mdearlove Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Can anyone recommend a pub/restaurant in the New Forest to take the Mother in Law for lunch? Nothing too fancy - a pub with excellent food would be great.
saint_stevo Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 There is a pub in Canada just off the A36 which is very nice, forget the name The Alice Lyle over Fordingbridge way is decent too
J Bizzle Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 There is a pub in Canada just off the A36 which is very nice, forget the name The Alice Lyle over Fordingbridge way is decent too Rockingham Arms. Don't go there!!!! Living in the area, one of/if not the best I can think of is the Lamb in Nomansland.
J Bizzle Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Les Mirabelles(spl) is a good restaurante next door as well.
Give it to Ron Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 I will second The Lamb at Nomansland. I also like The Malthouse at Michelmersh..great carvery for £7.95 at weekends £5.95 during the week. Good beer too.
hamster Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 For good hearty English nosh I like thepub in Lyndhurst right by the two post boxes, can't think of the name. Try the wild boar Mmmmm.

Block 18 Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 The two in Ashurst are both decent, the Happy Cheese and the forest home.

Jillyanne Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Rockingham Arms. Don't go there!!!! Living in the area, one of/if not the best I can think of is the Lamb in Nomansland. + 1.
Jillyanne Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Also The Woolpack in Sopley, however it suffered a fire in 2006 and I have not been back since.
Ash Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 Me and the Mrs ate at the Turfcutters Arms last year when we had a week in the New forest and it was head and shoulders above the other places we tried, it was cracking food and good service.
Mr_Red Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 The Woolpack in Sopley is pretty local to me. 1. I wouldn't consider it in the New Forest 2. Its not very good and overpriced 3. The Three Tuns in Bransgore is meant to be good, I used to think the High Corner was nice but I haven't been in years.
The Majestic Channon Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 The Woolpack in Sopley is pretty local to me. 1. I wouldn't consider it in the New Forest 2. Its not very good and overpriced 3. The Three Tuns in Bransgore is meant to be good, I used to think the High Corner was nice but I haven't been in years. Being ex bransdgore i can say the tuns is too expensive , the crown is cheaper but not so good food, the best bet is a sunday lunch at the carpenters arms, 8 quid including a pudding , very nice.
Saint_Ash Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 The Oak at Bank is nice but the one we've been going to lately is the New Forest Inn in Emery Down. Lovely food and excellent pub!
Marsdinho Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 The Oak at Bank is nice but the one we've been going to lately is the New Forest Inn in Emery Down. Lovely food and excellent pub! Mole Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 This isn't in the New Forest, but i'd recommend it for a sunny days lunch. http://www.themayfly.co.uk/ Lovely setting and you can look at the trout swimming while you eat your food.

