saints_is_the_south Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Hey, Saints is the south...no wind -up 100% truth! I've been a Saints fan for 45 years and even tho we're in Div 1 I've not been so excited since we won the Cup! Cheers, didn't mean to question you, just so many rumours flying round its difficult who to believe. Do you know anymore on the 12.30 press conference that saint_stevo is on about?
miserableoldgit Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 I'll give him vision, I'm not sure I'll go with insight. Assuming all of this is true, they obviously have a plan. I just hope it doesn't involve having Kevin Keegan as the team's manager, that's all. Let me think. Whose opinion would I take notice of most concerning any new manager? MLT or you? Whose liable to be the most knowledgable when it comes to footballing matters? It really is a puzzle isn`t it?
darren Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 I haven't been so excited since I found out what my winky was for. just wet myself thanks
Papa Shango Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Keegan has done well wherever he has been bar England. Yes he did have money to spend at those clubs, but that doesn't always guarantee success. His record is far better than anyone else that we have been linked with. Any club in this division would kill to have Keegan as manager.
The9 Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 But surely Keegan, who has got out of this division before, is better in League One than someone who may have been managing in it for a lot longer... but has never had the managerial skills to actually get out of it? He may have lots more 'experience', but this is because this manager hasn't been good enough!!! Keegan, on the other hand, has, and although my hope isn't exceedingly high, surely we can guarantee that he won't turn from maestro to plonker over a few lost brain cells (with age)? I won't get started on the idea he was ever a managerial maestro, but just to cover his Fulham stint in full... I am very wary, and would rather someone who is more inclined to stick around and hasn't been a failure in their last 3 jobs.
Whitey Grandad Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 I can't see him as team manager, somehow. I would imagine that it would be as 'Director of Football' with somebody else as 'Head Coach'. Keegan's name would certainly give the club an initial boost but it won't be long before the results on the pitch start to become more important. So who do we want for 'Head Coach'?
thorpie the sinner Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 On skybet, Keegan is 11-8 to be manager at start of season! That would suggest Sky think he will be behind scenes and not manager! If he was, he would be 1-100 or they wouldn't be taking bets, mmm! Doggface's remarks might be true about Dowie...
Saint_clark Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 I can't see him as team manager, somehow. I would imagine that it would be as 'Director of Football' with somebody else as 'Head Coach'. Keegan's name would certainly give the club an initial boost but it won't be long before the results on the pitch start to become more important. So who do we want for 'Head Coach'? Paul Ince.
The9 Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 One of your reasons was that Keegan was a quitter then you said you would select someone who was sacked by England, Tottenham and Wolves and quit Southampton...you can see why I find a problem with your logic cant you. PS I still think this story is a smokescreen. Actually I provided a list of the varied and many reasons people might not want Keegan back in order to illustrate that those reasons (and people) existed in response to someone claiming there weren't any reasons provided, at no point did I say any of them were my personal reasons. FWIW, I do think Hoddle would make a better manager, but it's a Hobson's Choice that we don't have to worry about. You may be right about the smokescreen, I certainly hope so.
chrisobee Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 On skybet, Keegan is 11-8 to be manager at start of season! That would suggest Sky think he will be behind scenes and not manager! If he was, he would be 1-100 or they wouldn't be taking bets, mmm! .. Yes, you just beat me to it!
buctootim Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 On skybet, Keegan is 11-8 to be manager at start of season! That would suggest Sky think he will be behind scenes and not manager! If he was, he would be 1-100 or they wouldn't be taking bets, mmm! Doggface's remarks might be true about Dowie... Que? Surely if hes 11-8 Sky think the chances are damn high he'll be manager and not 'behind the scenes', or am I particularly stupid today? 11-8 Keegan means only 8-11 on anybody else in the world taking the job.
Whitey Grandad Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Paul Ince. I'd settle for that. (Not that I have any influence in the matter).
niceandfriendly Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Crazy to see that some people think Keegan isn't good enough for us(vast, vast minority thankfully). What world are these people living in? Just take a look at his record Games - Won - Lost - Drawn Newcastle 21 6 9 6 Man City 176 77 60 39 Fulham 61 38 11 12 Newcastle 251 138 62 51 The figures in bold are games won, followed by Losses then draws. So apart from his most recent stay at Newcastle which was doomed from the start with Wise and Ashley involved, his win percentages have been brilliant. Wake up you doom merchants, if we can somehow manage to persuade Keegan, we'll be punching well above our weight.
slickmick Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 On skybet, Keegan is 11-8 to be manager at start of season! That would suggest Sky think he will be behind scenes and not manager! If he was, he would be 1-100 or they wouldn't be taking bets, mmm! Doggface's remarks might be true about Dowie... Shearer or Dowie as manager. Could Keegan be involved in some way with the financing of the club ? We were told a household name was involved.
The9 Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Think you're missing the point. Keegan brings glamour and interest, and theres precious little of that in Lg1. If he attracts fans and good players because of who he is - thats all good. Your point was that being on Sky Sports News ahead of Arsenal etc. for whatever reason was better than not being. I would rather we were on there for tangible footballing achievement rather than hypothetical managerial appointment.
