night ones in Above Bar after the Final.

Unless you lived through it you cannot really understand what it was like, the whole town, including the Echo, behind the club.

For sheer joy 2 things

Moran at Fratton in 84

Le Tiss against Arsenal at The Dell

Both were heart stopping moments

But he didnt **** either my wife or yours. He was trying to do good. His efforts may have been misplaced, but they were almost certainly well intentioned. Unless and until you can show he deliberately deceived us then MLT deserves continuing thanks, goodwill and the benefit of any doubt. Club historian isnt the same role as being investigator, prosecutor, judge, jury and hangman combined.

Of course he was weii-intentioned.

Of course he was trying to do good

but until he answers a few questions I reserve the right to be critical

1. Did he ever meet or even talk to Pinnacle's alleged backers?

2. Did he do any diligence on them before lending his name to their consortium?

3. What are the "other issues" he says the FL introduced (which they deny).

IMO Pinnacle never had any backers (if they did they departed long before exclusivity) and 5 precious weeks have been lost because of their "skulduggery". Matt's presence was the one reason we all gave them the benefit of doubt but he now has to answer some questions. Surely that is not too much to ask.

Incidentally I got a text from Lynam 36 hours ago insisting Pinnacle could still return to the table - this is the man Matt stil has faith in? Ye Gods!

I give up. If he ****ged your wife/boyfriend I presume you would still think that OK?

No wonder we are where we are.

Blimey Duncan, you do go to extemes don't you? Perhaps it is tough to go from a spat with a villian to a spat with a hero and be treated the same, but perhaps it is the way you approach people that hacks them off rather than the people themselves?

I expect MLT was as gutted as everyone and probably felt very foolish and let down. I don't know what you said to him or how you said it, but it was probably not what was needed at that point in time.

so many Saints memories - there was the day that Fialka drove his little Metro to the cashpoint for a tenner to pay back his mum and the machine took his card, that was poignant.

But it has to be Matt's final goal at The Dell - if you weren't emotional you weren't there.

Perfect football theatre.

Seeing Keegan for the first time at the Dell, travelling up to Wembley for the ZDS final in the back of a transit remains a fond memory, the very many MLT goals but mostly the last one already posted by many, the very first time at the Dell being laughed at by my oldest brother and his mates because I asked if it was live

All the really fantastic things we've done and yet still strangely cling to '84 as the pinnacle (sorry) and the crowning glory was watching Steve Moran unceremoniously shaft the skates from my viewpoint in the fartton End....magic, pure magic FFS

And likewise. My Dad managed to get two tickets for the game for us....in the home supporters seated stand lol! I sat on my hands the whole game with virtual duct tape over my mouth but couldn't contain myself when Moran scored (just after Biley hit our bar I think). Next thing I know is I'm the only one stood up and my old man grabs me and pulls me back down to my seat....we then made a swift exit.

We had a 10-match unbeaten run in 2002/3 that began with the 3-2 win against Arsenal and, including that game, featured three of my favourite Saints games ever, so it's more a memory of a lengthy period when we were playing extremely well. The 3-2 over Arsenal was made all the more enjoyable because it was so unexpected. Although we hadn't lost at home in the league that season, Arsenal were the defending champions and the first of the top sides to visit. We didn't have anyone below nine out of ten though and incredible performances from Niemi (including the astounding triple save from Viera) and Beattie hauled us over the line. I'd never felt prouder. About three weeks later we played Newcastle, and a superb match with both teams going absolutely hammer and tongs at each other ended in a totally fair 1-1. Just into the new year we had the famous 4-0 win over Spurs, one of the few occasions when it honestly looked like we were going to score almost every time we went forward. I've got plenty more but this run as a whole hasn't been mentioned yet and I always smile when I think about it.

Did much of the M3 exist then?

Possibly the geekiest link I've ever Googled :

http://www.cbrd.co.uk/motorway/m3/timeline.shtml

Construction Timeline

When the various parts of the M3 were built, listed in chronological order.

Open Jct Section

1971 J3-8 Ligh****er - Popham

1974 J1-3 Sunbury - Ligh****er

1985 J8-10 Popham - Bar End

1991 J12-14 Pitmore - Chilworth

1995 J10-12 Bar End - Pitmore

Thanks to the sweary filter for removing t - w -a - t from the middle of Light-water.

Timeline also reminds me of the massive annoyance factor of graduating the year before Twyford Down was completed.

Driving to Cardiff with my lad (6 at the time), with scarves & flags on the car, it was the first game he saw saints lose, and he was devastated, :smt022 mind you he’s seen plenty since.

Another great memory is when we demolished Coventry 8-2 at the Dell in 1980-something. Hatricks from Danny Wallace & Steve Moran plus a rare goal from my hero at the time, Frankie Worthington. Can’t remember who scored the other goal, can anyone help me out?

Having been fortunate enough to be at allthe recent Cup Finals from 76 onwards, and seen some great football, it seems strange to confess that my greatest Saints Memory is the promotion season in the late 70s. In particular the away win at Luton when I really thought for the first time we could get back.

Good times.

I thought you would have gone for 'Boro away 82. Amer out! Coffins, wreaths and mad celebrations on the slip road when Sports Report told us we were top of the league. Followed by Macclesfield's no.1 nite spot and the khazi with the sloping floor. :)

This message has blown me away in its stupidity - have another look at what you wrote (see below)

"a reason why fans should never know too much about there (sic) club"

Have a real think Jimmy, how much blind loyalty do you want to give, when will you say enough?

its a opinion so who are you to say its stupid. i have met mlt endless amounts of times and i base my opinion of people when i meet them not when someone on a fans forum tells me something that for all i care could be **** or not. i really believe that there should be none of this fan on the board buisness. the thread was on your greatest memory of saints and you couldnt resist the little dig about mlt at the end. its your opinion so maybe you should not act like you know everything sfc related all the time. its annoying in my opinion of course!

