Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting he's going to be as great a player and have the longevity of a Ronaldo or Gerrard but this is about marketing and merchandising on a grand scale, not just about the player performance which is all about the now and his recent past, but about victories off the pitch (refer below). "Incidental" was probably a little extreme, to prove a point, much the same way as you have used "critical" too prove the other extreme end of the spectrum. It is somewhere between the two, but for mind closer to incidental than critical. Take Facao signing for instance. Sure it was only a loan, but it was a £15m loan. It wasn't about him being pivotal to the team (in the end he was a dud) but selling shirts and as a broader (albeit desperate) statement of intent by the club. This time, Manure have outbid Real Madrid and for now atleast, as a club get to act all billy big balls about it, whether Pogba performs or not. For the record, I think (or maybe hope), he's going to get found out in the Prem League. He's a very good footballer, but he won't have the luxury of space and time like he had in Serie A. Time will tell

I thought I read somewhere that he had a 12 months notice period, and that he had handed in his notice 6 months ago (relations actually broke down a lot quicker than being reported), and they negotiated for him to server 6 months and then after this go on gardening leave for 6. Obviously him and the board have kept it all hush hush, as only just been made public last few days.

Depending on your definition of "global superstar", arguably he already is one because he has broken the world transfer record and signed for MUFC. What happens next on the pitch with him, and whether he is capable of keeping his stardom is incidental in MUFC's grand scheme of things.

My take is that he was promised the moon on a stick..... Levy just gave him a stick.

It is not about how many games Pogba will win for them, but how many units of merchandise he will shift around the world.

Sadly, the foundation of your argument is built on sand. If the ball goes over the line, a goal is a goal is a goal, whether it's a 30 yard worldy, a tap in off the line, or a penalty - why? Because there is always an opportunity for the scorer to a - miss, b - have the ball saved c - score. So no transfer news to speak of then....?

Yep noticed the same thing. I'm wondering whether clubs are trying to tie down as many players as possible before the salaries increase in Sky money momentum and reach the stratosphere. Would be interesting to know whether they all have buy out clauses.