The9 Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Ban Ewell and The9. Dont want any doom and gloomers on this bright day I'm anti-idiots myself. Also, it's cloudy in Eastleigh. :smt046
thorpie the sinner Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Que? Surely if hes 11-8 Sky think the chances are damn high he'll be manager and not 'behind the scenes', or am I particularly stupid today? 11-8 Keegan means only 8-11 on anybody else in the world taking the job. 11-8 is a massive price for something that is nailed on! £1000 at 11-8 would give you a net profit of £1375. Bookies would go under
chrisobee Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Que? Surely if hes 11-8 Sky think the chances are damn high he'll be manager and not 'behind the scenes', or am I particularly stupid today? 11-8 Keegan means only 8-11 on anybody else in the world taking the job. Well just that he's 4/7 with Skybet NOT to be manager and if anyone is likely to be in the know it's Sky/Skybet.
Pancake Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Ex-saints reunion? Chairman - MLT Ambassador- Benali DoF - Keegan Manager - Shearer Coach - Dowie Coach - Dodd
Crab Lungs Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Paul Ince. Someone who can barely string a sentence together? No thank you.
buctootim Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Your point was that being on Sky Sports News ahead of Arsenal etc. for whatever reason was better than not being. I would rather we were on there for tangible footballing achievement rather than hypothetical managerial appointment. No my point was that he attracts interest and excitement, exemplified by being lead story on Sky. If he is appointed then the footballing achievement results remain to be seen. He wont be up against a mass of management titans in Lg1.
SaintBobby Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Well just that he's 4/7 with Skybet NOT to be manager and if anyone is likely to be in the know it's Sky/Skybet. Basically, SKY bet think he's about 40% to be the next manager. It's not particularly about being "in the know", those odds will shift enormnously if someone put some money down (and I think you'll find the maximum bet they will take is probably quite samll)
yarb101 Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Can I be the first to say: "interesting first post after 3 years being registered..." I have always been a man of few words!! Enjoy reading the forums but somebody normally has already covered what occurs to me during reading.. Now, if Keegan is proven to be involved, will there be any connections in this setup with Mick Channon and Lawrie McMenemy? My God, my brain is really starting to hurt
Shroppie Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 I can't see him as team manager, somehow. I would imagine that it would be as 'Director of Football' with somebody else as 'Head Coach'. Keegan's name would certainly give the club an initial boost but it won't be long before the results on the pitch start to become more important. So who do we want for 'Head Coach'? For me, still Tisdale.
AussieDog Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 I think I might just take a few sleeping pills and sleep for the next 24 hours....the suspense is killing me and I REALLY need a good nights sleep. I just hope this isn't just a dream and we really are being bought by someone who has enough cash to take us forward, and we really will get KK in, and I can look forward to the new season for the 1st time since I left England in 2003 and we were still in the Premier League! Pinch me someone....no wait....don't...if this is a dream I don't think I want to wake up just yet...
Papa Shango Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 So it COULD work, but since then, when he was still a Geordie Messiah, albeit a tainted one, he's been through England, Man City and Newcastle again, with little success. City he did do well for a few seasons, got them promoted and then had them mid table. Although his last season wasn't so brilliant I always loved watching that City side (Spurs cup tie anyone?). After a shaky start he did well at Newcastle second time around. They went on a good run at the end of the season. This season he was there for three games, they won one, drew one (away at Man United) and lost one (away at Arsenal). He didn't have money to spend this time at Newcastle (A couple of Dennis Wise signings from Spain). Not saying he is Guus Hiddink, but we are League One ffs with a 10 point deduction, we are not going to attract much better. Keegan is a far better option than the likes of Tisdale, Dowie etc who have been linked with us.
Frank's cousin Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Whateber the pros and cons, some of you need to get a bit more realistic about the whole 'better candidates thing' - we are now a D1 club which will be paying D1 wages - we are not even ion teh frame by a mile for some of the names mentioned who could easily get CCC jobs or in some cases a prem job... IF the Kevin rumours are true we should be biting his hand off - the name and experience overall will give us a) media attentiona, b) attract players who mifght otherewise waiver, c) generate interest in our revival - sure tactically there are hundeds of others but for charisma and passion adn the association with the club would this be anything other than an exciting coup? Sure we might not always defend as well as we would like but it would eb a real rollarcoaster of a season that would spark alot of renewed interest - come on get with teh KK bandwagon! ;-)

Bookies would go under Of course it not nailed on. If Pinnacle do actually take over, and they have approached Keegan, and he is interested, and they can agree personal terms and they can agree managment structure and budget then he will appointed. Lots of hurdles to clear first. Still makes Keegan in clear pole position for manager rather than behind the scenes, well ahead of any other person you can thnik of.