Still waiting for the takeover and end to administration to truly back this (!) but I suspect the day Barclays finally removed Lowe forever, wiped out the debt and allowed us to move forward as a football club again...

but still holding my breath on that one! :)

Do you think the presence of MLT influenced a trained accountant with fifteen years experience of administration and a process to follow? Or just a few fans who, frankly, know feck all about feck all when all is said and done.

And either way, put this somewhere else. This thread from GM, finally, is about our LIVES not about finance or retribution, but about the highs a provincial club has given to tens of thousands over the years.

FWIW, mine wasn't driving to the Cup Final in 76, but driving away in 2003 when 606 was flooded with calls from across this land and beyond. With people full of admiration not for our team, but for our FANS - we reminded the world what it means to live in hope.

Shame a few of us can't remember that a bit more often...

Did Rideout play for Saints when Shearer was here. ? Doubt it !

The goalscorers in the 4-1 win v Liverpool were Rideout, Le Tiss and Rod Wallace 2. It was 1989/90 and Jimmy Case was brilliant in midfield, was possibly player of the season though I'm not totally sure. Shearer made his debut in 1988 and played in the majority of the games in 1989/90 though only managed 3 goals but it is fair to say he was more of a target man providing the chances for others. 1990/91 was very similar for Shearer, 4 goals in 36 games but was named player of the season.

i remember being at anfield when the kop end was standing. i felt really ill that day and was taken to the first aid room for medical attention. i remember hearing a slight cheering noise and i thought to myself could it be that saints have scored. eventually me and my dad left the first aid room and we discovered paul rideout had just scored for us. i am pretty sure that game ended up 2-2. i left my scarf and proramme in the first aid room but the thoughful scousers returned them back to me in the post:) when we won 3-2 at anfield hurst x2 and ostenstad was a great feeling and also the 4-2 win at stamford bridge - beattie x2, marsden and pahars

My first game November 21st 1973 V Norwich, when I had to have the afternoon off school on a Wednesday for a 2.15 kick off. It was the days of the power cuts and they couldn't use the floodlights in the evenings . An interesting comment from George Readers' match notes on that day:

" It goes without saying. that the overall feeling here at the Dell is of complete optimism without compacency, and that with the tremendous team spirit on and off the park, it would seem appropriate to say, as befits our nautical city, " Hoist the mainsaill and set course towards a successful future"

Let's hope we can again say these words later today

Have a great day everyone !

I'm glad you mentioned this one because I thought I'd dreamt it. I bunked off school as well. The Dell was suprisingly full for a Wednesday afternoon as I remember. Was it the miners strike or the 3 day week or whatever? It's all a bit hazy now. Do you remember the score?

It was during a mid week win over Man U - probably the "end of Ron Atkinson" league cup hammering during the 80's

The united full back (can't remember who), backed up to the advertising hordings / fence to take a throw in and some mush lent over and pulled his shorts down from behind (prior to doing this he gave a thumbs up to the "up touchline" TV camera).

Classic

yep - we lost 2-0 , it was the league cup - " despite dominating , saints lose to a couple of smash and grab goals" - 14,415 - I remember being sat in the upper west stand

I watched the 2nd half from there, having escaped school at 3.00. My mates who went to the entire game were given saturday detentions and missed the next 2 home games and the ManUre away game in between.

The Norwich keeper, Kevin Keelan, had one of those games saving everything with anything.

Favourites and some bizarre memories include.............

Charlie George "showboating/dancing" in front of main west stand at the dell, during actual match

Saints v Coventry 5-5 crazy match

Shilton being booked before the match for marking the pitch

Saints fan running on the pitch to put a coat over the "injured" Mark Wright

Favourite moments:

Cardiff

Bucharest

MLTs last minute winner against the Gunners

4-3 last gasp winner against norwich in the relegation season

Favourite memory

November 1975 - mY 6th Birthday (yes I will be 40 this year) - my dad (an Essex born West Ham fan) was stationed in Andover with the RE. Took me and my brother to the Dell as Birthday treat - cant remember who we played (I could look it up in ITN, but FF probably knows in his head who we played at home in November '75 second half of the month ;-)) - cant even remember if we won, but I can remember the first experience of that atmosphere and I was hooked on the red and white..... and it just got better as the next summer (the scorching one of '76) I was glued to the box one sunny afternoon in May - 90 mins later I was in teh garden, - pair of blue shorts and a yellow T shirt as Stokes, knocking the ball past my hapless dad in in goal... ;-)

Rings a bell - and would be bloody typical... as my Brother became a Forest fan about that time - and 3 years later wins the title and Euopean glory - jammy get... I was still a bit young to know what was going on, just loved the day out and the red and white stripes looked cool 8-)

Getting up and rushing to school (I live in Australia) to get to the library first so I could log onto the net (it was all new and shiny back then, didnt have it at home) to see if we had survived on the final day of 1998-99. Remember it taking ages to load, and seeing that Pahars had scored twice for a 2-0 win over Everton.

I remember that game. I was working at the Ordnance Survey and we emptied the office. I seem to remember we hit the post about a thousand times and lost by 2 breakaway goals.
