hamster Posted 29 June, 2009 Share Posted 29 June, 2009 You'll notice I'm not trying to make excuses for their **** covers records, just their first couple of albums. Wasn't having a pop st. Agrreing with you, but I can't quite make out why they sold out? One of my fave album titles, that actually (mis)spelt what the music industry tries to do when a band hits the charts was Wet, Wet, Wet's 'Popped In Souled Out'
chrisobee Posted 29 June, 2009 Share Posted 29 June, 2009 I could use this space to make a case for early Aswad too, but I'd probably get laughed off the thread No, some of their stuff was quite good !
the stain Posted 29 June, 2009 Share Posted 29 June, 2009 Wasn't having a pop st. Agrreing with you, but I can't quite make out why they sold out? One of my fave album titles, that actually (mis)spelt what the music industry tries to do when a band hits the charts was Wet, Wet, Wet's 'Popped In Souled Out' I suppose when the subject matter of all your early material (and the name of your band) all relates to being skint and out of work, selling out might be a fairly easy decision to make Plus a mate of mine who recently roadied for them says they allegedly have some expensive recreational tastes. Tastes which might persuade a young man to think that he was easily the equal of his heroes and that covering their work might in fact be doing them some sort of honour. Allegedly. The Majestic Channon Posted 29 June, 2009 Share Posted 29 June, 2009 Really? My memory really isn't what it used to be! Anyway, the point I made is still valid... Their early stuff that they wrote themselves was actually alright (King was a decent song as well), but they lost any credibility when they started doing nothing but covers. Signing off and present arms are along with labour of love 1 their best albums imo, lambs bread don't let it pass you by don't slow down present arm ( song) johnny too bad king dream a lie Earth dies screaming All corkers, and live they are probably the best i've seen. Yes they have done loads of covers..but well! Wouldn't see them live now ali campbell has left and been replaced bu maxi priest though..no ali..no ub40. chrisobee Posted 9 July, 2009 Share Posted 9 July, 2009 Just seen an ad on TV. A free CD of the Specials live at Brixton plus an interview in the Times on Sunday. Worth buying for that alone.
