Bailey Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 Can't blame him for leaving really. It got to the point where he needed to leave to further his career. He's a local lad and I know for a fact that it's been a tough decision for Drew to move on, but he had little choice in the end. The club needed the money, and if he wanted to take the next step in his career and push on, he had to be playing in the CCC at the very least. I hope he proves a lot of his doubters on here wrong, because IMO, he's a good, young talent and with the right coaching he could do well for himself. Some of the criticism AS is getting is so unjust it's unbelievable! Why some people are saying good riddance I'll never know. I'll tell you one thing, it will be a long time before we have a former England U21 international playing in our team again. Drew is a naturally gifted footballer and I think Saints are much worse off without him. I wish Drew all the best and every success at Wolves. Maybe one day he'll join us again and finish his career with us. Lets hope Saints are still around for that outcome to be a realistic possibility! dronskisaint Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 Another committed youngster with his best years ahead allowed to leave - I think it's a very sad day but I can't blame him for wanting Premiership Football however brief the sojourn. I can't blame the Administrators for trying to ensure the future of the club by selling...the whole mess goes far deeper as I think we all know. I thank him for his commitment, his loyalty & his service to us & wish him well for the future - I'd love to see him back in a Saints shirt one day. NickG Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 good player who did, unfortunately have a very poor season - so pretty good fee to get for him. Didn't like comment about having relegation on his CV! All accounts decent lad - and saints supporter - memory tarnished by those points thrown away with easy misses! He did indeed have a very poor season but in a very poor team that was poorly managed throughout it's not surprising. He'll come good again and probably the less physically robust Premier League will suit him more than the CCC.
sarum saint Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 I agree Drew carried a lot on his young shoulders over the last couple of years and I am sure he didn't make the decision to leave easily. Maybe not PL standard ( we shall see) but he has a fair chance of some games for Wolves. We better hope he does as more money = appearances based. Best of luck Drew and we may see you at St Ms again in the season after next. Yes I know I am an optomist!

Bailey Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 Just seen his interview on SSN about the ongoing problems at Southampton. He kept referring to Saints as 'we' and had to correct himself. Nice to see! He's still a Saint at heart and it's with deep regret that he's had to move on but it was inevitable. Both parties mutually agreed that the move was in the best interests of Surman and the club. I wish him all the very best in the future.

The players in it are faster, stronger, mentally tougher and more alert. That's why they are in it, apart from a select few who have exceptional levels of ability. True, they don't hoof it in the air the whole time but I can't think why anyone would expect Surman to do better against Jose Bosingwa than some nobody who plays for Blackpool. OldNick Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 Seems a decnt person and doesnt deserve the abuse. Ok we feel let down but he tried and cared, and we have a fee to pay wages. Only 22 and will get better, I myself doubt that his lack of pace will be a big problem but I do wish him well. unlike Crainie who went without a second thought. Ash Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 Why do people focus on a couple of bad misses as if that defines his time here? I will remember him for a decent start which fizzled out into abject awfulness. His shift at the Bristol Rovers cup game was the most appalling performance I have ever seen anyone in the red and white put in, and I've seen Adam Hammil. He will not put a shift in, constantly backs out of fifty fifty challenges and lacks the physical properties to see him thrive in any of the midfield positions (lack of pace for the wing, lack of strength for the middle). He might turn into a top notch player and pick up a few more international caps but only if he grows a pair of ********. Also, anyone who decides to leave, regardless of the clubs position, cannot be described as "saints through and through." I'm saints through and through and if I had mad skills I'd rather play for the Saints in league one for a pittance than earn 100k a week at Man Utd, I certainly wouldn't leave for Wolves. egreog Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 Overall too lightweight and regular underperformer.......he MAY come good elsewhere as most of Saints underperformers in the past few years have done at their new clubs........its called motivational management.......something sadly lacking at SMS since Strachan's days
saint lard Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 He was great...right up until he got an England U21 call up a couple of years ago....from there on in he has been mediocre at best. IMO.

Mr Sparky Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 I hope Drew shoves all the negative comments made right back where they came from. Good luck to him. I bet none of you fell off your bike whilst learning how to ride it eh ? Who is to say how Drew will develop, anyone would think half the posters on here were top class coaches or managers. callysaint76 Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 I reckon in a few years he will be comfortable at premier league level. He will benefit from having better and more intelligent players around him.
rooney Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 One of our better players but not enough pace for premiership and tires quickly in seconed half. Good luck in the future though.

Block 5 Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 Fair play to Drew, I don't blame him for going. Always had time to sign autographs for the kids after games. I think he has enough talent for the Premiership, however I doubt that Wolves are the right team to go to. They will come unstuck in the top flight and I predict they'll be straight back down. But maybe another team will pick him up once he has some more exposure. Good luck Drew.
L1Minus10 Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 Good player who had dips in form like any 22 year old. Trouble was that in the context of our joke of a team last year he was an experienced player so we needed him to be consistent over 46 games. I reckon he'll play quite a few games next year and good luck to him. You cannot blame a player for moving to a Prem side where he's got a decent shout of getting games, will be on much more money and the team he's leaving may go out of business and will be in League 1 next year at best. St_Tel49 Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 very dissapointed to see him go and only the fact that I knew he had to leave for both the club and his own career has lessoned the blow from the Bridge-like nightmare. I think I am more dissapointed at the reaction of the `supporters' on here than anything else. 22 year old Surman has given everything over the last few seasons and all people can point to is a miss against QPR. Ok so his form came and went but that happens with young players. Mark my words he will be replaced by a much much worse player and in 12 months time you will look back and yearn for the likes of Surman who have terrific first touches and the ability to play in tight spaces. +
Mr Saints Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 I have been critical of him for the last 18 months as he disappears when the going gets tough, HOWEVER.... He is Saints through and through and is the only player we've has since Bridge who loves the club in the same way we do. Good luck Andrew, will be strange seeing you in another club's shirt but hope you make the most of the opportunity. Thanks for the service. Window Cleaner Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 Another few weeks time bought, or another few quid off the asking price. No grat worry about this. Would be nice to think there's a sell on clause in the last couple of deals (DMG & Surman) but beggars can't be choosers just a few weeks? there is no reason why the club can't carry on as it now with the funds obtained from the 2 transfers and those still to be completed.Evidently Fry will have to get some football knowledge around him but I expect ST sales to be announced soon. Wotte will carry on and we now have to convince the FL but it's no great shakes.

S-Clarke Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 He's a good player - if he has good players around him - put him in our team of the last 2 seasons and he's understandably been average. He seemed to buckle under pressure a little as well... Good move for him though, not sure how regularly he'll play - but he'll do ok. i wish him all the best... Neil Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 In a word lightweight, always disappears when the going gets tough. Nice left foot and looks decent with good players around him with a lead and when the confidence is up. His misses in those three consecutive games, Derby, QPR and one other (Blackpool? bit harsh though that one although it was virtually a penalty) got us relegated. But a Bitterne lad so all the best son...
