Not only a Proper Player, but a cult hero to boot. Neither a conventional striker nor midfielder Matthew Le Tissier was given license to roam about as he pleased, which suited him perfectly as he didn’t much like wasting energy on movement. Instead, he invested it in scoring stunning goals. His career is a one-man highlights reel as he proved to be just as deadly from 12-yards as 30, scoring 47 of the 48 spot kicks he took. Hero-worshipped at the Dell, it is an enduring shame that the claims of the man they called Le God on the red-and-white section of the South Coast were overlooked by a succession of England managers. It’s even said that a certain Michel Platini once went looking for French heritage. One of Guernsey’s most celebrated sons, a 44-year-old Le Tissier came out of retirement to help his hometown club, Guernsey FC, through an end of 2012/13 season fixture pile-up – and to promotion to division one south of the Ryman South. Still Proper after all these years.
