SaintRobbie Posted 5 July, 2009 Share Posted 5 July, 2009 strange definition of winner - to take into relegation zone and back out? Well he achieved his aim, to keep Saints in the CCC. VectisSaint Posted 5 July, 2009 Share Posted 5 July, 2009 strange definition of winner - to take into relegation zone and back out? Well its a significant improvement on take into relegation zone and stay there (Redknapp and Lawrie Mac) , or even take over in relegation zone and stay there (Wotte). If Wotte is able to gain us promotion next season with similar points to Pearson with Leicester (even taking 10 point deduction into account) then we might all agree that he is as good as Pearson. Somehow though I doubt that Wotte will even be with us at Christmas, or even the end of August, at least not as manager.
Clifford Nelson Posted 5 July, 2009 Share Posted 5 July, 2009 You're the one making the claim, so you should be the one backing it up with figures. Are you able to do so? I am not making some kind of outrageous claim, just pointing out something that every fan can check for themselves rather than fantasise about. It is very simple arithmetic. They can also check out what Wotte has done as a coach and manager and determine whether that is good enough or not.

Nexstar Posted 5 July, 2009 Share Posted 5 July, 2009 Would that be the plan that involved a 1-1 uninspirational first half draw with Eastleigh? No, that would be the plan that has seen him bring in two hopeful trialists, focus on the football, give many youngsters a run-out and keep several out of contract players hanging around the club, all within 5 days of being manager. I don't class Eastleigh as a warm-up match as i fully expect atleast half that squad to not be first team regulars or to leave by August 8th. I agree that if we had kept NP, given him preseason and allowed him the luxury of using the full squad I don't think we would have gone down. However, I also suspect that in those same circumstances with Wotte we would not have gone down. Its been done to death but neither Wotte or Pearson have looked great for Southampton, but both have had limited time and not taken over in a great position. I would have kept Pearson. But now - wouldn't be particularly fussed between them.

He said Jan was respected in Holland as a very good player and a decent guy, but that Wotte was considered a "show off" (in his words), who has never achieved much.At the time of leaving for Spain it looked like Wotte was off to Egypt, when I told this Dutch guy that he was off, his exact words were "you've a lucky escape". um pahars Posted 5 July, 2009 Share Posted 5 July, 2009 If you sit down and divide the points gained with the amount of games played for Pearson and Wotte (and then remember that Wotte had a team full of kids) you will be surprised to find that Wotte's record is the better one. It might be surprising, him being foreign and all that, but it's true. I did do the Maths, you're wrong. Check it through yourself, then you might believe it. I did, and I still don't believe it. I am not making some kind of outrageous claim, just pointing out something that every fan can check for themselves rather than fantasise about. It is very simple arithmetic. They can also check out what Wotte has done as a coach and manager and determine whether that is good enough or not. It is simple arithmetic and you're still not right. Wotte's Points per game : 1.06 points per game Pearson's Points Per Game : 1.23 points per game (or 1.14 if you include the Plymouth game) HTH

Relegated by Christmas? Pearson's 13 game record of 1.23 PPG would have seen us something like 14th or 15th (even if you allow for the Plymouth game he would have kept us up with his PPG ratio). Both Poortvliet's and Wotte's ratios would have seen us relegated on their own, and the pair did a splendid job when combined;) What was that young lads name who you were ridiculing, as his Wotte Notte Gotte Clue claim doesn't sound that bad now does it? BTW don't think anyone is saying/has said in all seriousness that we would not have done a lot better with NP staying for his 2nd season - and stayed up. But it didn't happen.
