Alpine, does TDD know that you've hacked his account?

Great description of Varney's miss from Craig Burley on 5live extra: "If you have never kicked a ball in your life, if that ball had fallen to you in that position I would have put money on you scoring."

some people should lighten up

totally, it's amazing that many Americans think they have a proper political spectrum - it just goes from pretty right wing round to extremely right wing laced with massive self-interest. I read earlier that total spending on this election is set to excede $1 billion. I'm sure the big donars will want payback post election.

Doesn't seem to be around. I'll fill in: Obama is a filthy socialist commie liberial elitist. I'm backing Romney to be the true heir to Margerat Thatcher/Iain Smith/General Pinochet.

There's nothing going on. What you've got is a tiny betting market responding to a few bets. Plenty on here maintain that Cortese is an egotistical control freak. And he's supposed to be interested in bringing in another egotistical control freak as manager. Just doesn't seem likely.

Well I could easily split hairs and point out that they were on the same grade not doing the same job. Having said that I do agree that the Birmingham council situation was sexist and wrong. Pay AND bonuses should be the same across grades. I guess a wider point here would be that paying street cleaners etc £30k a year was rediculous in the first place.

Totally agree with OP. Unfortunately too many people seem to enjoy being complete bedwetters.

Drones - underhand, unfair and damned un-English?

What a lame comment. -

Are they any less accurate than manned aircraft? The civilians killed/hurt in an airstrike couldn't give a crap about whether or not the missile was fired by a drone or a manned jet. -
Can't we just calm down and be positive?

Totall agree with the OP. By all means have an opinion on what we can do better but let's retain some perspective and not be fickle. -

I'm certainly no war monger but I just don't get the moralising about drones. In war people get killed and maimed - what difference does it make if a bomb is delivered by a pilot in a plane or by a drone controlled by a guy using a computer? -
Time for the BBC to lose its charter

Its pretty obvious why we have the licence system rather than subscription. If 100% of the UK was on cable/satelite then you could make an argument for only charging those who wanted to pay to get BBC television. It would be interesting to see how many would happily pay £50-100 a month to Sky if it didn't include BBC? Do you also find it bizarre that we accept a car poll-tax? -

I recognised this in my "uncle-in-law" when he visited the UK from Australia last year - the "Lady doth protest too much". -

but you said: So you don't listen but are able to form an opinion anyway? -

Yes the World Service is stil running. Was that a rhetorical question? Are you an active listener? If not how can cast a valid opinion? -

Don't pay the fee then and just use the internet and radio. If you don't like Radio 1 it is because you're too old. Since Radio 1 began there have been 30 something farts moaning about how bad it is and yet it is tremendously popular with teenagers and the early 20s - it's target audience. -

Typical hysterical rubbish. Having spent many years living and working abroad (Germany, US, Canada, and New Zealand) I can honestly say that the BBC is beyond compare. The licence fee is unbelievably good value in comparison to the cost of Sky/Virgin. -
Fair enough the attack on Kirkland was just one person but there were quite a few who had encroached onto the pitch plus missiles thrown and chants about Dave Jones. Leeds have plenty of form and a not insignificant idiot minority. Don't think its quite time to get the violins out for poor old Leeds.