Frank's cousin Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Ex-saints reunion? Chairman - MLT Ambassador- Benali DoF - Keegan Manager - Shearer Coach - Dowie Coach - Dodd You see as appealing as that may be on the surface to many - the ex playesr etc and 'saints connections' - In reality is likely to be total boll ox - you cant create a set up out of passiona dn nostalgia alone - you need NEW and innovative staff that can lead us in a NEW direction and not be bogged down by the past and worried about their hero statyus being ruined by bad results - its way too cliquey and incestuous to have a realistic chance of success.
trousers Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 I still think this story is a smokescreen. Why would they go to the trouble of getting Roy Walker in to help fabricate pictures of Keegan meeting with Le Tissier and Crouch?
saints_is_the_south Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Can anybody shed any light into the rumoured 12.30pm press conference that saint_stevo posted? Or was he telling porkies?
The9 Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 What ...can you tell me what Hoddle has won in management compared to this for Keegan ? Managerial career Newcastle United Winner * Division One: 1992–93 Runner Up * FA Charity Shield: 1996–97 Fulham Winner * Second Division: 1998–99 Manchester City Winner * Division One: 2001–02 I don't rate either of them particularly highly, so I have no interest in defending Hoddle - but anyone with a huge budget in a lower division could do that (there are 3 titles, each bought with more cash than anyone else) - and they were runners up in a Charity Shield they didn't even win the League or Cup to qualify for. Now show me him doing that without a massive transfer budget and I'll be impressed. Either that, or money money money is our plan, in which case buy the players and stick the Ted Bates statue in charge.
SaintRobbie Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Nick Illingsworth is currently being interviewed on Pinnacle's talks with Keegan, and they are talking in depth about the club's situation, and the supposed fact that Keegan may well be on his way here, if backed with money. Illingsworth: "Without money, I can't see Keegan doing it, he needs to be able to buy Premiership, or Championship standard players" "This could be the greatest day in the last 5 years, or just another false dawn" This interview is going on for a fair time, and the yellow bar is going across at the bottom of the screen. I know there is a Keegan rumour thread but I thought I'd do this one as it is now breaking news on SSN. If Nick said this he needs a bloody good slap in the face. I caveat this by saying that I havent heard him or the tone in which the conversation went. I may therefore be wrong. But if not, sort your act out Illingworth. Get behind those who are trying to make a difference! IDIOT!
miserableoldgit Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Your point was that being on Sky Sports News ahead of Arsenal etc. for whatever reason was better than not being. I would rather we were on there for tangible footballing achievement rather than hypothetical managerial appointment. You really are starting to sound like 19C!
thorpie the sinner Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Of course it not nailed on. I didn't mean Keegan was nailed on in that sense. I meant that 11-8 in a two horse race is an outsider. By that I mean will he or won't he be the manager. If they thought he would 4-7 would be more realistic, they have their doubts. Personally, I would settle for KK in any capacity for the feel good factor.
The9 Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 No my point was that he attracts interest and excitement, exemplified by being lead story on Sky. If he is appointed then the footballing achievement results remain to be seen. He wont be up against a mass of management titans in Lg1. In which case you conveyed that point poorly. Now, you mean he won't be up against people that get on Sky Sports News as often, rather than people who might be better at the job, right ?
trousers Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 No one seems to have latched onto the fact that the pictures on the front page of the Echo do not show 'Keegan' in the same shot as Le Tissier or Crouch (as far as I can tell from the poor picture quality). He is on his own standing next to a Lexus 4x4 '07' reg (from what I can make out)
buctootim Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 If Nick said this he needs a bloody good slap in the face. I thought NI came across pretty well.

Now, you mean he won't be up against people that get on Sky Sports News as often, rather than people who might be better at the job, right ? Is this pedants corner? At least you're actually looking at what he's done realistically, though I just don't see why "having heard of him" makes him necessarily a better candidate. Also, there are two Dennis Wises ?
Lord Duckhunter Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 IF he becomes Manager it sends out a powerful statement that the new owners have some money. He wont come cheap and neither will the players he'll want.Whatever the merits of KK as a Manager the fact that they dont appear to be messing about, makes me positive for the future.
SaintRobbie Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 So you havent actually bothered to listen to the interview before casting judgement. Why arent I surprised. I thought NI came across pretty well. I freely admit that buc and I am prepared to withdraw it once I've heard the tone of his interview. Said that myself. But many more will just read his comments. Point is we must all be enthusiastic now and get behind MLT and the gang. KK would be fantastic for morale and attract players. We'd be on our way back up IMHO. If Illingsworth is going to talk then he needs to be POSITIVE. Those who just read comments could read his negatively. EVERYONE MUST BE POSITIVE NOW. TIME TO START REBUILDING THIS CLUB.
The9 Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Crazy to see that some people think Keegan isn't good enough for us(vast, vast minority thankfully). What world are these people living in? Not "not good enough for us", just "not good".

I hope these stories aren't based on those pictures alone because they could be from anywhere at any time.
niceandfriendly Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 Not "not good enough for us", just "not good". Well that's your opinion which is fair enough. However, thankfully you aren't in charge or choosing our new manager.
The9 Posted 18 June, 2009 Posted 18 June, 2009 "I`ve". There, that`s better! Aww, you spoiled my fun ! I note with interest you are using ` not ' for your apostrophe, is there a particular reason for this ? If so, would you like to share it with us ?
