1976_Child Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Are there any other cities/large town without a football club in the top four divisions? Trying to think of one, but can't.

Crab Lungs Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Aye, by some way, unless you count Wakefield... ...yes, it's a city. Ohhh, maybe not then... Thought Wakefield was a town?
Polaroid Saint Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Ohhh, maybe not then... Thought Wakefield was a town? Tis a city, the historic capital of the West Riding (Yorkshire) donchaknow!
Evo Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Poole. LOL How about London? One guy who I used to work with was adament that all the London clubs should be merged into one club . Strangely he was a Chelsea fan.
gonzo Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Durham Truro Salisbury Ely Canterbury Chester Gloucester Lancaster Lichfield Ripon Wells Salford York Cambridge I think that pretty much sums it up, other than the ones already mentioned.

Salford only misses out by about 100 meters but they do have a RL Superleague team. Whilst Gloucester has one of the best RU teams in the country.

krissyboy31 Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Very true, but we were talking of football of the spherical-ball variety! I know but we haven't got anything else to fall back on. PS Some Man City supporters I used to know always called United 'Salford'.
chrisobee Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Whatever happened to poor old York, I can remember us playing them in Div 2 in the mid 70's. Population must be around the 200,000 mark I would guess. Lovely city as well, I have photos taken in the oddly named street, Whip Ma Whop Ma Gate ! Ah, at least I have memories

Rocker268 Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Guildford, doesn't have one that I know of and there are probably loads of places of a similar size up and down the country that don't have a professional club
Panda Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 I don't think Guildford is classed as a city? Guildford has a Cathedral so that makes it a city doesn't it? Add Chelmsford to the list ...
merrimd Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Isn't Palace technically in Croydon? Technically Selhurst I guess. Lewes is a city now.
lee_saint Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Bath Canterbury Chichester Durham Gloucester Lancaster Lichfield City of London (I assume thats the square mile) Chester Ely Ripton Salford Salisbury St Albans Truro Wakefield Wells Westminster Winchester Worcester York Bangor St Davids Newport

St Chalet Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Guildford has a Cathedral so that makes it a city doesn't it? Add Chelmsford to the list ... Urban myth. Reading is a town and has a cathedral. I believe city status is awarded by Act of Parliament / Royal Perogative.
krissyboy31 Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Guildford has a Cathedral so that makes it a city doesn't it? Add Chelmsford to the list ... Neither of them are cities, both have Borough Councils.

Reading is a town and has a cathedral. I believe city status is awarded by Act of Parliament / Royal Perogative. Ah! But Guildford IS a city - that's why their football team is called Guildford City... ...although looking at their website it could be Saints next season!! http://www.guildfordcityfc.co.uk/
chrisobee Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Guildford has a Cathedral so that makes it a city doesn't it? Add Chelmsford to the list ... Guildford is the county town of Surrey and not a city and Chelmsford the county town of Essex, also not a city. Though to be honest "city" status isn't to me the me the real issue but the size of somewhere be it town or city is. For example St Albans is a city and a lovely one at that but with a population of only about 65,000 does not even match Watford ( a town) with a population of about 80,000.
Fowllyd Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Urban myth. Reading is a town and has a cathedral. I believe city status is awarded by Act of Parliament / Royal Perogative. You're probably right about the urban myth bit (Guildford has a Borough Council, so it isn't a city). But I don't think Reading has a cathedral. It has an abbey, and a prison where Oscar Wilde was once incarcerated, but no cathedral that I know of.

Many years ago I was told a city needed a Cathedral and I think that was the case way back. Now it is recognised that the status of city in England and Wales is no longer bound to the presence of a cathedral, and city status granted on a variety of criteria, including population size which presumably applies to many places including Southampton.
Smirking_Saint Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Portsmiff Well it ain't a professional club. Lol at this being the second reply post, thought it would get a bit further

krissyboy31 Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Guildford is a city but Chelmsford isn't despite its team being called Chelmsford City Nowhere on here does it mention city! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guildford

Horley CTFC Saint Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Nowhere on here does it mention city! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guildford In retrospect I agree and for the record I also maintain that Chelmsford is a town

The9 Posted 1 July, 2009 Posted 1 July, 2009 Nowhere on here does it mention city! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guildford Here's a clue : http://www.guildfordcityfc.co.uk/ And here's the thing about how you become a city. Nothing to do with Cathedrals, all to do with "letters patent". My home "town" became a City in 2002... http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_status_in_the_United_Kingdom
The9 Posted 1 July, 2009 Posted 1 July, 2009 Wells has a population of 10,000 so no surprise it does not have a professional team ! Funnily enough one of my housemates from uni's dad used to run the Wells City FC team - their ground was the equivalent to a run-down version of Romsey's ground (and about 30 yards from his house).
The9 Posted 1 July, 2009 Posted 1 July, 2009 Wells has a population of 10,000 so no surprise it does not have a professional team ! The population of St Davids is 1,797 (2001 census). I was interested to discover that it wasn't actually a City from the 18th century until 1994, despite endless quiz questions in the 1980s arguing to the contrary.