liquidsnake Posted 30 June, 2009 Posted 30 June, 2009 http://www.whitleyridge.com/index.aspx# Truly outstanding place, and with the set lunches you can get (£15 - £20 for three courses, as opposed to their £60 tasting menu or whatever) it's amazing value for the quality you get.
saint_stevo Posted 1 July, 2009 Posted 1 July, 2009 Les Mirabelles(spl) is a good restaurante next door as well. Bloody love that place. Not exactly cheap mind....
Katalinic Posted 1 July, 2009 Posted 1 July, 2009 Bloody love that place. Not exactly cheap mind.... Great cheese board - normally 20+ to choose from.
mdearlove Posted 1 July, 2009 Author Posted 1 July, 2009 Thanks all for your suggestions - We are going to try th eLamb Inn in Nomansland. Will let you know our opinions next week. Some of the others look and sound very nice so will keep all the suggestions and work my way around them!
saints_is_the_south Posted 1 July, 2009 Posted 1 July, 2009 +1 on both the pubs in Ashurst. Turfcutters is also a good one. The Mill at Gordleton in Hordle is meant to be really good, never been though. The Walhampton Arms just outside Lymington on the road to Beaulieu is very nice too.
OldNick Posted 1 July, 2009 Posted 1 July, 2009 Great cheese board - normally 20+ to choose from. until you ask for an english cheese and then Claude goes off on one. The last time we went in there the waitress was miserable and only smiled and tried to be friendly when she brought the bill across hoping for a tip.Try the Chanteclerc in cadnam for a restaurant meal.
OldNick Posted 1 July, 2009 Posted 1 July, 2009 Silks in Romsey has improved big time and there is a very good chef there. i dont think they let riff raff like StuRomsey saint in there.
hamster Posted 1 July, 2009 Posted 1 July, 2009 Went to The Ship on Lymington Quay today. Very nice staff wise really lovely food. 5 *s from us. There are some really nice routes to Lymington too not least the Beaulieu route from Marchwood, you can stop and enjoy the ponies on the way. Even take a boat trip and buy some crabs straight from the quay if you want to make it rally special (is she from outside the area?). It was a lovely afternoon, a lovely meal and they sell Timothy Taylor ale (Madonna's favourite tipple).
OldNick Posted 2 July, 2009 Posted 2 July, 2009 you can stop and enjoy the ponies on the way. Im glad you are in Phils team, pervert
warsash saint Posted 2 July, 2009 Posted 2 July, 2009 My fav is the The Alice Lisle which is north of Ringwood. Great food & great beer garden with views over the lake.
mdearlove Posted 6 July, 2009 Author Posted 6 July, 2009 Had a very nice meal at the Lamb Inn on Saturday. Luckily the rain stopped as soon as we got there so managed to have a nice walk in the forest too. Landlord is a bit gruff but food and beer are very good. Thanks for the suggestions - will try some of the others another time.
Channon's Sideburns Posted 6 July, 2009 Posted 6 July, 2009 For good hearty English nosh I like thepub in Lyndhurst right by the two post boxes, can't think of the name. Try the wild boar Mmmmm. Fox and Hounds... Also...Red Lion in Boldre, Fleur de Lys in Pilley (oldest pub in the forest), and Turfcutters Arms in East Boldre...or Mayflower in Lymington if she likes boats.....
Deanovski Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 The hobler inbetween brockenhurst and lymington is really good.
WestSaint Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 The Mill at Gordleton is a good one so is the Cloud hotel at Brockenhurst
Dicko Posted 7 July, 2009 Posted 7 July, 2009 I notice a few suggestions for the 'Fox & Hounds' Lyndhurst Did anyone frequent this place in the 90's? Brilliant landlord called Tom, died suddenly at 48 on Friday http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/4477297.Shock_as_pub_landlord_dies_aged_48/?ref=mr
Hamilton Saint Posted 9 July, 2009 Posted 9 July, 2009 There is a pub in Canada just off the A36 which is very nice, forget the name The Alice Lyle over Fordingbridge way is decent too Rockingham Arms?
Mattio Posted 4 August, 2009 Posted 4 August, 2009 Does the Lamb Inn have a menu for younger guests? (10 years old)
Pancake Posted 4 August, 2009 Posted 4 August, 2009 Does the Lamb Inn have a menu for younger guests? (10 years old) I believe they have one for 8, 9 and 11 year olds only. Sorry.
St Landrew Posted 4 August, 2009 Posted 4 August, 2009 Me and the Mrs ate at the Turfcutters Arms last year when we had a week in the New forest and it was head and shoulders above the other places we tried, it was cracking food and good service. I've eaten at a quite a few pubs in the New Forest over the years, many of which have been mentioned above, and all were pretty good, in their time, too. Recently, I went to the Turfcutters Arms, and it is all Ash has said of it. If you like like cracking food, good service, large portions, rustic and cosy surroundings, this is the place to go. I'll be going again soon.
bungle Posted 4 August, 2009 Posted 4 August, 2009 http://www.thethreelionsrestaurant.co.uk/ Three Lions at Stuckton - Hampshire restaurant of the year.
OldNick Posted 4 August, 2009 Posted 4 August, 2009 I notice a few suggestions for the 'Fox & Hounds' Lyndhurst Did anyone frequent this place in the 90's? No but did in the 80's, as well as the Highwayman bar at the Lyndhurst park hotel

Gingeletiss Posted 4 August, 2009 Posted 4 August, 2009 Went to the Lamb Saturday, thanks to the recommendations on here. Food was good, fairly priced, they had a live band.........whilst good, not sure it was a good thing for diners, couldn't converse at all. I would go again. Sorry, didn't notice if they had a kids menu......but it is an extensive menu.
Give it to Ron Posted 4 August, 2009 Posted 4 August, 2009 Yes they do have a kids menu.....but not massive portions if they are hungry.
Smirking_Saint Posted 4 August, 2009 Posted 4 August, 2009 Anyone eaten at the brigadier gerard lately ?? I know it's not forest new but the food is absolutely fantastic and well priced. That is all.
