  1. This, once in the system of the professional footballers merry go round you generally get looked after, as once discarded other clubs try their luck.
  2. If we are removing Puel, this is the quality of guy we should be looking at.
  3. Good article but didn't we draw 1-1 at Citeh ?
  4. Seventeen goals at home is poor marketing for season ticket sales, but our chances created is little different from other teams. I see all home games and several away games a season, and I believe the solution is simple, and nothing really to do with Puel and the cards he has been dealt. Away from home we are set up to get a result by defending and nicking a goal, which is accepted as a good policy. The problem is at home, where we are set the same. If we concede, the chances are we would not win, as our 'creative' midfield players and 'strikers', with a couple of exceptions, are wasteful of the numerous opportunities presented. Once this issue is identified and the club ships out those responsible and brings in more competent finishers, the formation can be more adventurous. I cannot see what difference any random manager would make to the incumbent technically sound manager, who plays to the team's strengths and covers their weaknesses.
  5. I think Stephens is as good , if not better, than Fonte has been over the past few seasons. VVD and Toby covered him very well.
  6. Curbishley must be on a list somewhere. Thank goodness Saggy Chops has got a job next year otherwise someone would start a thread on him as an option.
  7. I do wonder what the board are allowing us to aspire to, and whether we have to accept the occasional poorer season. I heard on the radio leaving the ground that Stoke finished 13th this season after three seasons at 9th, yet they seemed content with Sparky. It was only four years ago we were celebrating finishing 8th under Poch having lost to Sunderland in both cups, but we had a full house for the lap of appreciation. Also interesting stats about what position 46 points would achieve made me wonder how teams have performed after reaching the safety of 40 points. Clearly this season West Brom, Stoke and Watford and a lesser extent , Saints faded badly after passing the safety of 40 points. On the other hand seven wins from the last nine games under Koeman made last season look particularly good .
  8. Three seasons ago we finished 8th and lost to Sunderland in both cups, but loved the manager (despite his poor interviews with his translator). This season we will probably finish 8th and also got to a cup final, but want the manager out. It can only be the poor crablike football played at home as the away games have not been so bad. I don't have a problem with Puel staying provided he only plays one of Tadic, Boufal, Redmond (or any other enigma) at a time, and gets a couple of more dynamic (and goal scoring) midfielders .
  9. Jack Stephen's Hansen-esque forays into the clear space in front of him, like a quarter back, is something all the players should be doing. It moves the game forward and gets the team nearer to Gabba. Unfortunately we have become a team of nervous crabs lacking an incisive cutting edge. We are back to Poch's 8th place, with the bonus of the cup final, so it isn't all bad and can be rectified over the summer.
  10. Tadic, Long and JRod have had very poor seasons which has greatly affected the team as their job is to score goals. Record signing Boufal has underachieved, and we have obviously missed VVD and Austin. However the progression in game time of Jack Stephens, Sam McQueen and JWP can only be a good thing going forward. The regulars in the team have held us together, albeit having off games now and again , which is to be expected. I do wonder if the new breed of Premier League supporter who have joined us since we got the double promotion have unrealistic expectations for a provincial club. Having been around since 1992 I agree that this season is as good as any, with the major failing not being anything that a goal scorer from both the strikers position and midfield would not cure. Ship out the high wage earning dross and bring in some hungry players and Puel will be fine going forward.
  11. Sky have latched onto the timber tabernacle dilapidation works. Time for Pompey City Council to close the dump. http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11674/10859452/portsmouth-need-4-1m-to-avoid-closure-of-fratton-park
  12. All done here, same seats since the move from the Dell. Like most on here, me and the Junior Kingsland Reds were mad enough to renew upon relegation to division 1, so it's a no-brainer these days watching our club.
  13. Had a great holiday in the north of the island last September. Nice warm climate ( its as far south as Rome on the mainland). Sandy beaches reached via tracks off the roads and some lovely towns with good restaurants . The interior is worth exploring as well . We flew into Olbia airport on the NE coast, a bit like Bournemouth airport, and stayed at Isola Rossa ( NW coast) for one week and San Pantaleo (NE) for a second week, near the Costa Smeralda yachting towns. It's Italy without the frenetic chaos of the mainland.
  14. Probably one of our most underwhelming signings ever - Neil McCann - has been appointed manager of Dundee FC. Let's hope his players have the integrity to put in a little more effort than we witnessed from him.
  15. I thought he was over thinking his passing and looks to be ball watching at times rather than anticipating. Nowhere near VVD. Dare I say Stephens is a better prospect ?
  16. Stephens is exactly the type of player we would be attempting to sign - an England U21 international, composed on the ball, and with several seasons in the lower leagues behind him. No problems with him playing, he's doing a fine job and will benefit with the experience.
  17. Why this obsession from Sky / Fonte about 'clearing his name' - No other players have such an inquest, he's gone .
  18. The 20 ish minutes between that equaliser and the winner were amongst the best as a Saints fan ever, the ground at our end was rocking !
  19. We have had the manager setting up the team creating chances all season, Long and JRod being so wasteful. Now we have a proper goal scoring striker the future looks a lot brighter, the shame being trips like Milan where we would travel with a good chance of winning, are unlikely now next season.
  20. Totally agree, from the equaliser until the winning goal were amongst the best 20 minutes of being a Saints fan in the last 41 years.
  21. We watched that, he dropped everything or it bounced off him, and that was only a warm up.
  22. It is strange supporting a brand / life comfort blanket rather than your own city team. I left once Saints came down from the presentation. You are right, Wembley Way was packed with Mancs. I also sat in Club Wembley at the Saints end as my sons used our season tickets. The Mancs around us left after our equaliser and never returned !
  23. Steady, those of us in the middle of the Kingsland eff and Jeff at the referee like everyone else, we also stand at away games !!!
  24. Just back and I seem to have lost my voice. Gave my season tickets to my sons and sat in Club Wembley behind our goal. Despite being dressed as a neutral, no one seemed bothered that we joined in every Saints song and danced in the aisle when Gabba equalised ! Proud day, it was not to be.
  25. Whatever team we had fielded against Arsenal, they would have matched it to go for the win.
