  3. I enjoyed the process of researching the rules and writing my blog and knowing that a number of people went to my blog to read it. And in a larger sense, isn't everything we do on this forum also wasting moments of our life that we are never going to get back? And in a larger sense, isn't life nothing but wasting moments of our life that we are never going to get back? And in an even larger sense, isn't BAH I don't have time for this.

  8. I disagree. Fifth qualifies for Europe. I would try to prove it by citing rules, but it is 2:14 am now. If this debate continues, I may go to the rules tomorrow and try to prove this.
  9. I fully expect that Southampton will win the EL next year while finishing 8th and Leicester will win the Champions league while finishing 9th. This stuff matters. The 5th place club in the Premier League will always qualify for Europe. The chart is wrong to the extent it says or implies anything different. 1) CL 1,2,3, 6, 7 2) EL 4, 5, 8, 9 3) 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 (and all lowers league clubs as well)
  10. The host is a Southampton fan who basically has the professionalism (if that is the right word) to virtually never say anything about it. Somehow the idea that RK should go to Arsenal provoked him that day. I watch the show everyday--it is a half hour show on the ESPN new network in the United States--except on Sundays when it is an hour and Saturdays when it is not on. This is one of a handful of times in the past three years that the host's Southamptoness came out.

  12. I think line 3 and 4 are wrong here. If the team that wins one of the European competitions and finishes outside the top 4 qualifies for Europe by cup or league finish, their European spot is not transferred to another club. Also, the bottom line also applies if teams in the top six win the FA and Capital One cups.

  15. It would improve very slightly for this coming season. It might also improve it more in the future depending on how well Liverpool did in the CL. As it is, all points earned by England clubs will be divided by 7 next season (because there are seven clubs in Europe). If Liverpool qualifies, the points would be divided by 8, but Liverpool would get 4 automatic points for making the CL group phase. Basically it would help if Liverpool earned more points than the average English club in Europe next year and it would hurt if they did not. This season they did. Last season they did not.
  16. To be fair, it is more like two steps forward, one step back. Sorry. I posted before I read this. Well, so far it has turned out better. We can spend significantly more than we have under FFP. However, aside from the new TV money, that would require Liebherr to put her own money into the club. While she has done so in the past, I interpret the sustainability goal that the club talks about to mean that she does not want to continue putting in more money each year. As for the amount of money she could put in, assuming we are competing in Europe, it is about 8 million pounds a year, plus whatever we are spending on youth development and charity. And, of course, each year's profit could have been spent down to zero. So last year, if we assume 4 million pounds a year on youth development and charity, we could have spent approximately 30 million pounds more. The limit is much higher if we are not playing in Europe--about 65 million last year. That being said, I don't think it is reasonable to expect her to put in 12 million pounds a year, year after year. However, if she wants to do that I would be quite pleased.
  17. Also, given that nothing lasts forever, why assume we will still be in the Premier League when it loses popularity. On the other hand, building a new stadium on higher ground to avoid the consequences of global warming might be a good idea.

  20. For what it is worth, I thought Liebherr's body language was excellent in the few seconds she was visible on American television. Clearly, she is ready to back the club big time this summer.

  22. Yes. I do. My heart counsels prudence in expenditures so we don't face the problems of the past. Of course, if Liebherr was willing to just pay for the new (or expanded) stadium out of her pocket then sure, go for it. Note I said football business sense. Paying someone that much--assuming it is the right someone and the right club--does make football business sense. It probably does not make normal business sense, of course.

  24. Spending a lot of money to expand the stadium to fill it with cheaper seats makes no football business sense.
  25. If we pay Ronald 50 million pounds there will not be enough money to bring in new players.
