The fact that people with demonstrated good judgment and expertise sometimes make mistakes does not reduce the relative value of their opinion when it is compared with someone with no positive track record in either respect.

Frankly, as underrated players go, he is overrated.

The original poster's question was reasonable in the sense that there were some people posting here (and probably other places) that it would be bad to qualify for the Europa League. What makes the whole thing unreasonable is that those people were being quite foolish. What is the point of all this if we do not want to do as well as possible each season. Should we have deliberately lost a few games at the end of last season so that Swansea would play in Europe instead of us? Is our goal to finish no higher than 8th every year? If so, that is a stupid stupid goal. I recognize that it will be difficult to qualify for the champions league. I recognize that it is virtually impossible in the rigged system that is the Premier League to win the title. But progress towards either goal requires improvement over time and (usually) from year to year. There is no way to do that without qualifying for the Europa League on a regular basis. Tottenham and Liverpool may wish they could shoot for fourth place each year without the distraction of the Europa League, but they undoubtedly recognize that it is better to finish 5th than 6th than 7th than 8th etc. Who knows, maybe if we had finished 5th and Liverpool had finished 8th they would not have been able to sign Clyne away from us. (Or more likely he would have cost them more money in transfer fees and salary.) No one has yet explained how Southampton is supposed to strive to be the best it can but still avoid the Europa League. Absent such an explanation, the original poster's reasonable post was simply a "reasonable post" based upon complete nonsense. As a side note, if we ever qualify for the Champions League, a good coefficient from the Europa League will greatly improve our status in the draw making it more likely we would qualify for the group phase from a fourth place league finish and more likely we would reach the knockout phase thereafter. This year is the first time that Manchester City's poor performances in Europe will not hurt them in the group draw. Had they done better in Europa, they might have avoided some of their group of deaths in the recent past.

Post-Match Reaction: SAINTS 3-0 Vitesse Arnhem - Europa League R3
Redslo replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
My responses: 1) Why not? Professional magicians do it all the time. 2) I heard that Vic went to Les Reed begging for a contract extension at the same wages and was refused. They must know something we don't so everything is fine. 3) We don't want Wanyama or Mane for 2016-2017. They will both miss January for the African Cup of Nations and with all our young players who will have to be on the 25 person roster that season, we simply don't have room for them anyway. 4) I hear we have hired lawyers to try to overturn Bosman and then they will not be able too leave. Don't worry. It will be publically announced early next week. 5) No you don't. -

Not enough no's there. The qualification games are the most important games of the season. They must be won to make all the effort to qualify last season not be wasted. Also, a failure to qualify would be very bad for England's coefficient. -

How would West Ham losing help us. In the long run, England needs to maintain its coefficient and a West Ham loss is very bad news for that purpose. -
If I can consistently refer to what I have always thought of as soccer as football to the point where I have occasionally confused some of my American friends, I think I can be cut some slack on roster--a word which actually creates no confusion in this context. As for the topic itself, what is going to happen next year when Turnbull, Stephens, Gape, and Ward-Prowse all have to be on the 25 person squad roster rosta list timetable schedule thingy?

I posted that on my blog a while back, but when I went to confirm it right now, I could not find the information that indicated that Barnes joined us in January 2014 which is what I thought at the time. I don't know whether I made a mistake in my research at the time or whether the internet changed, but it does appear he is not B list eligible for the entire season, not just for the group phase. He will be B list eligible next season, if we are in Europe. Keep in mind the difficulties of signing more players than are eligible to play in Europe. If we get into the group phase do we really want players who cannot play there? Will it be bad for morale? Of course, we could register Forster and Gardos for England but not for Europe on September 1. That would put off the problem until January when it would only matter if we qualified for the knock out phase. I don't see Gardos on the official list you linked to but it doesn't matter as this is only the registration list for the first two fixtures and we know he will not be playing in the next week.

CONFIRMED - Virgil Van Dijk joins on Five Year Deal

Do we really need that many different ways to poke fun at alpine? Can't we just link to his earlier posts? -
Isgrove's status as a club trained player in a year we qualified for Europe guaranteed that he would stay with the club unless, as I have said before, he was literally worse than nothing. This does not mean he will not be good enough it just means his presence was inevitable.

I just posted "Redslo’s First Anniversary."

CONFIRMED - Virgil Van Dijk joins on Five Year Deal
Redslo replied to Brizzie Saints's topic in The Saints
what does that even mean? -
The club needs to update their academy profiles on the official website.
-
I think he was identifying what he viewed as problems--one of which was a statement that no one would want to leave Southampton. I am not sure if that statement was actually made but, in any case, he was not listing the players who would not leave.

The moderators should start a new sticky thread about Alpine and he should only be allowed to post in that thread. I think that would solve all related problems.

CONFIRMED - Virgil Van Dijk joins on Five Year Deal

For 2013-2014, the last season for which public figures are available, Everton's total payroll (both players and other staff members) was 69 million while ours was 63 million. Their turnover was 121 million while ours was 106. Given recent developments in player sales and league position, there is simply no way they can afford to pay significantly more than we can especially for a young center back who would not be at the top end of either club's pay scale. http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/apr/29/premier-league-finances-club-by-club Plus, this. Also, this. -

Thank you for implying that I am Smart. -
Or Wanyama, Rodriguez, Clyne, Boruc, Fonte, Lambert, S. Davis, Cork, or Puncheon. I recognize I have left a number of others out who were not helpful in the Premier league. Of course, if all of Cortese's bad signings were ones where he had a relative acting as the fixer, then there might be something to complain about but I doubt there is any evidence of this.

CONFIRMED - Virgil Van Dijk joins on Five Year Deal
Redslo replied to Brizzie Saints's topic in The Saints
There are signatures involved in getting a player on loan. Lovren and Toby were very good for the club for a year and nine months respectively. Thus, their usefulness far outlasted that of any of your posted comments. Jos was signed for the Championship and was plenty good there. Why? There is no African Cup of Nations this year and worrying about January 2017 seems premature. Do you have some other issue with Africans? Perhaps some dark secret you are unwilling to publically acknowledge? -

I thought Celtic has made it clear that they are not selling to anyone until they have qualified or failed to qualify for the Champions League group phase. Everton may be a bigger club that we are by history but right now they do not appear to be a better destination than Southampton. They certainly do not seem to have any significant financial advantages over us and we can pay the same kind of salaries they can. I have no idea whether Van Dijk knows that he is Everton's first choice to replace Stones, but I suspect that whatever he knows about Everton's interest in him, he also knows about our interest in him (assuming we are, if we are not he undoubtedly knows that as well). -
Technically, it is called a field and the slope is not part of it.

A striker with the ability to violate the laws of physics with his shots should not be loaned out.
