Just done a bit of digging, comparing our current position with our two greatest Premier League 'escapes'. At the same point in the calendar in 1996/97 we were in 19th place, played 23 and 20 points. We were 3 points behind safety, but with a better goal difference and 2 games in hand. we finished 1 point and 2 places above the drop zone, played 38, points 41. In 1998/99 we were also in 19th place, played 24 with 20 points, 4 points from safety and 11 worse off on goal difference. We finished 5 points clear, played 38, points 41. Why do I, and so many others, simply not have any faith in the current squad emulating these outcomes ?
