1960: George O'Brien about 5'-8" fouled by Harry Harris (Newport County) later played many games at Centre Half for Pompey.

Without a word George hit him with a right cross that pole axed him and left him unconscious for some time.

In 55 years it is the only time I've ever seen a footballer actually land a proper punch. The neatest thing I've ever seen.

An ageing and struggling John McGrath did it to a youthful John Richards of Wolves at the Dell in I think 1972 or 73. Everyone else was up the Wolves end for a corner and they were stood alone in the centre circle. Being but a lad, my concentration had wandered and I was watching them - a bit of verbals was followed by a swift blow to the head and Richards flat on the ground. Simple but effective defending, I always thought

Got to be Pruttons rediculous red card offence for me ? Just what was he thinking ??

I do remember the tahar Vs Dyer challenge like it was yesterday however, was in the corner next to the geordies and spent the next 10 minutes under a shower of coins, though we gave them some abuse !!

If i remember rightly Telfer then went on to score from the half way line ??

Cant remember the game but it was one of Mark Dennis 12 odd sending offs

He just flatted someone by the throat as they ran past - he was about 20 feet from the tunnel and just walked down it - didnt even wait for the card. Classic

My all-time favourite sending-off is from April 2003 when we beat Leeds. We'd won the FA Cup semi-final the week before, I think, and you could have been forgiven for thinking that our boys were going to take it easy for the last few games to make sure they made Cardiff. Not a bit of it. We won 3-2 and Peter Reid, Leeds' boss at the time, admitted that they had been hoplessly outplayed and the scoreline was ridiculously flattering. Anders Svensson scored our third, one of my favourite ever Saints goals as it started from a Leeds corner and a sweeping break from us ended with Anders thrashing the ball past Robinson having run 80 yards from his own penalty area to support James Beattie. It triggered something in Alan Smith's brain too, as he mowed into Killer and got the red card he'd been heading for the whole game, and the crowd let him know it as he flounced off. I always did hate Smith. Second favourite would be Alan Thompson, another Leeds player, when we beat them in the play-off season at home. Leeds were phenomenally dirty that day and should have had at least three sent off. We battered them for the remainder of the game and it was inevitable that we would score a late goal and win.

We were 3-0 up that game, they came backto 3-2...

Ron Davies running to the touchline at the Dell to kick Chelsea's Ron Harris full on the shin, in the days before subs, dispelling any notion that he was only good with his head.

I enjoyed every minute of obvious pain Harris spent hobbling as a passenger on the left wing.

My all time favorite has to be Francis Lee and Norman Hunter who both got sent off after a punch up, as they were walking off it all started again; of course Franny Lee was about a foot shorter than Hunter which made it all the funnier.

Seem to remember Jason Dodd taking someone out when they were clear through on goal once - can't remember much else about it but thought it was a tactical masterstroke

sounds like West Ham at home in the Souness season, when we played the whole second half with ten men...didn't seem like a tactical masterstroke until the final whistle

My favourite, which may have already been mentioned, is Franny kicking Paulo Futre off of the pitch at Upton Park.

Strangest, apart from Claus, would be Barry Horne against Norwich in the FA Cup in 92, where he jumped over a defender and landed on him by accident and got red carded...I might be remembering the incident incorrectly though

Well, sort of, he certainly lobbed Given (or was it Harper) from a good 35 yards.

My all time favourite, too. I seem to remember that Fashanu was being ultra-aggressive that day, alternately leading with his elbow and diving on the ground at the nearest touch back. Then he absolutely flattened one of our younger players (can't remember who) quite deliberately, so the next time Fashanu had the ball, down near the corner flag, Franny just went after time. After a good thirty yard run up he launched himself at Fashanu, taking him out with a flying scissorkick tackle, around waist height, sending the big ugly oaf flying up into the air. Before he'd barely landed, Franny had already picked himself up and began walking off towards the tunnel, with the ref waddling after him. Moments like that are what make legends.

Fashanu was an animal and a sneaky one at that, what he did to Mabbutt was disgusting. Anybody who nailed Fashanu during that period deserves praise but Franny did it in some style.

Best sendings off I've ever seen/enjoyed;

- Widdrington at Port Vale, a waist high brute

- Franny on Barmby at Spurs in that infamous 4-2 defeat - another one that cut Barmby in half almost

- Franny's elbow on Ruel Fox, was standing near front of Milton and heard the sound of elbow on jaw

- Kamara the skate's 2 handballs

- Russell Osman and Gary Bannister (V QPR) Osman chased him and kicked him up the backside

- Alan Smith - you could see it coming as Smith's frustrations boiled over as Saints were 3-0 up and it should have been 10. Anders' goal was one of the best ever seen at SMS

- My all-time favourite was a neutral game. Went to Tranmere V Norwich to keep a mate company on his birthday (Norwich) and Mike Milligan, already on a yellow for a nasty foul, decided that he'd had enough of the game and caught a Tranmere player right in front of their fan full pelt and head-high in front of the Tranmere fans. Everyone in the Norwich section gasped and I've never seen a set of fans so incensed at one tackle as Tranmere were, the stewards and cops had to work overtime to stop a huge brawl! It was an appalling assualt and probably a bad rap if you'd done it on the street, the Norwich fans reckon he'd done it to drive back to Norwich early and start drinking.

