dubai_phil Posted 6 July, 2009 Share Posted 6 July, 2009 So wealthy (ish) new owners, so far nothing to indicate experience so have to start by assuming No great track record of running a football club No "hands on" experience of the history of our club No knowledge of the "hangers on" that spent the last however many years getting freebies in the Director's box (insert names to fit own anti-luvvie position here) Great news IMHO - a clean break and a fresh start. The next big set of questions will be who will he/she/it bring in to actually manage the running of the club? Will we have a set of Execs? Will we have a hands on owner? Chairman? CEO/MD? FD? DoF? What will the scouting network be looking for? Plenty more to come, weeks worth of speculation.. How many experienced Execs available that are any good? Lee Hoos won't come back I'm sure. Could we make 200 pages?!
SaintDonkey Posted 6 July, 2009 Share Posted 6 July, 2009 (edited) Are you sure. It seems Christian Gross, would be a better bet. A much underrated manager IMHO. Labeled as a failure at Tottenham but since then has rebuilt Basle from a team in the duldrums to the top team in Switzerland with 4 league wins and 4 cups. He was sacked in May this year after a disappointing season so he is currently looking for employment... He has done well considering his experience at Spurs and I would prefer him to Wotte who has done little in management except move from one failing club to another. That's not to say he's my preferred choice!

I'm not normally one to say this but as we're now in league one I think it has become very important... We need someone who has experience of the ENGLISH lower leagues, someone with a proven record at this level. Fancy football will not cut it in this league as much as I enjoy watching teams who play that way. We need a team of bruisers and meatheads if we're to stand a chance. I agree with the first part, but not entirely the second. Wotte is not the man to be manager, we need somebody who knows this division inside out and also knows the players to buy to be most effective. Whereas the team needs to include some bruisers and meatheads, it also must be balanced with some players with a bit of flair too.

Come on Chops, don't let the facts get in the way of our bigoted views - otherwise how on earth would the Mail survive as a paper? I didn't say the manager had to be English, just someone proven at this level. Can we really afford to take a gamble? FWIW I think Wotte would actually be quite good when he's allowed to bring his own players in and make his own selections. He seems to be trialling the right kinds of players for now. Sorry matey, the must be English line has been trotted out so often I tend to snap. Your point I would argue creates an issue as the poster pointed out above - if someone's any good at this level they'll move upwards, either withtheir team or to another. Same as players really. If a manager has moved up why would he want to drop a level, unless he's become available (sacked) suggesting failure. CB Fry Posted 6 July, 2009 Share Posted 6 July, 2009 Experience of lower leagues - like Martinez, Di Matteo etc? Where did they get their experience from? They did a good job without experience. Err - Martinez played in the lower leagues for many seasons. Di Matteo proves that inexperienced managers can deliver, but we all know that. Doesn't make Wotte a good manager. He isn't and needs to go immediately.

Fergie Posted 6 July, 2009 Share Posted 6 July, 2009 c'mon the Swiss bid...this sounds so exciting... ...but begs to ask the question, why southampton?? So much debt and other than the nice stadium, good facilites and great fans, the team is in much need of investment!! Why not look to a club like Reading, Newcastle, Middlesborough, etc...just cannot see why they would want to buy a club who are a league below, more debt (possibly) and starting next season on -10 points! having said that i know this club has great potential and with rich owners the sky is the limit. Fans would flock back to watch the lads play and the club would make money. if i had the money to buy them i would have done a long time ago...i know how the club needs to be run and since we got relageted and maybe a long time before this the club has not been run properly in order to survive and become better and better. C'mon swiss bid, if you really wanna buy saints then do it, yo have the money so do it already...then get Gordon Strachan back as manager...everyone is happy!!! eelpie Posted 6 July, 2009 Share Posted 6 July, 2009 My guesstimate of what is happening is that the Swiss group have set their price, which was lower than Pinnacle's and following Pinnacle's withdrawal Fry talked to them. My worry is that possible asset-strippers Gillco have upped the price they are prepared to pay, which the Swiss are not meeting. I hope I am wrong.
