So, you'd recommend an increased minimum wage and strong unions to protect the workers rights????

Some of you may know Sunnyfields farm near Totton. They run a successful organic farm shop and grow their own crops locally. I was out there a while ago and asked them why they employed so many Polish workers. The answer was - they turn up on time every day, they work hard and they never go off "sick". They've tried the local Job Centres but the locals seem afraid of hard work. The same was shown in a recent TV programme where they were interviewing people coming out of a Job Centre and asking them if they'd like a job on the local farms. Many of them were not interested - "hard work" was a common reason.

Aren't the masons the right-wing equivalent of the unions but more secretive?

My wife is a teacher and has fairly central political views. Some of her colleagues are true-blue Tories. She's a strong supporter of state education which is not surprising as that's her employer. She's not in a union, but many of her colleagues are. You seem to connect all unions with left-wing politics. What about all those commie farmers in the NFU or the top civil servants in the First Division Association or the Association of Chief Police Officers or the Police Federation - are they all raving lefties?

A word of caution. It refers to foreign born, not immigrants. So if you were born in Spain when your mum was on holiday, you would be included. The other missing data is when did these people arrive in the UK. Some of them could have been here for 40 years. There is no split between EU and non-EU so how many are EU citizens making use of the freedom to work in any EU country (as do thousands of UK citizens)? Also, increased immigration creates jobs as more people create demand for goods and services and therefore people have to be employed to provide them.

I've worked for a company in Hardley (about 2 miles from Langley) for years and, although I'm a sophisticated Southampton city dweller, haven't noticed too many of my colleagues from Langley being rampant racists. Did hear a couple of them discussing invading Poland to get more lebensraum. Is this a clue?
  8. I have a bit of personal experience here. My granddad was, for over 50 years, Head Gardener on Mountbatten's estate at Broadlands in Romsey. In the late '50s an estate worker was cycling to work through the estate, he claimed that he saw a strange craft land in a field. He lost conciousness and when he recovered it had gone. He reported it to Lord Mountbatten who, in the company of some estate workers, went back to the scene. They found a large patch of flattened grass and also some scorching. It was winter and there was snow on the ground and a large area had been melted. My granddad was a very level-headed chap and saw no reason to disbelieve the bloke. I knew many of the witnesses personally and they were all convinced that something odd had happened. A well-known UFO author. Timothy Good, featured the incident in one of his books.
  9. Worked in the hovercraft industry for nearly 20 years after leaving school. Should have been exploited a lot more. The '73 fuel crisis didn't help as a lot of craft were gas-turbine powered and quite fuel-hungry. Later models were developed with diesel engines (Southsea - Ryde) which were more economical but no company was willing to put up the money to fund further development to build larger craft.
  10. I use MP3MYMP3 which works well.
  11. According to the Echo, wreath has been left at the fire station "From the Chairman and everyone at Southampton Football Club".
  12. Also he had just got into the England team and probably had his head turned by those from "bigger" clubs. Happened to Mark Wright as well.
  13. Does that mean that we can have first class health and education, a network of cheap high-speed railways and cheap wine? If so, bring it on.
  14. He gets his opinions from the Daily Express. Say no more...

  16. Just had a nasty problem. My internet addresses were being re-directed (both with Explorer and Chrome), couldn't update Spybot. Decided to download Malwarebytes but prevented from connecting to site. Got a copy via another PC, ran it and it found 25 infections. Everything is now OK.
  17. Been with them a few times and as the OP said, it depends on the site. Most are fine but we went to one in Normandy where my 3-year old was told off for kicking a beach ball (no games except in the games field).
  18. Made me laugh this morning, that nice Mr Cameron on BBC saying that, like all of us, he had to sit at his kitchen table and work out how he could adapt his household budget in light of future tax rises. Yeah, with a wife that's worth 30 million, how does he manage?
  19. Um, I don't think we had a Northam end at The Dell. Perhaps you mean Archers Road. I was at this game with my 8-year old lad and don't remember anything untoward.
  20. As others have said, the east is expensive but worth a look. St Tropez for the yachts (that never seem to go anywhere) and the posers. Monaco is spectacular, full of Ferraris and other pricey motors. If you head west past Marseilles, Sete is OK and is at the end of a very long sandy beach (about 15 miles) which never gets crowded. Farther inland, Montelimar is the home of nougat, loads of free samples to be had but not good for the teeth. As with most places, everything's cheaper away from the coast. It's a nice part of the world, very laid back, loads of cheap fresh food and wine.
  21. What is it about men of the cloth? I was at Barton Peveril Grammar with a lad who went on to become a vicar at Hedge End. He was banged up for taking too close an interest in his choir boys. He wasn't even Catholic, so no vow of celibacy.
  22. He doesn't live in Romsey. He lives in North Baddesley, known as "The Village Of the Pikeys" when I was growin up in Romsey.
  23. 51 is not old.
  24. Off with their goolies!!!
  25. I'm thinking of getting one. Interested to know how you get on.
