Don't know about the Toyota, but I had a Passat 2.0TDi estate as a company car for over a year and I absolutely loved it. For a big car it handles like one a lot smaller and the fuel economy is excellent which is handy if the company don't give you a fuel card.

What are you looking for exactly? An interactive driving experience or a simple tool to get you from A - B with the least cost and fuss? Either way it's probably the Avensis, not that any diesel is particularly engaging.

A to B and enough grunt and space to lug kit around basically.

We had exactly the same choice. If I was buying I'd take the Toyota as they are more reliable and the service is better, but if someone else is paying, you might as well get the Passat. We did and have been very hapy with it.
