At the risk of taking this thread further off topic, there is "history" between Russia and Ukraine that goes back much further than 2014. Russia has always viewed the Ukrainiwns as subservient to them, that Ukraine only exists to feed the superior Russian people. The Holodomyr was a deliberate act of genocide, the Tatars were subjected to mass deportations from their traditional lands in Crimea. There is a reason why the Ukrainians welcomed the Germans in 1941 as liberators, ( admittedly this was misguided ).

Russia armed and supplied the insurrection in Donetsk and Luhansk, Russia annexed Crimea by military force, Russia invaded Ukraine. The United States forced Ukraine to give up it's nuclear weapons in return for guarantees of security. NATO has never forced a country to join the alliance. However, fear of Putin has.

Hypothetically, how would you have expected European powers to have reacted to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, had they held such a capability ?

General Mark Clark's US 5th Army liberated Rome on 4th June 1944. He was mightily pissed off when this event didn't make the front pages of the US press, having been overshadowed by D-Day.

It took the 8th Army and the US 5th Army 2 years to fight up the length of Italy in WW2. Excellent defensive mountainous terrain.