Just remembered another great St Mary's red card - Chrissy Marsden Football Genius getting sent off for viciously slide tackling a patch of the grass about 2 feet short of Patrick Vieira in front of the Itchen Stand in the midst of the "proportionate force" and "recklessness" debate.

Bloody ridiculous decision, can't even remember if Vieira dived, but the fact there was daylight between them didn't seem to bother the ref...

SMS was never a good ground for Smith, I'm fairly sure he got another red card for Leeds there and missed some sitters. He then went one better and got sent off for England there as well. Striker that never scores, rich man's Paul Dickov.

Also, did Benali actually get sent off for leaping shoulder-high and basically booting Barmby in the head in front of the West Stand at the Dell live on Sky ? He seemed to be on the wrong wing at the time, and I think it might have been the ridiculous turnaround game where they scored about 15 goals in 3 minutes or whatever it was, but they all blend into one after a while...

Thought it was a long way out, couldn't figure the exact yardage as i was still ducking flying coins lol.

I am surprised the geordies could afford a barrage of cash TBH.

You know how you always end up with loads of change after being out on the lash ? They didn't want to pay the excess baggage fees for the flight back.

Funny though, cos it was late in the game and the Tahar El Kelloggs tackle was probably only 10-15 minutes before the end of the season. Good old Silver Boots.

Can't remember any of the player names but it was the first time Cameroon played in the world cup. They were up against Argentina and decided on an aggressive approach. some Argentine Winger was flying down the touch line and three cameroon players took it in turns to make horrific flying tackles on him, he dodged the first two but the last guy absolutely polaxed him and took an instant red.

The great thing about that tackle was the final Cameroon player's boot flying off when he hit poor Canniga, like a bit of shrapnel flying into the air! Then a sneaky argie stepped on the Cameroon player's foot while he was waiting for his red card... marvellous scenes! :D

Did I see you an hour ago in town with a Saints shirt on' date=' if not I saw someone else with a Saints shirt in Watford. Was weird.[/quote']

Nope it was not me ! I must admit other than one guy who lives in St Albans I can't recall knowing anyone else around here supporting Saints. Probably travelled from Southampton just to visit our wonderful shopping centre ;)

I saw someone in my local shop around 5 years ago, who I had a quick word with. I saw another fella with a yellow shirt around 2 and a half years ago, then another guy walking into the refurbished Barclays this morning. Oh, and a woman down St Albans road in a red home shirt around 3 years ago. Along with ridiculous amounts of people when Watford are playing Southampton at Vicarage Road.

We got a late winner and Hull got a late equaliser, which made CCC survival suddenly a lot more difficult. When the Hull score was announced after FT all the Saints fans cheered and the Leeds fans went nuts, chucking bottles into the Itchen.

One of my all time favourites is actually the thread title

1976 .. Fulham Allstars (BEST, Moore, Marsh. etc ) come to a struggling Southampton in the come down period after winning the FA CUP, well actually just our normal p!ss poor start to the season (P7 W0 D3 L4) and a week after getting dicked at Charlton 6-2, and with The (we love all London Teams) Big Match TV cameras there ready to record the match for viewing the next day, we totally p"ssed all over them and Georgie porgy puddin 'n ' pie spat the dummy big time and got sent off. (remember in those days GBH was the absolute minimal crime for a Red Card ;))

The arrival of Super (TED) Macdougall helped inspire us to negate the 6-2 defeat 2 weeks earlier with one of our own 6 - 2 at Wolves (who went up as champs with what would have been the best defensive record in the league if we had' stuck 6 past 'em ;))

In the space of less than 2 weeks we had been involved in 3 games producing 17 goals but Best's sending off still brings miles to my face :p

That Charlton game was a Friday night affair and my 21st birthday. Absolutely slashed with rain all night and I didn't get a drink until the Saturday! Not a way to celebrate a milestone!

I vaguely remember John McGrath conceding a penalty and being sent off in the 70's away against Coventry.......it was a classic McGrath "scything" lunge, albeit slightly mistimed, but a classic nonetheless

Lol, that was typical of big John. I stll chuckle at the time he was amazingly selected to play for England B. Fair to say he did not cover himself in glory by managing the rare feat of scoring 2 own goals smileyvault-laugh.gif

Took my kid sister to her 1st saints game against blackburn when Killer totally smashed Andy ( sorry Andrew ) Cole even a 10 year old girl knew that it should have been 2 red cards but Killer hid behind Claus & ref sent Cole off

Tahar should have hit Dire harder to make up for MLT swansong being cancelled as I know that Shearer would have allowed MLT a last min pen

Ruddocks against Notts County, I think it might have been Shearer that was getting picked on by the Notts County CB, Ruddock ran the length of the pitch to floor the player ( I am sure the name was Burley (?) .

He trotted off to a standing ovation, even taking time to throw his shirt into the Milton on the way to the tunnel!

Graig Short was his name. David Lee I think stamped on shearers foot in the box and like u say Ruddock ran the pitch length and headbutted him :) after the little fracas that took place
