This limit arises out of the apparent unwillingness of the owners of Tottenham to fund the stadium out of their billions of personal wealth. If they were willing to do that financial fair play would not require them to reduce their spending. Also, one of the clubs ahead of us, Aston Villa, went down so we are probably 8th now. Also, the 80 million figure is for all staff salaries, not just players. Exactly. In fact, up until this past year, Southampton was filing its financials in March or April. Assuming that some of the other clubs are still doing that, this article has some fairly new information.

In 2014-2015 the total wage cost for the entire staff was 80.4 million pounds so I guess you could say that is where the TV money does.

No we are not. We are 12th out of 15. The winner of the swiss cup could make us 12th out of 16 or 13th out of sixteen depending on who wins. A majority of the clubs that have qualified for the 3rd playoff round have lower coefficients that we do. Admittedly, most of the clubs that drop in the from the Champions League to the group phase or the final playoff round will have higher coefficients so we will likely end up in the third pot where we would have been last year. should have read further before respond. This was good.

Premiership stadiums getting bigger, hope we don't get left behind
Redslo replied to 9-3's topic in The Saints
Sure they are. The clubs are just managing to do poorly despite the large stadiums, not because the large stadiums don't matter. -
No problem then. We can sure find a better golfer than Koeman.

breaking News! Ronald puts own to paper on new deal!!!
Redslo replied to Turkish's topic in The Saints
Imagine Turkish's excitement. He finds this old picture and boom he has an idea which is so exciting that he just cannot take the time to reread the title of his brand spanking new post of brilliance. I, for one, am disappointed. The wind up and the humor would have been better with a better title. Like Ron signs new deal with foreign competitor. Ron signs new deal but Les Reed doesn't attend signing ceremony. Ron signs new deal but does not answer questions about which players will be leaving this summer. or best yet Here is a photograph that I believe is in the public domain. -
well, by definition, our bad signings don't end getting much first team time but we have had bad signings that were intended to be for the first team if they worked out.
-
Never. That was the bestest thing of all. And last year, with the Fair Play entry, England might have been able to get 10 clubs into Europe.
-
And all at the same time.
-
He was except for the word "up". Also, Spurs. And technically Man City are guaranteed 8 games.
-
We have had 1 or 2 bad signings every year. What it would take to have a problem is the absence of 2 or 3 good signings. The club is trying to be financially conservative for reasons that anyone who has been a fan longer than I should understand. If we sell players for 100 million pounds and buy players for 80 million pounds we have probably net invested in the club given tax issues, likely salary increases, and the fact that we generally sell players for more than we pay for them. The premier league money (at least in the past couple of years) has gone into things like increasing the size and qualify of our staff, both on and off the field, and paying for the new facilities. With the big jump in TV money this year, it is likely that all premier league clubs will have more money to spend on the transfer market. If we are to continue to improve we will have to spend it better than most. ditto also ditto It is not clear when she got control over her father's estate, but obviously she had control at some point and when she saw things going to far in a direction of which she did not approve, she made changes. Good job KL.

Good answer.

No one has yet explained how you keep a player who won't sign a new contract. You either sell him for full value with two years left or for reduced value with one year left or let him go for nothing. Admittedly, sometimes the reduced value option is the best one--we needed Clyne for last year and Wanyama for this year. Sometimes the nothing is a good option--we should have kept Cork until last summer to cover for Wanyama and Schneiderlin. But I just don't see how the board can keep these players. They can offer raises but not to the level that Tottenham or Liverpool can afford to pay and we cannot guarantee European Football, much less Champions League football. On the other hand, perhaps no one in England will be able to guarantee that anymore--we may see a drain of the best players to clubs like PSG, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, and Bayern--so our relative disadvantage may be shrinking. We shall see. But Alpine, just as a fun experiment, try not panicking this year. You might enjoy it and have a good summet.

I don't think it is possible to know that yet. Also, had we reached the group stage last year we would have been in the third pot.
-
Of the 13 clubs who have already qualified for the group stage, our coefficient is 10th highest. When all is said an done it would have to be in the top 12 to be seeded in the first pot and the top 24 to be seeded in the second pot. I think the third pot is likely. It should attract better players but our big Premier League Money does that as well. It might help us if we are trying to sign the same player as Everton. 40 pounds per ticket per game would generate something short of 4 million pounds. We get 2.4 million euros for the group stage plus 360K Euros for each win and 180K Euros for each draw. There are additional bonuses for winning the group and participating in each knockout round. There is also the market pool money which is based upon some arcane calculation that depends on English TV money and the performances of other English clubs in Europe and where clubs finished in the standings. http://www.totalsportek.com/money/europa-league-prize-money/ http://www.ecaeurope.com/PageFiles/7970/ECA-UEFA%20Memorandum%20of%20Understanding_FINANCIALS.pdf

The respective coefficients make that draw impossible. I am confident that the full process of leaving Europe will not be completed in the next few months leaving this year's qualifications intact. But no doubt you were joking.
-
That is a simple way and it may even be right with respect to spain this year but we know it is not always right because CL qualifications can cause another club to be demoted to the Europa League. However, as you note your method would suggest that Celta Vigo would (as Wikipedia claims) qualify for the group phase of the Europa League if Barcelona wins the cup. My question is where do the rules say that? I can't find it.
-
I apologize. I had 15 minutes to kill so I researched this. I am not clear why Celta Vigo would not qualify for the group phase. Wikipedia thinks they qualify for the group phase if Barcelona win the cup. I am not clear why they would not always qualify for the group phase. I agree that Spain loses a European spot but no matter what they get five clubs into the champions League with Villarreal entering in the play offs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016%E2%80%9317_UEFA_Europa_League#cnote_Note_ESP

At least we don't have to worry about players at the Copa America.
-
Thank you. This answer will allow me to not be tempted to research the question and answer it myself.

They did get put on probation and paid a fine for flouting it. Last I heard, the ridiculous sponsorship deal was being devalue to put it at fair market value. Of course, they are trying some tricks with the non-English Clubs they own.
-
No, it doesn't work that way. Although it could be clearer, Champions League Rule 3.07 covers this situation. As the Europa League winner Liverpool would enter the Champions league in the group phase and there is no rebalancing of the access list to be done which means that all other entries into the Europa and Champions League remain the same. Strangely, the rules are clearer if both of the two title holders come from the same country and neither qualified for Europe through domestic competition. Under those circumstances the rules explicitly state that their country does not lose any European slots.

Perhaps this is what happened. Are there many newly one armed folks in Southampton these days?
