Legod Third Coming Posted 30 June, 2009 Share Posted 30 June, 2009 It would probably break some FL rule to have a commercial named team. They are more than welcome to call SMS the 'Red Bull Stadium' Total Network Solutions, Bayer Leverkeusen, Vauxhall Motors... bloody hell even Arsenal are named after a team of workers from the Woolwich Arsenal... Are the league now banning their own history?

benjii Posted 30 June, 2009 Share Posted 30 June, 2009 As long as it has "Southampton" in the name and isn't ridiculous (eg "Southampton LadyBoys", "Southampton Mincers" etc), they could call us whatever they want as far as I'm concerned. I suspect this is complete and utter guff in any case.

Are the league now banning their own history? PSV Einhoven are another one. And the league are not only banning their own history they are slapping it with a restraining order! - pointless rebranding name changes, overt sponsorship, letting clubs move and rename, shafting 'historic clubs' with petulant points deductions, pandering to television schedules, favouritism to currently succesful clubs, the list goes on... The9 Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 I think someone came up with Red Bull in another thread thinking they might have been the Swiss Pharmaceuticals company muted to be interested because of their existing link with a few clubs. Someone pointed out that Red Bull were in Fact Austrian and not Swiss. I wouldn't be surprised if it spawned from there... It did.

The9 Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 (edited) Total Network Solutions had to rename after the Welsh League outlawed commercial naming. They came up with another TNS The New Saints. This is totally untrue, but good theory. Total Network Solutions ceased to exist when BT bought the Total Network Solutions company and no longer wanted to sponsor the football team which had its name. The club didn't want to go back to their old name of Llansantffraid - presumably because they'd pretty much never won anything under that name, so they renamed themselves The New Saints, still to be known as TNS - the "santt" bit is Saint in Welsh, not that I know any Welsh, of course... [-o Oh, and for a League which "banned commercial naming" they strangely seem to have teams called "Gap Connah's Quay", "NEWI/Elements Cefn Druids" "Airbus UK" and "Technogroup Welshpool FC" under their umbrella. Nice research. Edited 1 July, 2009 by The9

theyin Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 Is it really so far fetched that RB could be interested? The company's wealth is comparable to the wealthiest of owners already out there, in fact smashes most of their bank balances and a lot more than Disney I suspect. At this moment in time, changing the name to whichever format they choose is preferable to SFC going out of business....fact. Think about it, why wouldn't RB be interested in building up a club to compete in the 'best' league in the world?

Fergie Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 Personally right now i'd take this for sure. Yeah if they changed the name of the team it would suck for sure but i dont think your allowed to just change the name of a team...otherwise we could have been called "Southampton flybe" and all sponsors would be changing their names of their teams! Like Chelsea would be called "Russian oil Chelsea"!! I think if this is true, which i doubt very much, then it would be awesome. Surely the players know what is going on and i cannot see Andrew Surman leaving if asuch a massive company was taking over!!!

David Strover Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 If we have a club to support next season they can be called Southampton C*ck-Knockers as far as I am concerned.
