brightspark Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 As if there was any ever hope that everybody would just.... forget
SoccerMom Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Just noticed that its 4 down 4 up is that new? No, that's the way it's been for quite some time! Scary, isn't it?
voteforpedro Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Just noticed that its 4 down 4 up is that new? Its four down, three up. Thats not new.
bridge too far Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Its four down, three up. Thats not new. Now I'm confused  Or do you mean the bottom four (of League 1) go down and the top three (of League 1) go up, with the top four of League 2 going up to League 1?
brightspark Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 In League 1, 4 go down. In League 2, 4 go up. Simple.
VectisSaint Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Looks like they've finally gave us our deduction http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_2/default.stm Its been like that since yesterday at least, I commented on another thread yesterday afternoon.
krissyboy31 Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 The Football League updated the tables yesterday, once the fixtures for the new season were published.
VectisSaint Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Just noticed that its 4 down 4 up is that new? It was new in 1989. One other thing that you may have missed as well, its 3 points for a win nowadays (as a Saints supporter that may be of less relevance than any other team)
1976_Child Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 looking at that league table makes me think of being caned as a youngster. All the other kids in the class are sitting at their desks taking great pleasure in seeing me dragged to the front of the class and thrashed. (ahhh, those were the days!)
The9 Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 It was new in 1989. One other thing that you may have missed as well, its 3 points for a win nowadays (as a Saints supporter that may be of less relevance than any other team) It wasn't new in 1989, it was also the case before the play-offs were invented as well. Four teams have gone up from Division 4 (Division Three/League Two) since at least the mid 1970s, Newport County went up in 1979/80 alongside Huddersfield, Walsall and (LOL) Portsmouth. Seeing as Div 4 came along in 1958 to replace Div 3 South/North, I wouldn't be surprised if it had always been the case for Div 4 promotion and Div 3 relegation - except possibly when teams went bankrupt. I am about to check.

I am about to check. I seem to remember a period when there was a play-off between the two divisions to determine whether the team third from bottom should stay or be relegated. Weren't we relegated under McMenemy because that was the season that the number of teams relegated/promoted was increased?
The9 Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Checked. Shrewsbury came 4th in Div 4 in 1958/9 and then played in Div 3 in 1959/60 (and got promoted again, actually), so it has ALWAYS been 4 down from the 3rd tier to the 4rd since the non-regional Div 4 came into being. Well spotted Magnet.

Weren't we relegated under McMenemy because that was the season that the number of teams relegated/promoted was increased? Indeed we were. 73/74 was the 1st season of 3 up 3 down between Divs 1 & 2. The 9 is right. There has been 4 relegated from D1v 3 ever since it was formed in 1958.

Weren't we relegated under McMenemy because that was the season that the number of teams relegated/promoted was increased? The only two seasons in which relegated teams were involved in the playoffs were 1987 and 1988, and even then only Charlton in the top tier managed to stay up, so 4 teams were still relegated from the third tier in both of those seasons. It was Bolton (lost to Aldershot who eventually went up) and Rotherham (lost to Swansea who also won the Final) who went down in the Div 3 playoffs.

The9 Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 So anyway, yes, League One is the easiest Division to get out of. Three upwards, four downwards, 7/24 changing places.

krissyboy31 Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 (its the four downwards that's worrying me!) Not with Le God and Special K in charge, surely?
1976_Child Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Not with Le God and Special K in charge, surely? ..and 25K+ in SMS for every game. Attendance will surely boom if MLT+KK get involved!

Whitey Grandad Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Are they playing ? Which one's going to be number 77 ? They can't be worse than what we had this year, surely?

I think I'll give you that it may have been since 1959 :-), but actually automatic 4 up/4 down between Div 3 and 4 (or level 3/4) was reintroduced in 1989 following 2 seasons (?) when the 21st placed team was not automatically relegated but took place in play-offs with the 4th, 5th and 6th teams from the 4th level). In any case, it was a bloody long time ago
